Nikki Haley reminds me of the cliché of a beauty pageant contestant answering questions about subjects she obviously knows little about. She is shallow in her sincerity and her courage is a performance rather than natural. Nikki is Sara Palin with a southern drawl. All she needs is a wink and the costume will be complete. There is no substance or integrity in her. She will say anything she thinks sounds good to win a vote or a part in Die Amerikanne Seife Oper, "The American Soap Opera."

“During her tenure, she took “old Dixie” down after a white supremacist murdered nine black worshippers at Mother Emanual AME Church after he prayed with them. The decision was heralded in the moment as a brave act. Was it?”---Steve Schmidt

Obviously, it was a was an easy decision. Which is why I always question the MSN when they give praise to people for just doing their jobs and adhering to their oath of office. Pence on J6th, comes to mind.

Or when I question the praise showered upon people like Kelly and Bolton for calling out Trump in their books, years after leaving office. All I have to say to these charlatans is thanks for the warning; I guess it must not have been that important since you waited for the book tour.

That said, we have bigger issues than whether Haley could win the Republican nomination; she can’t. Instead of losing 81%-19%, she close the margin to 80-20%. Congratulations; nice job or as Bush once said: Mission Accomplished!

Worrying still is the fact that Trump is making gains in the Latin community thanks to right-wing billionaire owners of media conglomerates that sell their souls for favorable treatment by the next authoritarian, kleptocratic kakistocracy run by the Mango mafia chief and his demonic minions like Stephen Miller.

Coupled with the three stooges; I mean independent candidates in Kennedy, Stein, West and possibly a fourth in Manchin, and it’s a perfect storm for a Trump takeover of this country.

Be afraid, because it won’t be long before Trump does to this country, what he did for his businesses; send America in bankruptcy. Not to mention, weaponize our law enforcement agencies and military.

Let that sink in.

My odds of a Trump victory

Respect for language wow. But taking pulse of a dozen of the young generation in family (across the country) none of these democrats are interested in Kennedy (“clown”) West (“GTFOH”) or Manchin (“F no”), they don’t pose serious harm to Biden. Granted, strategic focus on voting blocks in specific states, these guys could cause some low margins, but overall, doubtful. But what do I know I thought Hillary would win (despite rampant misogyny).

Expand full comment

Agreed,; however, don’t forget that Biden has lost the young vote in places like MI, WI, PA and Minnesota due to the Israeli/Palestinian conflict which could make a world of difference.

They may not vote for Trump but they may vote for a third party candidate. Unfortunately, the election will come down to four or five swing states and MI and PA are key to a democratic victory.

It’s getting scary!

I am in NYC (Manhattan) and have noticed that since the Israel/Palestine conflict Biden has lost voters (young and older) here too.

Expand full comment

True, but NY isn’t a swing state; at least not yet, but they are a harbinger of bad things to come. I worry about PA and MI; both with large Palestinian and Muslim populations. If either falls, Trump wins.

Expand full comment

Yeah, Palestinians and Muslims are gonna vote for Trump, uh huh

Expand full comment

You missed my point. Of course they aren’t voting for Trump. Instead they’ll stay home or vote third party. Biden only won MI by 150k votes. He can’t afford to lose part of his constituency to even have a chance in the electoral college.

Hopefully everyone, young and old, are smart enough to understand that if they do not vote for Biden (vote for someone else or don’t vote at all) they will elect Trump. If they don’t vote for Biden, they deserve what they get.

As for the current Hamas-Israel debacle, there is no one right way to go. No one right answer. There is blame on all sides.

Michigan? Are you citing the survey that questioned 13 UofM students?

Expand full comment

No, there have been larger polls that show a large percentage of Muslim and Palestinian youth that say they will not vote for Biden or Trump. It’s hurts Biden more than Trump since they weren’t going to vote for him to begin with.

We’re still a year out, but Biden is losing a lot of the constituency he needs to win.

“We’re still a year out”. Yes at this point polls are created to sell media advertising. These polls, please cite

The voters will be choosing between Democracy and Dictatorship. Cite a poll that asks Muslims and Palestinians which they choose

I agree, but depending on where you get your news, a large chunk of Americans wouldn’t know democracy is on the line.

I’ve read several polls over the last few weeks. Here’s one from NBC for MI Muslims.

The only chrystal ball we have will be the primaries. If Trump wins but there is a very low turnout that might be a good indication that Republicans are going to sit this one out. Similarly, and possibly conversely, if Biden crushes those 4 delusional candidates (not a one of them can actually win the general) it means the Dems will turn out to crush Trump. I think the current thinking via polls is skewed by poorly defined questions. Fingers crossed. Was it Churchill that said something to the effect that we always do the wrong thing until we get it right? I think most folks will vote to keep a democracy. I am hoping Biden is keeping his powder dry until he knows whom he really has to go after.

Expand full comment

I agree, but remember Kennedy, Stein and West are running in the general as independents, not in the primary. That’s the issue. Only Phillip’s challenging Biden in the primary.

Steve, I subscribe to you because I like your direct way with words, hearing you destroy Trump with them makes me happy. Why, when it is so clear that Biden will be the Democratic nominee, are you supporting someone other than the one person in a position to save democracy?

