Steve’s is on point. Hunter is an addict and it made him do atrocious things. Trump and Kushner are addicts also, addicted to power and money and have done atrocious acts that HAVE undermined the security of our country and to democracy worldwide. Unfortunately, it isn’t just Donald and Jared, others in the government including FBI agents and numerous elected officials have the same addiction. Change and reform is needed, but most importantly, the need to hold accountable those that dishonor their democratic oath.

I support our president. I do think that what kushner has been doing is the actual grift as he was a member of trump’s administration. There were issues with his receiving security clearance. Kushner should be charged with knowingly using his as appointed position for benefit to both his and the trump family.

Regarding Hunter, he needs to be held accountable, not only for his actions (irregardless of addiction issues) in order to show that there’s no favoritism. But the gop is looking for blood as others have pointed out.

I’ve never been so disgusted as to how one person (and a cast of thousands) has broken our political system. And that he was able to incorporate his sleaziness and his atrocious family into the presidency. And the (mainly) white christian nationalists took to him to “make America great again”. Of which neither he or his party has done.

I don’t recall where I read it now, I need to go look it up, but maybe the Mueller Report? Anyway, there was a statement that caught my attention regarding Kushner in that even though he had been denied a security clearance he, along with Mike Flynn had authorized a “back door” communications channel between the White House and a Russian envoy. Something about establishing a secure line with a router with Russia and no one else able to monitor or document what was being said or shared. So he was not only dealing and trading information with the Saudi’s, he was also sharing it with the Russians. He’s despicable and needs to be held accountable as the traitor he is. Hunter Biden is sad and tragic and should be held accountable for any laws he’s broken. But primarily it seems his behavior negatively impacted himself. He didn’t come anywhere near selling or trading information with our enemies as Kushner did.

For what should Hunter Biden be held accountable?

Expand full comment

Any laws he may have broken. I’m not saying that he has broken any. I’m not personally aware of any or read any accounts that he has broken any laws. As far as what I’ve read, the most one might accuse him of is, taking advantage of and profiting from his family name, but as far as I know while it may set up some ethical questions and overstep some boundaries in that regard, I don’t think it’s illegal.

In Delaware, he’s being investigated regarding tax issues, I believe something regarding a gun, and possibly something else.

Expand full comment

The "something about a gun" involves not revealing on ONE application that he had a history of drug abuse. The only other thing that seems clear was failure to report income. He promptly paid the taxes on that income.

Poor choices? Genetic predisposition to addiction?

You don’t mean legally accountable do you?

Expand full comment

No of course.

Has Hunter actually broken laws? Every child of famous parents capitalizes on that notoriety. If there was any “there” there we would have known it during the first tfg impeachment. They tried, but conjectures are not facts and they failed to present any actionable facts.

This is my takeaway, am I wrong?

Expand full comment

I believe he is under investigation in Maryland for false statement regarding a gun permit and a tax issue. This has nothing to do with his father.

For using his name (dad’s too if I’m remembering correctly) in order to gain benefits and access to business (s) for his own personal benefit. Can’t just go after trump and cronies without acknowledging that hunter broke the law (s) also. Have to remain impartial.

Expand full comment

Tell me what law he broke, alllegedly. Using his Dad's name to get business for his own personal benefit is not a crime and in fact is done by people every day. Do you want to charge all the actors who traded on their parent's name, starting with Douglas Fairbanks, Jr. and on to Maud Apatow? I was an attorney at a law firm where one of the partners was a son of a founding partner? they even had the same name! Is that a crime? I am impartial; there is no both sides here with Hunter Bidden.

Expand full comment

I’m not disagreeing. But in the current political climate, you can’t cast hunter aside for having done what both trump/family, and probably every other member of government , corporations, people in general have done. Personally I don’t care about hunter or allegations made against him. It’s just a product of the current (broken) system of government we’ve had since 2012 (trump/maga(q). So he shouldn’t get a clean break. The Delaware DA will make decisions about what’s pertinent regarding hunter, let’s just hope it’s unbiased.

Kushner was a top official in the Whitehouse. Hunter is not! There is NO similarity between Kushner/Trump and Hunter/Biden. NONE.

Expand full comment

Yes. But isn’t that part of the point Steve is making in his essay? Trump is a master at setting up false equivalencies and the media feeds right into it, following suit. So the storyline is well if Congress is going to investigate Kushner’s activities, we also need to investigate Hunter Biden’s activities. That’s a false equivalency for several reasons that have already been pointed out, but primarily: 1. Taking advantage of your family’s name versus selling/sharing sensitive and/or classified secrets to our enemies aren’t anywhere near the same, and 2. Hunter Biden was never a member of the White House staff nor did he have access to any sensitive/classified information, as Jared Kushner did. Congress should be investigating Jared Kushner not Hunter Biden. IF (big if) Hunter Biden is suspected to have broken any laws the appropriate investigations for that would be as you’ve noted - the state of Delaware, not Congress.

I love the bit about "had his father meet with his employer" at Burisma. Throughout my childhood and early adulthood I "met" with many of my father's business associates. Dad had died by the time I finished law school, but my MOTHER certainly knew my boss.

The gop has it in for President Biden and is using hunter as their so called takedown. It is petty but they’re currently in a position to do it. If the American public would just pay attention to see its a farce.

Personally, I’ve lost faith in the American public.

