I like fish. I like birds too, but this post is about fish. I compared Lindsey Graham to a fish a few years ago in a Rolling Stone profile about his various perfidies, inconsistencies and derelictions. I made no mention of the mysterious white shark, fierce bull shark, speedy wahoo, ponderous grouper or stealthy barracuda. Nor did I mention the tantalizing anemone or lovely starfish. I compared him to the mosquito of the sea: the lowly pilot fish.

First, when my iPad dings and I see the notice of your new posting in the mornings, I am just so excited. Ok, I need a life. I don’t have the words to articulate the anger I feel over the anti-abortion rulings and rhetoric happening in this country. Yesterday as I read and listened to Graham, the word savage ran through my mind. He, along with others, are performing an all out savage assault against the women & girls of this country. I honestly don’t care about his lonely issues or what he might be hiding. I do care that a man of his nature, of his cruelty towards women, is an elected official. We must stop him, all of them. We must answer them in November and soundly defeat their sickening ideology.
Brilliant piece as always, Steve — you’ve accurately described why this man who once rated both John McCain and Joe Biden as friends (there’s a tape of him praising Biden to the skies) has become such a sad, lonely husk of a man.

Some people, deprived of normal companionship and family, would turn their energies to constructive things — he could join Habitat for Humanity to build houses for the poor, or volunteer at a food bank, or at a library, or a hospital. But instead, Lindsey joins the worst president in American history to pose on the golf course with a Russian spy.

Steve: you refer to "The Handmaid's Tale". I would hope every one of your readers has seen the series. However, for those who haven't, it's worth subscribing to Hulu for that one show alone — with its thugs, armed to the teeth, lining the streets of Gilead, ready to gun down anyone who deviates from the party line, because that's apparently the world the Lindsey Graham's and Ted Cruz's and Rick Scott's and ad infinitum want to take us to — in this case, to gun down — or to arrest and then hang — women seeking an abortion and the doctors (and staffs) who perform them.; and, as I've said in the past, with the media eating such a national nightmare up — even if it means the end of America as we know it — because it gets them the eyeballs they need, to charge top dollar for their ads.
To borrow a word from your Mike Lee piece: despicable!
“Handmaid’s Tale commander”. Nailed it. From striving to be John McCain's best buddy (I remain convinced that was purely for political gain) to aspiring to be Trump's "Sycophant Field Marshall", competing with Cruz, Johnson, Jordan, Rubio, et. al. But they love him in SC.
Identifying Graham’s essential lonliness- like the sad isolation of the MAGA crowd is brilliant. Lindsey is clearly a man with no one who loves (or even likes). Whether it’s closeted sexuality, or just being “different”, he’s been the person on the edge of a conversation. Like Nixon without Pat. That lonliness leads to abberant behaviors.
Lindsey Graham should be required to correctly identify the components of the female reproductive system on an anatomy diagram before he is permitted to draft legislation controlling it. And to refrain from saying "ewww gross" whilst doing it.

Excellent Steve. He's a fake, a phoney and knows he's ineffective. The kid we all knew in school who was invisible but got by only with his sense of humor. He's also one of the reasons I refuse to move to South Carolina from Massachusetts to join my son and his family. What are the people in this state thinking?
Whatever kompromat Putin and Trump have on Graham, it must be existential. It's the only explanation for Graham to behave like a sniveling POS boot licker. Like the kind of thing that gets you killed in the big house existential. I wonder if Graham has read Short Eyes.

Graham is both parasitic and wholly devoid of principles. The idea that a man without a partner or children has appointed himself as chief of the abortion police, solely to further ingratiate himself with MAGA World, is absurd and grotesque.
I cannot thank you enough for this essay, Steve. I really wish more men were speaking out about these issues. Reproductive freedom and bodily autonomy are issues that affect everyone - not just people with a functioning uterus.
