Neither the press nor our justice system nor our politics, all being corporate owned, have proven equal to the challenge posed by a second-rate, malevolent, deeply flawed huckster. The Heritage Foundation is compiling McCarthyesque lists of “subversives” in government. The Federalist Society has poisoned our judiciary with reactionary fascist enablers. Our political “leadership” - even our DOJ - responds with the occasional, tepid “they shouldn’t do that” before retreating to their customary wait-and-see posture. Even a courageous politician like Kamala Harris must choose her words cautiously lest she fall victim to a torrent of Supreme Court-approved dark money. And the corporate MSM reports it all as normal while holding the two presidential candidates to wildly different standards. As long as money remains speech and corporations remain people and presidents are chosen by the Electoral College our democracy will continue to teeter on the edge of collapse.
Members of the Republican Party, going back to the 1990’s are responsible for this. Newt Gingrich and Mitch McConnell being chief among them. Gingrich introduced the divisive and oppositional us vs them attitude, and McConnell pushed for unchecked campaign financing. I hope they both suffocate under the weight of their destructive legacies.
Tom Nichols wrote an article for The Atlantic yesterday that said millions of our fellow Americans will vote for this desiccated cretin not IN SPITE of his violent ideations and his promises to hurt “the enemy within”, which is US, but BECAUSE of these promises. They WANT IT. They are filled with grievance and they want to see their fellow Americans be punished and suffer. Tucker Carlson wants it. JD Vance wants it. Stephen Miller REALLY wants it. And so many more who will be our “leaders” alongside the malevolent Trump.
I am very afraid for our nation. Thirteen days from now we could very well be living in profound fear and dread.
I understand, to some degree, why lower middle class, uneducated people are voting for Trump. Why they vote against their own interests is unbelievable. What I don’t understand, is why wealthy, educated people are voting for him. I assume they think he will protect their financial interests. When I brought up Trump’s authoritarian rhetoric to a wealthy acquaintance, I was told, you don’t think he really means that stuff, do you, and laughed. These are the people who scare me.
Agree Lisa, if we can possibly get a win this time trumpism is the worst ‘ism’ there currently is proposed. Everyone is stunned. We need another October surprise.
We now know what MAGA and Trump means when they speak about when America was great. It was in 1798 and again in the U.S. in the late 1930s when Nazis were a potent and puerile force. Trump plans to recreate the Nazi rally event of Feb. 20, 1939 organized by the German-American Bund. This will be his closing message before the election. This should give everyone shivers down their spine!
This is exactly what he hopes to do. But, I believe he is on defense. Democrats have unleashed the heavy artillery and its power is augmented by the diversity of those speaking openly about the Trump/Maga threat to our way of life; people from Barrack Obama to Mark Milley and John Kelly, from M and M to Bruce Springteen, from Robert Dinero to YOU and ME and others like us raising our voices in the face of this ugliest possible threat to our children, our grandchildren, and future generations.
Steve, I have notified, through email, all I thought might be interested in the Warning. Thank you for a frightening and accurate presentation of the momentous decision we will make on 11/5.
Thank you so much for doing that. I'm very grateful to you -- and also for your incredible level of engagement and insight within this great community.
TFG has provided a permission structure for or amplified:
- Violence
- Hatred
- Racism
- Misogyny
- Being a victim
- Retribution/Vengeance
- Distrust of Government
- Distrust of Institutions
And those are just off the top of my head. If I had a few more minutes to really think about it, I'm sure I could come up with a few more. Pathetic and unreal that this election could go either way.
This is what people vote for now. Tragic. The shock to my system came in 2020 when North Carolina elected Mark Robinson Lieutenant Governor AFTER he said the country was better off when women did not have the right to vote. He won by 300,000 votes. Men and women. Incredible.
Why people vote a certain way has flummoxed me for years. And this MAGA cult thing has made this abject stupidity clearer to me. We’re sinking. Two examples and they are bipartisan ones.
