I agree 100% Steve! I was criticized yesterday on Substack for calling demented Trump a narcissistic psychopath! I DO NOT KNOW WHAT EVIDENCE ANY RATIONAL AMERICAN NEEDS TO DETERMINE THAT TRUMP IS INSANE AND NOT FIT FOR ANY OFFICE LET ALONE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES!!!

Unfortunately, three of my siblings are in the MAGA camp, or at least are voting for Trump. The other three of us, and our partners, are vehemently opposed to him, and voted Harris. We live in completely opposite realities. I hope for the best (a Harris win!) but am preparing for the worst (a Civil War).

President Biden has the power under the US Constitution to declare martial law and put down any terrorism initiated by the MAGA crowd! The National Guard and Armed Forces will put down any insurrection and the leaders of the insurrection will be arrested!

I’m not sure about Biden. He is a pacifist at heart when it comes to defending America against trump; he hasn’t demonstrated in the strongest terms how he would act if the moron looses this election, save for calling him out with the oft repeated phrase: “it’s unamerican”. He’s left Garland to make his own decisions about pursuing trump and that’s how you got stuck with trump as the Repugnican running for the highest office in the land.

CaroleAnn, the president isn't supposed to get involved with what the DOJ is doing. I think you might have been listening, by accident of course, a bit too much to Trump. It is he that wants to weaponize the DOJ by getting involved in their business. And #2, It's smart and strategic for Biden not to be discussing publicly what specifically he would do regarding either a Trump win or loss. And finally, I am actually quite shocked that 10 readers here have liked your comment. It's made me scratch my head. What do we have here, some deep down MAGA's at some level they don't even realize of themselves?

Last night, I attended a screening of a film, showing the 1/6 Insurrection, made in connection with the UVA Center for Politics. In attendance were Officers Grennell and Hodges, both who testified at the Congressional hearings chaired by Rep. Bennie Thompson. Reliving that day brought tears to many of us in the audience. I spoke to Officer Grennell after the film and the pain that I saw in his eyes will probably never go away. Nor will it for me. We are all on our last nerve as Election Day approaches.

Sharon, I would love to see it! Please tell me when and what time.

January 6th, to me is like 9/11, we should NEVER forget either day! To remind myself of the horrors of 9/11, I watch the programs about that day, every year! And, every year, it brings back the feeling I had on that day, and the days that followed. I do the same on November 22, when JKK was assassinated. I also do the same for January 6th-I never want to forget what Trump put us through! If we don't remember, the horror of those days, they will be forgotten!

If I had children, I would have them view those days too-if not, they might repeat the nightmares that we went through! It is sad that our educational system has watered down our history! Do our children, grandchildren, etc., know what went on during the civil rights period? Do they know how many women lost their lives for the right to vote? So many Americans lost their lives to get the Constitutional right to vote! And they might be taken away from all of us, if Trump wins! Do they know how many lives were lost before Roe/Wade was passed? (They , unfortunately are beginning to see that repeat itself!) Our children have been sheltered from the truth that is our history! Now, they might have to live in an America that will be foreign to us all!

They want to shoot Liz Cheney? That tough woman from Wyoming who is undoubtedly pretty good with guns? Trump is beyond disgusting. We’ll soon find out what kind of country we are- a great country where we pull together in times of danger or another ignorant and destructive power, past its prime.

Concur, Jay. The Senators, Members, states’ legislators & “ordinary” citizens hear all this and just as one came to DC Bec of a lie about a pizza restaurant; they rallied post 2020 election, 1/6, in Michigan, most recently in NC to “hunt down FEMA workers, they are likely to heed the calls. Michael Flynn told them to go to Scranton to rally outside the statehouse. I hope Liz Cheney has greater security. Then will come more lawsuits. This is a cancer not easily banished.

I am worn down. Yesterday walking through Narita airport I overheard a young, white male explaining to his "brown" girlfriend why Kamala is dumb, and that she slept her way to the top. Later that evening at a pub here in California, an unknown couple started talking to us about nothing in particular. Then Joe Biden's name miraculously came up, negatively, I might add. By the time another unknown couple, in the same pub, said matter-of-factually, that there "was no way they would take a poisonous vaccine", I had had it with my silence. I said loud and clear "I believe in science and I'm sure glad that in the 50's my parents took me to get the polio vaccine" and we split. I am so tired of these blithering idiots.

