Why change mid stream after primaries were excepted? Funny how when an old person has trouble getting info out is lambasted. No go on my part.

Those thinking for new opportunity should have done so way back when primaries started. We will all back him when push comes to shove to save our Democracy!

Expand full comment

We need to fight fire with fire. Biden has been a wonderful president. He doesn't currently have the firepower to go on the attack real time which is necessary when you are running against a loudmouth pathological liar. Maybe Gavin Newsome.....he is very close to Biden and thinks like him and he has energy which translates to firepower. I hate that we are in this position and no one saw this coming, but we only have so many days left to get our best and strongest coalition together and fight like a team for democracy!

It is time we stop thinking in rhetorical flourishes and verbal debate.

The power of the USG lies in the thoughtful and contemplative power of the pen. We are not in physical war.

Steve comes to the opposite conclusion than I (and so be it).

This letter is the power of the bully pulpit speaking with deliberate thought embodied in it.

Our visual TV minded folks are looking for the WWF shouting matches and rhetorical flourishes as landed punches as the "measure of the man".

I'll take the power of a thoughtful, well-crafted letter and policy achievements as proof of the use of power with teeth (i.e., signed into law, a 'for the record' reproval, etc.). These things have lasting value beyond the 24-hour news cycle. We need to get our context away from the shouting matches and back onto "Doing what is right for American Citizens" with actions not BS lies and remonstrations for point scoring over substance.

"The voters of the Democratic Party have voted. They have chosen me to be the nominee of the party.

Do we now just say this process didn't matter? That the voter's don't have a say?

I decline to do that. I feel a deep obligation to the faith and the trust the voters of the Democratic Party have placed in me to run this year. It was THEIR decision to make." (my emphasis on THEIR)

Well done President Biden. This is exactly the sharp wit I want in my President.

“The people” voted Joe into office in 2019. In (80+)geriatric years that’s an eon. Swing voters know that and’re not swayed by party loyalty or ideology. They don’t see Trump as a danger and will NOT underwrite a feeble commander in chief.

Biden -will be- defeated and it will require generations to recover, if ever.

Expand full comment

He won’t be defeated if we vote for him.

Gavin Newsome is NOT going to run. He would have to run as VP and he isn’t going to twiddle his thumbs for 8 years while running CA is a better job. And he also does not have enough name recognition to turn it around in only two months. Just stop.

Expand full comment

Exactly Susie, well said. Gavin would be considered much too liberal for a lot of the independents in the Midwest and in all of the South. How stupid can the Dems be to think that it is wise to change horses mid-stream? And why on earth would anyone trust Steve, who was a lifelong Republican. Who in their right mind would have supported Ronald Reagan, Bush Senior, and Junior. I bet not many on this platform did that.

Expand full comment

Except there is no one or they would have been in the primaries.

Expand full comment

What primaries? One candidate is not a primary.

Expand full comment

Yes, primaries. No one stopped anyone from running. They decided they could not beat Biden so didn’t try.

Expand full comment

Okay so we had no choice. We did not choose Biden because we had no choice.

Expand full comment

Steve tried to undermine Biden back then, too, and failed.

Expand full comment

By Biden announcing, he shut down any real chance of a primary. And he damn well knew it.

Expand full comment

We are way beyond that. Let’s back our Dem candidate and be don’t with MAGA

Expand full comment

Okay, ridiculous response. I will never support MAGA or that POS TFG. Please don't pretend that's what I'm saying. If Biden stays or steps aside, I will support anyone against TFG. In your original post, you stated ""why change midstream after primaries" and I'm merely stating facts. There was no actual primary and that is 100% due to Biden's decision to run again. No one in the party had the stomach to run a primary against an even obviously weak incumbent. Pretending we had an actual primary is revisionist history and simply not true.

Expand full comment

False. No one stopped anyone from running. Don’t blame Biden for that.

Expand full comment

Except there were primaries. I voted in one, didn’t you? If you didn’t then you have no right to throw out my candidate.

Expand full comment

There were no real primaries, even though they were held in every state. The DNC and entire democratic party, with the exception of Dean Philips and a few "who the hell is that?" candidates, refused to support an actual open primary. You're kidding, right?