In Tennessee, men and women keep returning Marsha Blackburn to office, even after she voted against two Federal laws that addressed equal pay for women. She has called subsidized childcare communism, has voted to repeal the ACA, and is ambivalent about laws addressing violence against women. Why would you keep her as your rep?
In New Jersey, for over a generation, voters kept Bob Menendez in Congress, despite the strong stench of corruption. His first corruption trial ended in a hung jury. He felt vindicated. Hilarious. His second trial found $400,000 in cash stuffed into clothing and gold bars hidden in his home. It took law enforcement to do what voters could not do. Why keep him as your rep?
I am beyond exhausted with Trumpism. He may very well win. If he does , our country will not be fit to live in. Think about what you’d have done in 1939 Germany if you had known then what you know now. Plan accordingly.
No blood on my hands. Lifelong Democrat who was never once lured into voting for a Republican. Always saw the party for what it was. Now, the wound of this party’s failing ideas have been ripped wide open by Trump and the new and worse version of the GOP.
In the past, in New Jersey, I voted for a few Republicans running for state office. The Republicans in New Jersey were mostly moderate people. People like Tom Kean, who for I worked for in a governmental job. But I have never voted for a Republican for President. Not Reagan, the Bushes, none. None for Senate, neither. I’ll never ever vote for a Republican, not even for county sewage treatment director, because we need sensible decent people, not these Republican Assholes.
As a native N.J. resident until 2014, I am most impressed with Christine Todd Whitman, our former Republican Governor, publicly supporting Harris and criticizing Trump.
Steve: Why is it that no media person, including you, ever asks a republican office holder or office seeker if they are embarrassed or ashamed by being a member of a party which has a felon convicted of 34 fraud counts as its head and presidential candidate. I wonder what the response would be. I remember when democratic Sen. Gary Hart was running for president and a photo emerged of him on a boat named "Monkey Business" with a young woman (not his wife) in a bathing suit sitting on his lap. He ended his campaign in a matter of days! The grifter certainly trumps Sen. Hart's behavior by a wide margin. I guess that there is no shame anymore.
Core principle of American creed that enshrines the rights of all humans in a fair and equitable foundation will never be defeated. It will always rise up again and again. The spirits that hold up such righteous cause will endure. We will always come back and come together to fight and protect our freedom and democracy. Here is the come back kid Bruce Springsteen in Atlanta today. His best performance of The Promise Land, live, in support of Kamala. https://youtu.be/03VuWPQ-zyU?si=LXOwI-fQZqdBqFvv
We have two weekends left on the campaign to elect Vice President Kamala Harris and Governor Tim Walz. So, if you’re looking for an opportunity to volunteer, this is it.
JOIN A VOLUNTEER CANVASS: Sign up to join one of many free bus trips to Pennsylvania this weekend. We’ll provide the transportation and training needed to have conversations with voters.
JOIN A VOLUNTEER PHONE BANK: Sign up to make calls to Pennsylvania voters from the comfort of your home. We’ll provide you with a virtual training and the tools needed to have conversations with voters.
We need to reach millions of people over the next two weekends, and your conversation with a voter could be the only reason they decided to show up on Election Day
In these times, Henry David Thoreau is a sage. He was ambivalent about the idea of democracy being this great thing because he was living in a democracy that kept slaves. I can see his point, and slavery of course gave us the Electoral College. The only reason it exists is because of slavery. Majority rule does not impart to the majority wisdom or justice.
I’m still reconciling myself to the fact that this is apparently a very close election. It does not say much for the country.
We all are every board says the same thing people never really thought this rapist could be back this close again.

I would argue that those who voted for them are responsible.

I agree !
Sad, very very sad .. the orange dude is so out of control …

Pure Powerful Excellence, Steve! Thank You!

Isn’t that strange though Dems eat their own at times and times change but this is too way too drastic!