You must have missed the blog where he attacked the President for running for reelection and endorsing Dean Phillips.

Expand full comment

I did. Why did he attack him? My understanding is that if Biden weren't running, the incumbent advantage would have shifted to Trump. Plus, Biden has assembled a great team that has been very successful. And that inflation is more closely related to corporate greed than government spending. All I think Biden needs is better marketing and support from his own party. Yes, he is old. Too bad the Dems didn't groom anyone else to be their 2024 nominee, but since we didn't, we have to stick with the nominee we have. And stop the age discrimination!

Probably all of us oldies should get off the stage for the next generation. As soon as they show they ready to govern, we will. Btw, I am so old I protested Spiro T. Agnew. I'm still trying to recover from that evil Reagan presidency.

I agree with what you said 100%. Steve attacked the President on his age. That he should have stepped aside for someone younger and become “an elder statesman”.

A year ago a friend was looking ahead at 2024 and saying what about a moderate like Nikki Haley. I was socked at his naivete. I told him that Haley is not a moderate and not fit to be President. That is what DT has done, though. Exhausted by his extremism they now believe any R candidate not calling for fascism is "reasonable". The bar is now so low for R's, whereas media holds Biden to a much different standard.

In what way is Christie truly owning up to his mistakes? He isn't making any principled stand--that would be Asa Hutchinson to the extent anyone is. Christie is still the thug opportunist he has been his entire professional life. He recognizes a (way) outside possibility to resurrect his political career, and he's making the most of it. "Same as it ever was...same as it ever was..."

Let’s not forget while governor the Bridgegate affair. In his rare commercials here in New Hampshire he brags how he beat the teachers union. I know that is being principled in republican land, but it still irks me.

Giving any of them credit for being principled is like giving Barr credit as well.

So much bait-and-switch when it comes to Christie, including funds for the high-speed rail tunnel he tried to keep after he backed out of the project.

Let’s not forget as part of that is that it put out of work approximately 1700 union construction jobs.

Steve, my man, as usual you have made me think! I do agree with you that Nikki Haley is a cynical opportunist, unfit to hold the office she is so desperately seeking. That said, however, there is no way I could even consider agreeing with you regarding Chris Christie, unless, of course, you saw him as an equally cynical opportunist like Nikki Haley, with a heaping helping of Jersey bully and bloviating ignoramus added. By the way, I do appreciate your having kept your word about not using The Warning as a tool in Dean Phillips’s campaign, but I do have to ask, what the hell were you thinking when you decided that a primary challenge to an incumbent president who is doing the job and doing it well, by someone whose only qualifications for the job are being a rich person, and being willing to sow the seeds of dissention and division in his own party, but hey, Steve, you do you.

As a former repugnantkin like many in this forum I wouldn’t vote for her if she was the only person running, she has had plenty of opportunities to demonstrate a vision for this country and to separate herself from the maggots, she has no vision and the idea of separation from the maggots is an anathema to her. I suppose she is good because like many of her fellow repugnantkins she is sucking up money that might be otherwise be put to more nefarious uses. Which way is the wind blowing? Oh yea that’s how I see it too. Leadership - zilch!

The USA needs to have run off elections. Chile does it and it makes sense that the two top vote getters then run against each other. We got the Bush presidency and his war because of an independent candidate screwing things up.

I agree, Chris Christie is the only reasonable person running. SO I am sure the current GOP will not vote for him

Nikki Haley surface-not-substance, has her finger in the air as she addresses important questions, does and says just enough, a dangerous political operative propped up by the moment in her “woman of color costume.” She’s most definitely auditioning as Trumpler’s veep. It would totally suck for America to have either one of them near the levers of higher office.

If any R other than Christie wins America, she’s over as a democracy.

We need a Bluenami across executive and congressional branches.

BLUENAMI!

I keep making $5 donations to Christie to keep him on that stage. Nothing like a scrappy New Jersey guy to make a principled stand. The rest of the field are worthless, self-promoting, I-want-this-no-matter-what-I-must-sacrifice weasels. It's looking bleak on that side for a long time to come.

"Power does what it wants" is a maxim that is always true. The questions Americans ask are all answered in that maxim. Questions , like "why this? Why is that happening", How could it be so">? and all such confusion in the americans' minds can be answered if anyone would read "Democracy in Chains" by MacLean. She names the oligarchs, their groups, and their powers. They have controlled us since 1820 and she proves it. WHO IS THE POWER THAT CONTROLS US?...That book, "Democracy in Chains" , I hate to say, is the sole and only book out there which reveals their names, and their ACRONYMS for their cabals,..These devils are shape shifters who can hide like an indigent in the in their own native forest, eluding green berets or all the USA goevrment.

They can do that because THEY CONTROL the inner structures of government and they are not to be confused with a conspiracy theory.. They are NOT THE DEEP STATE. They ARE the state. They hide their tracks, and yet ought to be Highly Visible, because they are all Fabulously Weathy individuals and groups. They know how to hide, and never want to be seen. Only MacLean has shown us who they are. She was threatened with death immediately after her book was published in 2017, and she has been vaporized by the media.