Expand full comment

Of course Hunter, like all adults should be accountable, take responsibility, accept consequences and make amends, but he did not violate a sworn oath. POTUS like all responsible parents need to stand behind their children, but not save them.

I do agree. However the current political climate is very shaky. I really hope the AG is moving to indict , as what might happen in Georgia, but even with the gop’s slim majority in the House, they seem interested in trying to discredit President Biden in the media by any means necessary. Hunter’s counsel is doing the right thing by requesting information about bannon/etc.

I think the gop is wasting time regarding twitter and the laptop. But they’ve had access to the laptop via Matt Taibbi. And developed their own narrative. I hope that the American people pay attention to this nonsense, and realize that this is the gop’s priority.

They are. And currently they’re in the position to do so. Since gaining a very slim majority in the House, the extreme maga (q) have been having a field day. I just wish that the American people would see through this sham of a hearing.

One of the greatest moments of Joe Biden's career was during that debacle of a "debate" with Trump. When Trump tried to trash Hunter to score cheap points, Joe said, without hesitation, that he was proud of his son and the way he fought against addiction. It brought tears to my eyes. Every person watching who has a loved one struggling with addiction - which is almost everyone these days, it seems - saw Joe stand up for his son and knew they were seeing how a real man stands up to a bully. It made people who have experienced the struggle of addiction feel seen.

And here come the MAGA bullies, coming after Joe's son again. There really is no bottom for them.

Expand full comment

They’re coming at the president’s son as a result of a laptop that is probably cleaner than anything connecting with trump/family/cronies, but for the sake of being impartial, there’s a hint of wrongdoing on hunter’s part. It’s unfortunate with the current political climate, but the bias against both the president and his son aren’t going away anytime soon.

As a private citizen, Hunter Biden did not have the access to power that Jared Kushner did as a highly placed "advisor" to the President. The sociopaths elected to the House are out to ruin the life of a private person for their personal gain.

The president’s son Hunter has never held elected or appointed office where he has any influence over policy and as such has no business being in the cross hairs of any congressional committee. The repugnantkins continue to gloss over the majority of the insipid one’s family who were drawn to the White House as if by a super magnet. Anyone that has a legitimate interest in corruption in our government doesn’t have to look far to find it, they paraded in and out of the White House and on and off government jets for 4 years with impunity, all the while banking paychecks paid for by the people they were screwing. The difference between the clown’s clan of misfits, and Hunter Biden couldn’t be clearer, it’s sad really, that those idiot’s have nothing better to do than to demonize the president’s son because they can, they had better stay away from mirrors.

I wonder how these howling Republican stooges that have been slipped into governance will feel if they cause just what they are aiming for - the ruination or death of the son of our President. They remind me of Romans who were comfortable throwing their fellow citizens in with the lions. Everyone probably held their breath but yet were titillated by the prospect of a bloody outcome. If Hunter Biden has broken the law we have courts for justice. What Republican’s are seeking is not justice or revelation of salacious fact to use against the President. They are looking for an ultimate victory. Republicans have lost their way and the dark underbelly of their party is working hard to be victorious, like everyone here is saying, at any cost. Living day after day being assaulted by the lies and thievery of Republicans is excruciating. It feels like a caul of evil is covering our country and some days I feel hopeless.

It's like you, and all of us, are screaming into this foul, fetid, maelstrom of dense and laden wind, stating the obvious and the essential over and over and over like a Sisyphean task made so only by the cemented blinders of the intended recipients....

The fact that you have to state any of this once, much yet with metronomic frequency, is the most revealing of the netherworlds in which we are entrapped

To say there is a double standard of how Hunter Biden and Jared Kushner have been treated and mistreated by the media is an understatement for the ages. Every powerful parent with children want their sons and daughters to succeed on their own abilities. Sometimes they are hired by firms with good intentions and sometimes they are hired thinking it is a channel of access to the powerful parent. This seems to be the case for both Hunter and Jared. Their cases should have been treated and reported on with similar distinction but that would not be news, especially for the Fox News audience.

We all know how the game is played and Fox News, by their own admission is not a news organization. It is a media spin organization for the Republican party and the maga movement. In other words, it exists to cover up all misdeeds of the Republicans and lay blame and attack Democrats and their families.

Steve,

Once again you have crafted a well written straight speaking accounting of the current circumstances regarding an issue of grave importance to our national conversation..Hunter Biden is as you described..one who is deserving of grace..He has made mistakes that have fucked up his life and is now being made into a distraction from the real danger embodied by the likes of Jarad Kushner and others..

The Republicans do not care to hold to account any of the Trump family or the circle of degenerate grifters within their orbit from the corrupt treasonous conduct that they have been engaged in..What they are doing is a continuation of the attack on our Country and Democracy..Just as you have written time and again..

In other Substack newsletters, to which I am a community member, I’ve remarked that the traitors such as MTG, Lauren Boebert, Ron Johnson et al were all sent back to Congress, along with newly minted members of their ilk..JD Vance et al & George Santos for example, who amazingly is still not in a jail cell..

Our Country is in desperate times..I can’t understand why there has not been the kind of action taken to turn it around..It seems to me there must be some form of “An offer they can’t refuse” to force a reset of the current trajectory that we are on..and back to a place governed by the rule of law, the Constitution and as you have said “Better”. What the Republicans are doing seems to be working..They are moving forward, while it appears the Democrats, the defenders of our Democracy are preaching to their choir watching it happen..

I don’t understand it..
