Thank you for reminding us what Congress can look like. The Rayburn Building is a fitting memorial to the man

Now on to this week’s latest installment of Real MAGAs of Capitol Hill. I hope you are correct Jordan cannot reach the magic 217 seeing the threading Hannity email sent yesterday and rumors Armed Services Rs is united against Jordan, I am hopeful he will not be elected

We have a budget to pass and a two front war. Much work without the House Reality show. Can we please let the adults lead?

In all fairness, Trump did have an Infrastructure Month, every year of his presidency. Trump was usually golfing at one of his resorts at the time, and the country spoke of everything, except Infrastructure.

So give credit, where credit is due! After all, Trump did build 52 miles of the great beautiful wall that Mexico paid for, so there’s that!

As for the three ring circus, the only viable solution is for six to ten members of the problem solver’s caucus to switch party affiliation’s (independent), and caucus with democrats. The Republican Party is DOA!

Truly the only answer, can ten people be profiles in courage, doubt it I was looking to Romney, merkowski and the pusillanimous, weak and unprincipled lady from Maine to do the same. Not then, not now and unfortunately not ever!

True, but one can hope. Eventually, something has to give. Jordan is the problem, not the answer. He’s probably the most responsible in Congress for J6th and the stop the steal movement; not to mention, these kangaroo hearings about Hunter’s laptop.

The thought of Jim Jordan as Speaker of the Hose Of Representatives of the United States of America doesn’t even qualify to be a NIGHTMARE! It is too outrageous. Could not make the cut. Like out of control fish in an aquarium, the Republicans are there for everyone to see so why aren’t they seen for what they are? How can they show up in polls as preferred in their handling of ANYTHING? They can’t even put on their pants or tie their shoes or choose a leader. They define, once and for all, the inadequacy of the word STUPID. Yet, people vote for them by the millions. Please help me to understand. Right now I am trying to put on my own straightjacket so I don’t break anything valuable. And it’s not like it’s contained just in the House. It has spilled into the Senate where a former football coach is running the military or boobs like Hawley and Cruz long for a dictatorship or governor’s mansions like those in Florida or Texas where abominations are handed out like bon bons. And finally, their exalted and revered ambassador to madness, Donald Trump, looking every bit like the Portrait of Dorian Gray, where words fall out of his mouth like poop and his very existence is a catalogue of evil, a man remarkably devoid of any social value desperate to seize the White House so that he can bring down America. What does it say about America that so many people support all of the above? HELP!

Thank you Steve, for being a calm voice of reason in a sea of political and moral confusion. I was alive when Sam Rayburn ruled the House. I knew of some of his accomplishments, but not the full gamut. Your history lesson is GREATLY appreciated. And parenthetically, what in hell has happened to Texas since the time of Rayburn and Johnson? I have two words. BIG OIL. But, thanks to people like you, I still have hope that America can be saved. Keep that mighty pen of yours working.

Outstanding essay. As an elder Texan,I know the man from Bonham, Texas, Sam Rayburn. Alas, there apparently will not be any more like him to head to the Congress of the United States and serve the nation. He would shred Jim Jordan and the current gaggle of Republicans. Jordan will not be Speaker of the House. However, any Republican Speaker is bad.

“There are 14 Republican members of Congress currently representing districts that Joe Biden carried. A vote for the loony Jordan will be their political death sentence, and explains perfectly why Jordan will not reach the 218 vote threshold.”

But didn’t these 14 all vote for Kevin McCarthy? There is no courage among Republicans. When challenged to reject Trump’s choice, they’ll all fold like the cheap suits they are.

I have a personal request, Steve. Your take on the media is broad. Occasionally you mention reporters, anchors commentators that you trust, last week it was CNN staff. I’d like your take on MSNBC as it is my source of tv reporting. Thank you.

I listen to MSNBC as well - they have so many good people there. I never go to CNN anymore!

GPS with Fareed Zakaria is the only program I watch on CNN anymore.

Check out another worthwhile congressional race to help eliminate the crazies. Ilhan Omar MN 5 is being challenged again by Democrat Don Samuels. Samuels has solutions and is respected by a very broad base across Minnesota’s metro. The trance of Omar’s persona is wearing thin as she creates more problems in the district, the party and the country than she solves. Samuels is authentic. Thank you Steve for calling my attention to the Colorado contest.

Some of my students took a virtual tour of Congress online. The guide recalled that in the early 19th century, animals -- cows, sheep and goats -- grazed on the front lawn of the Capitol and some wandered into the building. A student quipped that there are still animals -- monkeys -- in Congress. The tour accentuated for me both the grandeur of our nation's Capitol and the low point the House of Reps finds itself in.

Mr Sam an under appreciated giant of the house. I believe it was volume 2 by Caro which provides an insight into genuine power and political coverage, not perfect, but compared to zoo called maga he was a messiah.

Just a few questions...why is Louis DeJoy still in place deliberately destroying the postal service?

Why hasn’t there been any motions by the DOJ to remove Eileen Canon from the Documents Case in Florida?

Why is Jim Jordan not accountable for not submitting to a congressional subpoena?

Why isn’t Meadows, Flynn, Stone, Congressmen Lee and Cruz not being held accountable for their participation in planning the Jan 6 insurrection?

Why aren’t the Dems trying to replace Biden and at least Harris?

Why aren’t the Dems fighting back against Trump’s firehose of lies, flubs, and demagogue speeches?

No.

The House Republicans for exceed any dysfunction to be encountered in a prison or asylum; these arenas have an expectation of disorder and entropy that is simply dwarfed by this miasma, unto themselves a next level creature cantina.

My hope is that enough Americans have learned that voting for Representation is equally, if not More, important than that of President.

Had she managed a mere half dozen more Dem reps, we'd not be in this clown show, having squeezed the House into the extremism with which we're currently blessed.

If Jordon becomes Speaker it will be nothing but bombastic chaos and total dysfunction.

Robert,

If you’re suggesting that I’m censoring you that is simply not the case. I encourage people to share their views within this community even if they are different from my own. Always have and always will.

I suspect there may have been a glitch with the Substack platform when you tried to comment. I’d encourage you to try again.

With thanks,

Steve

I've respectfully disagreed with Steve a few times and never been censored so I suspect a glitch somewhere. Respectful disagreements are, in my opinion, a necessary feature of Substack. Being open to others' opinions can expand our knowledge and we need a whole lot of that lately. Maybe it will clandestinely seep into the MAGA community. One can dream.