If there was an actual primary, serious presidential hopefuls would have actually run. Kennedy eviscerated Carter in 1980, all but guaranteeing a loss to Reagan in the general. No way the party was going to do that once Biden egotistically stated he was the only one who could beat TFG and decided to run again. He killed any real primary as soon as he made that decision.

Expand full comment

But you are missing the point of primaries. They all had the chance to run. No one stopped them and Dean Phillips is wildly not experienced enough to run. Not to mention he dumped his wife and kids and moved to Washington with his girlfriend and then married her. To me he is no better than Trump.

Expand full comment

You're completely missing the point. This isn't a defense of Philips or TFG. Please see my response to your other comment just below.

Expand full comment

I understand what you are saying Mike, when Joe finally said he was run again, no other Dem dared to run against him except Phillips and Williamson, that Stein woman and one other person I thought but frankly, the outliers should have stayed at home. It was not a vibrant Primary.

Interesting fact about Phillips that I did not know Susie. McCain had a girlfriend or two also, from what I have read.

Expand full comment

That is exactly what Biden pointed out today! So you want him to throw all the people who did vote for Biden under the bus and say that people like OH Susie's vote isn't worth crap. That is not how the game is played.

Expand full comment

No. Biden didn’t order others not to run. That is what Trump does. To suggest it wasn’t fair to others who could not win the nomination is unfair to Joe and untrue.

Expand full comment

Sorry, Susie, but you're simply denying or forgetting the reality of what happened. Biden said he would be a one term president to transition us away from TFG and re-establish our place domestically and internationally. He did a fantastic job of doing that, IMO. That said, as soon as he announced he would run again, the primary became a formality with no stomach or desire by the DNC or serious presidential hopefuls to make a run. No one wanted to destroy the democratic party's incumbent. Few times in history has there been a serious challenge to the incumbent, and it doesn't end well.

Had Biden kept his "one term" word that he gave prior to the election of 2020 to allay fears about his age, there would have been an actual primary with people like Harris, Newsome, Whitmer, just to name a few, running. No serious candidate was willing to destroy their president. If you don't understand this, I have nothing else to say.

Expand full comment

Exactly, Biden kept all waiting as he was deciding. One and done should have been persuaded esp since that was his intention initially.

Expand full comment

How about the fact that maybe Biden felt that he was the most experienced person to run the country and felt that it was his duty to continue keep going on the good projects that he was accomplishing. Also I am sure that he feels that he is the one to make sure that Ukraine has a fighting chance. That war had not started when he was elected. The times have changed. I trust that he has good reasons why he would change his mind. The stock market likes him. It hit another record high today. The woman of this country will put him back in office, so relax you men.

Expand full comment

Biden is not well. He’s not going to get better. Why won’t he get a cognitive or neurological exam and release the results? He’s showing complete disregard to those of us who are very concerned about his health and if he can beat trump and keep our democracy. I watched my parents, grandparents and now my friends decline as they aged. The similarities are striking and frightening. I have voted for and supported Biden — just sent a contribution last month. At this crucial point , he needs to gracefully bow out. He cannot beat trump. He will destroy his legacy. He — and all a democrats — will be blamed as trump and the MAGAts further erode our rights.

I heard the President on Morning Joe today. He is the Joe Biden that we all know and have supported. I’m willing to give him the benefit of the doubt and continue to support him for the election. I’m pleased with VP Harris. He surrounds himself with experts, and I think he listens to them. So go Joe!!

Expand full comment

The President Biden that we all know and have supported shows up on good days. I call him SOTU Biden. And then there’s Debate Biden, who stood slack-jawed and diminished on a stage with the worst President of my lifetime, unable to counter the spew of garbage lies that permeated Trump’s debate performance. After much internal conflict and a little despair, I have concluded that while I admire and respect Biden, we simply cannot risk Debate Biden showing up during a crisis, a time when nothing but SOTU Biden will do. And as far as the nation obviously being run by presidential aides, that is a non-starter for me. If you have not watched the debate all the way through,do it today. No looking away during the worst of it. Heartbreaking, and frightening.

Expand full comment

My other concern is SOTU Biden, just like day after rally in NC Biden, was reading from a teleprompter. Not being able to state your positions and clear policy winners unless you're reading them is a problem. That TFG's team has to do nothing - no deep fakes, no cheap fakes - just show a few excerpts from the actual debate, is a huge problem. Everything in response to that from the Biden campaign will just be failed excuses.