IMO, the vaccine thing is purely a Tragedy of the Commons issue. Folks who don't take it rely on the people who do (and take whatever tiny risk accompanies it) to protect THEM, and they can not take the vaccine but reap the benefits. I have had this discussion before on the Covid vaccine, for example. They say THEY don't need it and THEY will take THEIR chances. I said ok for you, but what about everyone else? What about you, with no mask and full exposure, transmitting it to thousands of people in a chain, and some of them die? What about them? And that's when they expose themselves. They don't give a crap about anyone else. QED.

Tuesday is America’s “Break Glass Moment.” We need, not a marginal win, but an epic blue win to smack fascist GOP back hard, once and for all. This is who he is, but who are we? In 2012, he declared Romney was cheated by Obama (Mitt ran from him), Cruz cheated him when he won 2016 Iowa caucuses (in a scant few weeks, Cruz crawled to him), was oiling up his suck-ups and knuckleheads in 2016, 2020 and, now again, with, “If I lose, they are cheating,” outlook. These people are fucking stupid or fascists. This movie, a replay of Hitler’s rise to power in Germany’s 1930’s. Same exact story but, of course, 80 years later, epically more dangerous.

You could not have captured a more salient and rebarbative truth about Donald Trump, Steve, namely, that his accelerating mental illness of psychopathy features a cruelty that pumps his poisoned blood through a heart of darkness. There are deep psychological reasons for the misbegotten person he turned out to be that emanate from his truncated and damaged childhood, as his clinical psychologist niece Mary Trump excavates here on her Substack: “The End of Empathy” (https://www.marytrump.org?utm_source=navbar&utm_medium=web)

But explanation is not justification. Trump could and should have sought professional psychiatric care decades ago, yet there is no evidence of him having done so. The bottom line is that cruelty is Trump’s primary, overcompensating defense mechanism for never having received the parental love and ‘mirroring’ indispensable to a young child’s development of a capacity for human empathy. As his kindred psychological defenses collapse through a phenomenon psychiatrists call ‘decompensation’, the cruelty appears to be intensifying as a rear-guard measure to forestall ultimate psychological breakdown. Americans need to be warned with flashing red lights of just how his threat to kill Liz Cheney is a metaphorical harbinger of killing thousands, if not millions, and why returning this uncontrolled psychopath to power is existentially perilous for us and the rest of humanity and its civilization.

Wonderful comment. The things is, malignant narcissists, like Trump, don't know that they're ill. Because of their sadism, they actually get pleasure from inflicting pain upon others. I grew up with this, unfortunately, so I know these patterns all too well. My dad could be so unbelievably cruel, and yet I never saw him suffer for his sins, right up until the day he died. It is a profoundly perplexing conundrum, how these people are so deeply loved in their communities, yet behind closed doors can inflict damage so deep that it's literally impossible to put into words.

In the case of Trump, look at what he has done to his children. Don Jr is clearly a rabid addict, and when I see Trump with Tiffany, his loathing of her is so apparent that I find myself looking away when I see the pain in her eyes. It looks like Ivanka may have done okay and who knows about the other sons, but people like Trump sow pain and destruction wherever they go. It's taken decades of therapy for me to bring myself up to zero and live somewhat of a normal life in my remaining years. That's what makes this Trump spectacle all the more tragic for me personally.

Expand full comment

Mary Ann, your personal experience of malignant narcissism is extremely poignant and doubtless much appreciated for enlightening us here and beyond, I am deeply sorry for the pain you have suffered but grateful for your narrative and the warning it portends for America and the world should this deeply psychologically disturbed miscreant wield power once more. May a Kamala victory further help to salve the remnants of those personal wounds.

Donald is a coward. Liz Cheney has more integrity and honor in her pinky than Donald has in his whole body. Bravery is a quality Donald Trump knows nothing about. He doesn't understand why certain people stand tall and go to war and face the brutality of the battlefield. Donald was given a chance to honor his citizenship and got a case of bone spurs that kept him from fulfilling his duty, however those bone spurs never kept him from the golf course or tennis courts. There is no honor in bone spurs or in Donald J Trump. He should keep his mouth shut and keep Liz Cheney's name out of his mouth. Liz Cheney is an honorable person and a great patriot, Period.
