A historic week in American politics is underway with a letter from President Biden to Democratic members of Congress as they return to Washington, DC. It reads:
Let’s unpack the letter.
The letter is an ultimatum of sorts from the president, which promises a sort of grace for the mutineers who are absolved as essentially good intentioned, but deeply misguided. Does the letter end the rebellion or stoke it ? This is the question of the hour for a campaign that is stalled, listing, incoherent, losing and utterly lost.
President Biden is correct about something that should be discussed directly and forthrightly. The decision around whether to withdraw from the race belongs entirely to President Biden. Choosing self over country is the prerogative of the man who holds the delegates for the nomination.
Is that a fair characterization?
Where is the line? Part of the Biden proposition is that he’s just getting started, while simultaneously refusing to utter a syllable about the future. The inherent structure of the choice as it presently stands from the portions of the debate that were decipherable between the two men was that things were better than ever when Trump was in charge versus things are better than ever with Biden in charge. Nostalgia is a much more powerful magnet than present circumstances.
President Biden is a mortally wounded political candidate who is going to lose the election to Donald Trump, according to chief Obama strategist David Axelrod. Joe Biden doesn’t see it that way. How do you see it?
I think every Democrat in a close race should be getting ready to make the divided government argument, where they explicitly run as a check against the inevitable Trump presidency. There is a strong likelihood that Trump will win with a MAGA House and Senate majority. The judiciary will be further radicalized, and they will have carte blanche to implement Trumpism. There will be no party more responsible for that catastrophe than Joe and Jill Biden. Should it come to pass, it will be a villainous and selfish act, and it will always be remembered as such.
I have always admired Joe Biden, and the saddest part of this spectacle is the immolation of his reputation that lies ahead, joined at the hip with Trump’s restoration.
Will the letter work?
The polling this week is going to be very tough.
Events are unfolding moment by moment. One thing is clear: tumult lies ahead.
Why change mid stream after primaries were excepted? Funny how when an old person has trouble getting info out is lambasted. No go on my part.
Those thinking for new opportunity should have done so way back when primaries started. We will all back him when push comes to shove to save our Democracy!
I heard the President on Morning Joe today. He is the Joe Biden that we all know and have supported. I’m willing to give him the benefit of the doubt and continue to support him for the election. I’m pleased with VP Harris. He surrounds himself with experts, and I think he listens to them. So go Joe!!