Expand full comment

He has given several interviews without prompters. And btw, speaking from a prompter takes thought also, to emphasize in the right places and Biden rocked it. Trump can’t even read from a teleprompter correctly. He’s all monotone when he does pronounce words correctly.

Expand full comment

He also held radio "interviews" with Black hosts, but gave them the approved questions in advance. This is a choreographed cover-up.

Expand full comment

Keep dreaming. Ad lib Joe is not the same as teleprompter Joe. Pure delusion if you think it's the same. And we already stipulate that TFG is a lying POS, so not the point and a completely different standard he's held to. Not saying that's right, but just the way it is.

Expand full comment

True…and very sad..that we find ourselves here. So much is at stake…

Expand full comment

Agreed. And, btw, he didn’t flub the entire 90 minute debate. Trump kept yapping even though his mic was off.

Expand full comment

The Nile is a river. Denial is not. You could not have watched the debate and honestly believe a vacuous stare, open mouthed, incoherent Biden was TFG's fault? And I'm talking about how it started with Biden walking out and his opening statement. There were brief moments of lucidity, but too brief and he was lost most of the night.

RE POSTING THIS ANSWER:

I know from much travel between N.Y. and Tokyo for decades till my mid 60s, tho I was in great shape, it still took me four days to get “normal“ again after returning to New York. I love my work, but it was stressful. CanNOT compare to Biden’s heavy involvement with high-level diplomats, deeply important issues, etc., where he must be at the TOP OF HIS GAME every minute. THEN a trip to Korea, totally different time zone.

On the stage with that hideous liar , Biden knows his issues, his policies & the truth, but he was not prepared for the barrage of lies and putdowns lobbed at him. He had just been through two weeks of highly intelligent, formal meetings with educated, professional diplomats. THAT IS HIS WORLD. Trump embodies none of that. No one could have anticipated the volume of lies and fetid barbs thrown at Biden so fast, totally outside the proper, anticipated format of the evening.

You could see the frustration and confusion on his face which I deeply felt was his not knowing WHICH of these monstrous lies he should counter, knowing that he had only ONE MINUTE to rebut.

It was impossible to counter a fraction of the lies thrown at him.

Still recovering from heavy Jetlag, And being rundown from a cold, he had to choose the ONE correct retort that would make a difference, but he had an unfair lack of time to even make the right choice to lob back at his oppressor.

THAT was the confusion we saw on his face!

The frustration of the impossibility of this situation sapped his energy, and the whole scenario was disastrous, but NOT his fault!

And NOT an indication of his abilities , or intellectual or mental capacity!

We have all seen that Trump will not allow anyone to speak or fully express a complete thought or truth before he jumps down their throat with his BS. Even if Biden was in peak condition, IE not jetlagged, he would not have had the time or the ability to sort through the lying barrage and articulate a compelling retort IN A MINUTE.

He is honest, thoughtful and methodical! Which is what we want in our President!

Trump embodies none of these attributes.

Trump just naturally vomits the same rote lies for years, without needing any time or thought to formulate it.

Let's not look at it as a vote for an old, feeble man but for a strong and well-developed Biden Administration. Expand full comment

Sounds like political violence threat - kinda mobby - Right?

That makes DJT and his cottier so much more un-electable and detestable.

Yes I’m referring to that stupid comment from Kevin Roberts. I like “there will be blood” better. It sounds meaner, tougher and I picture D Day Lewis aka the Butcher (2 different movies I know) delivering some powerhouse blows to Kevin’s stupid bald head. Dems are stronger than these bloodshedding blustering candy-ass heretic foundation bullies. He wants a fight? He will get one. I’m incentivized.

It will be the fault of stupid people who have not realized this a binary decision. Good vs evil.

Exactly, I couldn't agree more. Read what the Urantia Book says about evil.

Jaime Harrison cannot dismiss the Dems who voted for Biden.

Jaime Harrison was never elected to be DNC chair he was appointed by the campaign staff. Biden's campaign staff is completely responsible for debacle. They are fucking amatures.

I have also felt that the campaign staff is not doing such a great job. Who is the campaign manager? Are they all working on a campaign for the first time? Their inability to react and act quickly seems to be a serious problem
