I'm not sure where to write this, but it must be said, that the ABC moderators of the debate did a good job of asking pertinent questions, keeping it short, and quickly fact-checking wild claims. When trump claims that they are biased because they did not fact-check Harris.... there is a valid reason for that: SHE WASN'T LYING AND MAKING RIDICULOUS CLAIMS THAT NEEDED FACT-CHECKING. In fact, the moderators were the best in any recent debate I've heard.

They could have done a lot more fact checking trump. Apparently he lied over 30 times. So it was just a tiny fraction of his lies that got fact checked. As for Harris? I’m sure she exaggerated and maybe a few white lies, but it not the moderates fault that whenever trump opens his mouth a flood of lies, violence and hate come pouring out.

From WaPo & other fact checking incl an economist on PBSNewsHour, Harris’s number for what it would cost most Americans in costs with the MAGA tariffs (isn’t it a basic he’d have learned at Wharton??) was possibly higher than it might be. Tho my spouse & I discussed that if we or anyone needs new appliances, it likely would be her number. They didn’t need to fact check her. She’s honest & forthright & ethical. (I’m losing it. Steve Schmidt, send fresh air!)

Re Harris: or a few *mistakes.*

Fox has been busy trashing the moderators for fact checking Trump. God forbid journalists would actually fact check anything. Meanwhile the rest of the news media has been busy fact checking Harris to make sure they can somehow appear balanced in this unbalanced weird ecosystem they have helped create.

Expand full comment

Right. TFG is a master at Gish Gallop...throw a bunch of BS out there and if anything, they only have time to fact check the most egregious. Too many times they let complete and utter nonsense spewed from him go.

Expand full comment

Right. I think if the moderators fact checked every Trump lie, and then he had time to rebut, then Harris wouldn't have had time to speak. His "baffle them with bullshit approach" has been a winning strategy for him. He tells far too many lies to call him on all of them.

It might be helpful if Harris could weave word salads in response to Trump - who weaves, and spits out word salads - a lesson for him, and comedy for us.

Expand full comment

Probably the only way MAGA would understand her policies. I think they’ve all given up on English and now only understand work salad. Especially when it’s topped with Russian dressing.

JD Vance scares the hell out of me. And even scarier is that there is a machine behind him (Heritage Foundation, Federalist Society, Peter Thiel) angling to get him to President. My guess is that if Trump wins the election, he'll step down with a pocket of pardons, a billion $ payoff, and Laura Loomer. Then JD gets to "ascend" the throne.

I think that is the plan and it will be over for this country.

Timothy Snyder explained J.D.’s play. “It’s a mortality bet.” J.D. is expecting that Trump either dies or is incapacitated (he already is) to take over.

JD Vance should scare the entire country. If trump wins he is next in line.Trump is old,out of shape. He is more likely than not die in the next 4 years. Either that, or committed to a psychiatric facility for long term care. Maybe throw in a little of the new meds for Alzheimer’s while they’re at it.

It is quite clear what Vance represents. We can thank his voters in Ohio who thought he should represent them, as he simultaneously smears a portion of the population there and calls the elected officials there liars. When people vote this way, this is what we get.

I saw on FB Reels or X, that this guy says that once Trump/Vance win, then the GOP are going to put a ‘25th Amendment’ on Trump and Vance will rise to President, Trump will be pardoned for all his crimes. Seems that Vance, who wrote the Forward to the Project 2025 paper, is part of the Heritage Foundations plan……..Vote BLUE because our lives depend on it

I am 72 years old, and until Trump won the White House in 2016, I never believed it was possible to weaken, let alone topple our democracy. But Trump showed me how wrong that belief was. Trump managed to systematically destroy the faith of tens of millions of our fellow countrymen in virtually every one of our most fundamental institutions, and managed to divide our country to a degree that has not been seen since the Civil War.

Steve Schmidt is one of the few persons out there who truly and deeply understands the existential nature of the threat that is Donald Trump, and who can express that threat in the most visceral yet articulate manner. Just listening to Steve has been an enormous help in managing the terror that I live with knowing that Trump still might win back the White House.

I thank you, Steve, for being who you are and for putting yourself out there unconditionally In our fight to save our democracy and our way of life.

Sadly, there are millions of Americans who support the violence and the hate and the subjugation of women, and will vote accordingly.

Jerky Dimwit Vance dismissed school shootings as a "fact of life." The 2nd attempted assassination of Trump involved an AK 47-like military weapon. I guess we must accept political assassinations as a "fact of life." The right of Americans to keep and bear semi-automaic weapons with bump stocks is no where to be found in the second amendment, but like the border issue, this issue must be kept alive as a manipulative tool for the Maga movement.

The Musk post noted by Steve, "Why do they want to kill Donald Trump? And no one is even trying to assassinate Biden/Kamala," has a parallel in a recent Trump post which simply stated:

“I HATE TAYLOR SWIFT!”

These bottom-feeders know what they are doing and are willing to promote and use violence to achieve their goals, as they have done in the past.

Expand full comment

Agreed. Forbes, not exactly left wing media by ANY definition, quite strongly support TFG and Vance and actually a right wing site and media outlet, reported that the New Hampshire Libertarian Party also tweeted yesterday, "Anyone who murders Kamala Harris an American hero", and then when received backlash, tweeted about 1st amendment rights and complained that X was supposedly a "free speech platform" before eventually removing the tweet. Yes, they definitely know what they're doing and inciting.

The first amendment is moot when what is said is meant to cause harm, correct? Like not yelling fire in a theater. I get that he probably didn’t cross the line but trump, jd, elon all are knowingly close.

And I have been and am worried about Harris. Please let her be safe.

I have just had enough, Steve. Even if Harris wins, it won’t stop. I feel like our institutions have failed, obviously members of Congress, media and in many cases the police. All have failed. This morning I read that a Sheriff in a county in Ohio is asking people to take down the names and addresses of people that have a Harris/Walz sign in their yard. All based on a damn lie.

When I read the reports of yesterday, I realized I didn’t care. Not that I want anything to happen to him, other than jail, but there is so much nonsense, lying and hate out there, it is hard to care about “him/them”.

Having read through the lack of gun laws in Florida, have no idea what they will charge the guy with. He did not fire a shot, gun was legal and what I am reading he was not on private property. So?

I recognize I am feeling the enormity of a mess right now and it will fade (maybe), but I just want it all to go away. I am craving normal.

I miss normalcy and I find that it is a tough fight to prevent it from ruining my health.

Dana Bash was caught flat-footed by his remark that he’d make stuff up. I saw a meme quoting David Sedaris, who said that if you’re still undecided, it’s like having a flight attendant ask you if you want chicken or shit with ground glass on it, and you ask, “How is the chicken is cooked?’

There is also no Secret Service for most of the black, brown, Muslim, Jewish, Palestinian people, poll workers, civil service workers, politicians, judges and family members. Apparently, Donald Trump, his accomplices and those around him who abided it all because they thought they would become irrelevant if they didn’t, thought the violence would flow only one way once they fomented it. Perhaps they thought the old line of grievance “If they can come for me, they’ll come for you too” would only incite Trump supporters. That other crazy people would stay home and wring their hands. Its easy to understand why Trump would think that. A) he is bat shit crazy. B) He has never paid a price for any of his immoral, illegal, actions before. But he is swimming in deeper water now.
