So...a group of elitist, billionaire oligarchs...most especially Musk..used their vast resources to gaslight millions of regular, hardscrabble Americans and got those easily fooled, gullible dupes to support a horrid creature such as Trump to be our next president. And now, those poor, hard working folks are going to be the ones who suffer the most under the Musk/Trump Kleptocracy. Way to go, America.

Why do you say that Biden Administration will be remembered for nothing! That is BS

HERE is the beginning of some of his accomplishments:

Passed

the $1.2 trillion bipartisan infrastructure package to increase investment in the national network of bridges and roads, airports, public transport and national broadband internet, as well as waterways and energy systems.

Helped get more than 500 million life-saving COVID-19 vaccinations in the arms of Americans through the American Rescue Plan.

Stopped a 30-year streak of federal inaction on gun violence by signing the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act that created enhanced background checks, closed the “boyfriend” loophole and provided funds for youth mental health.

Made a $369 billion investment in climate change, the largest in American history,

History knows. He stopped the anti-vax (the President that did so little) from further damaging the economy from the Covid-19 then provided the stimuli to bring it back. No big deal to some but how about record after record high of the stock market. He will be remembered for setting the model for stopping any Pandemic then turning the damage to a win. Ukraine v Russia and Russia sucks and is a serial killer he could have gone on to finish them.

Expand full comment

He did all that. But he will not be remembered for it a) because the Trump administration will dismantle as much of it as it can, b) because democrats are completely incapable of a PR campaign to let people know they did all that, c) American's have very short memories, d) what they will remember is he made it possible for a second Trump administration by not stepping aside soon enough for a democratic primary to take place. It is heartbreaking that he delivered so much to the American people they were not astute enough to realize it. And the heartbreak is just getting started.

Expand full comment

He would have been remembered as one of the greats and his accomplishments will still resound, except he reneged on his promise to be a transitional leader and pass the torch. He set the stage then for a Trump reboot. And now we have it. 74 million voters demurred, but it wasn’t enough.

Your “Warning” makes me a nervous wreck! :) But I need to hear it and so do the rest of right thinking people (and perhaps the others—even if they won’t listen overtly—they’ve been brainwashed once, so let’s go for twice). I hear you—a year of hell (and more for sure) but a response. I recall his first reign—the government and our response was tepid. Pink pussycats??? I’m a “militant” feminist and to the left of Bernie, and I don’t do pink things. I’m also 79 and not dead yet! I’m ready to be heard—NOW, and we do not have the leadership to do that. I’d really like to hear what you I think about how we are going to “sandblast” the Dem party to change the landscape of leadership. (I do not believe in violence—“sandblast” is a metaphor)! Thanks Steve. You scare me to death, but you brighten my day!

I do not believe the Democratic party is flat on its back. Trump won by a thin margin and more people voted for Democrats to be Representatives and Senators than for Republicans. It is a result of our giving more weight to smaller states and extreme gerrymandering that has led a minority party to control both houses of Congress.

The Progressives in the party need to take over the party and they desperately need to learn how to EXPLAIN CLEARLY to average Americans how much better off they would be with Progressives in control.

Expand full comment

Agreed. Dems are not flat on their backs!

Expand full comment

Agree. Not flat on their backs. But the democrats are not long-term thinkers, strategists, planners, doers. Hindsight is easy, but it was not hard to see 40 years ago (50 or 60), at least in Gingrich's time, that the republicans had very long term goals and candidate types in mind (what we're seeing today and back in Reagan's time) and the strategies to execute them, including Fox News and 1,500 radio stations broadcasting 24/7 a billion megawatts of conservative propaganda across the swing states, and the clever establishing of a social media propaganda network from the get-go. And gradually but with geological grinding force they made America much more stupid and incurious, purposefully eroding quality self-inquiry education while promoting instinctive racism and bigotry. The Chinese and Japanese are successful long term thinkers, extrapolating out to a hundred years of more. And so are the Republicans - very successful as we see. The democrats are masters of short term thinking and astonishingly lack deep critical thinking and history-watching skills. Hopefully, the new crop of democratic leaders (the younger and young ones) have transformative moments of self-realization over this and are able to mobilize long term thinking and some kind of effective counters to republican fascist propaganda and the pandemic-like spread of rabid stupidity.

You hit the nail on the head. The new head of the DNC must organize a panel of technocrats to counter this propaganda. Developing a communications strategy to counter one embedded and evolving for over 40 years will not be easy, but it is essential for progress in America.

They do need to get better at explaining. But we are way past the part where they create good legislation, go out and explain it to people, and sit back and wait for adoration. Half the country will never hear their "explanations." They aren't listening anymore. R's are eating each other right now. But they will turn on the rest of us soon enough. D's will need to get smarter, faster and more ferocious. But to your point, Sherrod Brown is making some sense to me -- Get back to being the party for the working class in demonstrable ways. D's need to pick their fights with the R's and take it to them in ways that clearly prove who they are for. I'm not talkin' press conferences and commercials.

Expand full comment

Though he lost his Ohio Senate seat to Trump's Bernie Moreno, Sherrod Brown could be the kind of man we need to save the party. His unassuming ordinary American appeal and strong support for the working class could play well in these troubled times.

I suggest that the opposition should focus on the stuff that will cut across the American people. Don't argue about culture and other issues that play into Trump's wheelhouse. Instead, the rise of a police state and the domestic use of the military along with the creation of detention centers will not sit well with most people. Perhaps not at first but once troops are going into schools and workplaces people will react.

Also, the failure of Trump's economic policies and rising inflation will hurt most people. Tie that to income inequality and the coterie of billionaires with whom Trump has surrounded himself.

The opposition has to stand for the lives of the average American. Fight for them. Fight for fairness. Fight for the ability to get ahead. Fight for the Constitution.

All those maga voters are fine with all of his disgusting behavior. Guilty on 34 counts ... that is fine with them. No I don't think we can feel sorry for them and I don't think they will have learned anything no matter what he does. No matter how he mishandles the country I don't see them getting upset. Steve my observation is that these clowns are following the Blueprint of the French Revolution. First the storming of the Bastille and the Palace to exact revenge against the government. Then the madman Rose Pierre played by Trump sets up Guillotines for public executions of the enemy within. Napoleon played by Elon takes over, crowns himself Emperor and leads the country into wars of Aggression dooming the country with his insanity. Our Founders wrote the Constitution to avoid these kinds of crimes against humanity. Now is the time for all good people to come to the aid of their country. Let’s Roll.

2025 will indeed be a momentous year as co-presidents Musk and Trump roll out their oligarch-centered plans for our country. But please, let’s not wait for a spark to ignite, let’s start now building a bonfire under the butts of our elected folks, letting them know what we expect from them. The time for stunned silence and mute acceptance is OVER.

The harmfulness of Nationalism like Steve Schmidt's is equal to MAGA's nationalism.

We are a country od billionaires and the poor, side by side' what is GREAT about that?

Tax the rich and share the wealth! Then and only then would be just average and decent; Not GREAT. Decent would be enough.

GREAT is hubristic term that all ancients knew leads to dictators and tyrants.

Our goal should be to be average.
