“Donald Trump, on the other hand, is barely literate, usually incoherent, and profoundly ignorant. His grasp of the English language has always been tenuous, and it raises a question that must be asked on this, the second day of The Donald’s hush money/porn star/business fraud/election interference trial. Perhaps America’s most prolific serial liar just made the quote up — like he invented it out of thin air on the spot?”

All very true Steve. Not only has Trump managed to murder the English language, he’s also managed to kill the art of satire in America. That in itself, is a catastrophe!

What’s interesting is how so many power hungry republican politicians who still believe Trump instigated the insurrection, believe Trump is still fit to serve, just because he’s a running as a republican. Trump has no moral standards. He doesn’t represent the conservative wing of the party and was a democrat before he sought office. He inspires hate and retribution against anyone who has the audacity to stand up against the man.

Now we have some smart politicians like JD Vance and Sununu that have abandoned ship and joined the Chump Train. Do these people seriously not understand it’s a runaway train; about to derail?

What does it take for these power hungry idiots to actually stand up for America? All of them are morally bankrupt scoundrels who know better, but crave power more than they believe in our republic.

True profiles in courage; if they lived in Russia or N. Korea. Traitors to the Constitution and unfit to represent America and its interests abroad. These people are the problem, not the solution.

Good times!….:)

When I heard trump’s remarks in a place far from Gettysburg, I laughed out loud at first but then remembered that this criminal buffoon is a candidate for President. His cult members must have undergone an alien procedure to remove their cerebral cortexes. They are as ignorant and ill equipped to cast a vote for President as a 5 year old child. Still hopeful that the dominoes will continue to fall on this man as he faces a reckoning in court for his crimes.

Minnesota here. We became a state in 1858. On April 15, 1861, Minnesota was the first state to pledge troops in answer to Lincoln’s call. The list of battles the First Minnesota participated in is a horror show of bloodshed. On the second day of Gettysburg, the First Minnesota was thrown into a gap to allow reinforcements to come forward. They suffered horrendous casualties. They may have saved the battle. Hearing that nasty little man mouth his idiocies fills me with rage.

You are absolutely right about the First Minnesota, they were key to the victory. I share your rage

Yeeeehaaaaw, Steve! Sorry, I just had to get that out of my system. Great piece of writing! I will bet you wake up in the middle of the night with a cohesive article in your head, just waiting to be manifest in the physical. Keep it flowing! I love your witty perspective on the present and its connection with the past! 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾

“…Robert E. Lee, who’s no longer in favor. Did you ever notice that? No longer in favor”. Nothing so eloquently captures the essence of DJT as his own random, deranged, ignorant utterances. And nothing in life has prepared most of us for this malevolent imbecile, nor the fact that he retains the tacit or overt support of virtually all establishment Republicans. The latter, since they know better, deserve far greater contempt than that reserved for their leader.

Most heartbreaking for me is to see the minorities that he denigrated voting for him.

I can only assume his speechwriter is 1. Not familiar with English as a spoken language.

2. Or has been thrown from a window somewhere in Russia.

Must hand it to him, I was laughing so hard I was almost crying as I heard this demented clip.

To say Trump is overrated is one of the greatest understatements of all time. He is making a mockery of the media and all Americans who take him seriously outside of being a great conman and propagandist. A personality disordered individual who is going senile according to experts, who is ignorant of history and politics, and who had no previous governing or leadership experience outside of his crooked family company. He has lessened America on the world stage, no matter how one looks at it. This is part of the reason our enemies love him. As John Bolton recently said, also in a tremendous use of understatement, Tump is "not qualified to be president."

Steve, maybe you can also comment on the role Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain played in this important battle. As I live in Maine, we never forget his role fighting the Alabama regiment without ammunition. They had run out and yet prevailed through bravery.

That this piece of horse manure is mentioned in a post about the Gettysburg Address and the 2nd Inaugural Address is heartbreaking just for the distance of the fall we've endured.

Good Read. Too bad we are stuck in this political war of words, with one party jumping ship and the other party nearly not bothered.

I'm voting blue 💙 again this year.

I'm glad you went there. I respect Abraham Lincoln.

My great great grandfather came from Ireland in the 1840’s Potato Famine. He served in the, Iron Brigade(Wisconsin 2nd, 5th and 6th Infantry). To mention Trump and our Civil War belittles my ancestors’ service.

To mention the most infamous draft dodger from a family of dodgers only lessens the service of my lineage. My grandfather was born in Germany then became a U.S. citizen only to serve in WWI, France, on behalf of our Army. Imagine his thoughts going trench to trench fighting against an army that could contain relatives similar to his grandfather’s dilemma in the Civil War.

My father served in WWII, South Pacific. His younger brother served a 30 year, Naval career, mostly in Japan postwar. His brother married a fine Japanese lady and are still married these many decades later, both in their 90’s. My father greeted his sister-in-law with open arms. His nieces and nephews became our favorite cousins.

I mention these incidents of my family’s assimilation of other Americans, who, by sheer happenstance, came from other countries. Just like all Americans(save Native Americans) they came from other lands. Trump wants to pit citizens against each other for political gain. His use of fear and hate erases our common decency to see ourselves in others regardless of their origin.

We all came from somewhere different and have a collective gain in recognition of that beginning.

I truly believe our country of immigrants is stronger because we are a country of immigrants.

Trump and his ilk can go to hell.

And I left out my oldest brother. A 25 year Lt. CMMDR, retired after 10 years(1968-78) in Marines and 15 years(1982-98) Navy. My youngest brother jumped out of perfectly good airplanes and finally my oldest stepson, a 25 year SeaBee(Chief Petty Officer) with 5 Middle East tours. Also, 4 uncles that wore the uniform(1 in Korea).

You can understand how avoiding the draft was never an option. I recall watching the Vietnam draft lottery drawings of dates for mandatory service. If one of our dates was drawn, we enlisted. Never dreamed of avoiding service to a country that opened its arms in welcoming my ancestors.

I watched a program concerning the DNA of our American Indians. It matched DNA of northern China and Siberia residents. A trail was shown of their migration which aligns with your update.

I watched Trump's "Gettysburg address" and laughed out loud. What a buffoon. And what a tragedy for our country that he is not only a candidate for president, but has a good chance of winning.

The legal system can only help us so much. (And in my estimation it is failing us.) Voting is everything now. And I sure hope the Russians don't hack the election.

Crazy times.

My usual reaction to watching the orange yam is best described as “pre vomit”. I have to admit that I laughed out loud listening to his incoherent and ignorant babbling until the guilt set in. No matter how ridiculous, we must not lose sight of how DANGEROUS this creature is. Thank you, Steve, for keeping us educated, enlightened and determined in the fight to save our democracy.
