We go to Vancouver for two months every year. Just to escape the heat and PTSD of Trump. Not at all surprised that you love it. BC is kind, sane, loving. I wish some of it could wear off on America.

It's my favorite city in North America!

Vancouver is unique and special. Healing. As for a disease unique to America, we have MAGA-itis. This viral strain kept from the Devil to Donald Trump, who has spread it through mostly rural America. It rots the soul and eliminates morality and conscience and reason. Now, the host, Trump, is “selling” a gold watch for $100k. Me thinks it’s his way of getting laundered cash for his campaign. It is Electile Disfunction. And illegal.

That's what Trump has always been -- unbearable.

That right there is funny; I don't care what anyone says.

I love everything about this story, but the picture and sound is the best part of all. Enjoy, enjoy, enjoy! We may sometimes let nature down, but it is always there for us when we truly need it to be. Have a great time Steve. I no longer enjoy the sight of my golden/bald eagles soaring over majestic mountains, but I shall never forget the privileges of my life, nor its obligation, like setting out salt licks for the local deer population as they marched across our property toward the reservoir in blizzard conditions. Nature's calm and beauty rejuvenates us all, even when it is challenging us.

I did not have such a dream this morning, but sort of. With Hurricane Helene pounding the mountains of western North Carolina, I was reminded of the people living there. They can vote for Mark Robinson and Michele Morrow — believers that science is fake and should not be taught in public schools — or they can instead say to themselves that smart future climate scientists educated in North Carolina can help the country and the world. What a dream.

There is no doubt that the size and intensity of the storm was a result of man's impact on the climate. When you reject science and turn to whatever religion you cherish and pretend your faith has all the answers, you lose, bigly. There are many out there willing to use your gullibility against you; Vance, Trump, evangelical leaders, many of whom know they are full of shit, are leading the pack of scammers and cheats.

BC is awesome. In the 1980s there was a movement to start clear-cutting the old-growth forest. I remember wearing a t-shirt that year that said "My Canada includes Clayoquot Sound" - echoes of a slogan from the 1985 Québec independence referendum, "My Canada includes Québec". The conservation movement succeeded, as did federalism in the Québec referendum. May the soaring eagles of Tofino bless our American friends with similar victories for decency and common sense in the November elections.

Yes, the PTSD from these last 10 years has taken its toll.

yes, a bear shits in the woods and a Trump shits all over everything. I actually saw a bear ambling up the sidewalk when I was in Tofino last. Here's hoping this is the time that the bear gets what's left of the GOP.

As Steve predicted, the Maga crowd is getting more and more extreme, crazier and crazier as Trump's campaign begins to unravel. We need to coin a word that is stronger than incredible and mindboggling for this phenomenon.

JD Vance will be accompanied by the truly insane evangelical "Christian" preacher Lance Wallnau at a town hall tomorrow in Pennsylvania. Wallnau believes that Harris performed so well in the debate because of the power of seduction that comes with witchcraft. He belongs in 17thc. Salem or Spain during the Reformation. He would have been very comfortable as Grand Inquisitor.

He is a strong proponent of the "Seven Mountain Mandate" that calls for Christian control of seven aspects of society: family, religion, education, media, arts and entertainment, business, and government.

Project 2025, anyone?

Steve, if you're not already staying there, go have lunch at the Wickaninnish Inn. If it's stormy enough, you'll think one of the waves is going to end up in your lap. But I digress. You have mentioned numerous times about the notion of "character" as it applies to our elections and candidates. Yesterday's NYT's opinion piece by General Stanley McCrystal did as well. With all the harping on this-or-that policy, in my mind the notion of character serves as our collective, common denominator; something that we should all have the same, basic, definition of; allowing our choice of the next President to be kind of a no-brainer. But it's clear that approximately half of the country either ignores this trait or defines it differently than I do. If things don't go the way that I want them to in November, I may decamp to Tofino....

I recall the totem pole you have in your kitchen area when you were on MSNBC from time to time. Exquisite. We've had many trips to this part of the world, including expeditions into Alaska. Through the NW Passage and Vancouver Island. I'm a born and bred New Englander, but if I had to leave this home, that's where I'd land.

It was magnificent. If you've been to Stanley Park in Vancouver and walked around all their totem poles...a wonderful sampling from many of the native tribes in western Canada. Steve has impeccable taste.

Steve, I believe the expression is "Sometimes you eat the bear and sometimes the bear eats you". I was up there on the west coast of Vancouver Island way back in 75-76 and hitch hiked up a logging road(red dirt) to a hidden road which led out to Mystic Beach a small probably 100 yards of beach with a tiny little house built out of driftwood and visqueen all glued together with pure enchantment, there is something about the ocean up there that just stays with you like a great story...

They not only accept Bitcoin, I'm sure they prefer it for easier money laundering. The watch movement (innards) are the same as the best from Alibaba, Temu, and AliExpress. The designs and specs are about the same as watches found there for $50-$80, OR you can buy just the movement for $30 (free shipping!). I wonder if we can put a tariff on it.
