Brilliant piece as has been your last 10 warnings. Keeping my fingers crossed for tomorrow and offering my prayers that we live up to the ideals upon which this country was founded. We cannot let hate and division win …not tomorrow……not ever! Thank you Steve .

It is fitting for this fascist movement is led by a draft dodger. However it is unfortunate that many of his supporters are veterans. I do not understand why they have fallen victim to the Queens hustler's lies. I believe they are good men and women but don't understand why they would betray everything their fathers, mothers and grandparents sacrificed to give them the rights to abandon their form of government. I believe the corruption of the television media has made it easier for corruption. We once read books which expanded our universe. Now books are banned because of words written that do not confirm their narrow views.

My generation saw the moon was reachable but we didn't know how to mend the broken dreams left by those who fought the war. The seventies were full of corruption and lost opportunities to mend our nation. We were forever divided by events and refusal to to hold a President accountable. Maybe that was our biggest mistake because before that day we believed in nobody was above the law. Today we have the Police Unions putting their support on a convicted criminal and that criminal has a good chance at becoming a President. I hope and pray that day never comes. It will be the ultimate insult to all who have fought in every war and gave their lives so our nation could live free. I think that is what our fathers and Forefathers wanted for themselves and their children and grandchildren.

Thank You ...I believe that Nixon and Clinton were held accountable . In part I think this terrible time we are living through has to do with willfull ignorance on the part of his supporters .. They are delighted when he says terrible violent things .. The police have to be kept in check . They should be given an MMPI test before being hired. And I come from a long line of policeman and nuns and priests. I am happy to say they did nothing to be ashamed of as far as I know. If January 6th didn't discourage his followers I don't know what would.

I am also Catholic with nuns and priest in our family. I was a yearly donor to the Police Officers fund but ever since they backed a convicted criminal I was not going to donate

Police Unions supporting a felon and a person assaulting women makes communities question our safety. This makes no sense.

You, like Tom Paine, became a self appointed flag-bearer of your generation, by resisting Trump’s Fascism, putting yourself in the crosshairs of the most powerful and dangerous man from day one of his disastrous presidency. It is only fitting that we are eagerly deciphering your prophecy as best as we could on this momentous eve of our young democracy’s tumultuous struggle to survive. You are epic and we see your high integrity and powerful determination. We are proud to call ourselves your fellow citizens. Hope many of us hear your clarion call for action to save our republic. Long live USA!!!

May, thank you for putting into words what I was feeling while reading The Warning today!

Wasn’t Paine exiled for writing ‘Age of Reason’? But he came back.

Expand full comment

He was exiled because of his strong support for and belief in the ideals of the French Revolution, his strong criticism of Federalist leaders, and Deism, which was about as close to atheism as one could be in those times. He left England and went to revolutionary France where he was caught up in the machinery of the Reign of Terror and spent time in a French prison wondering when he would be guillotined. I believe he escaped, went to England and returned to U.S. in 1802. A truly great man, far ahead of his times.

My old town in New Jersey has statue of Thomas Paine. I remember it well and saw it often. The base of it states simply: Father of the American Revolution.

We can and will defeat the terrible movement of these ungrateful, unamerican supporters of Fascst Trump tomorrow. We have to….

“Donald Trump is a dime-store Mussolini, a thug, and an ignorant bully whose only creation is a cancer called MAGA that is the threat to what the founders foresaw.”

Steve, very inspiring, and please feel free to tell us how you really feel! Trump is all these things, and the reason he, and MAGA will be finally relegated to the dustbin of history for what they truly are: LOSERS!

You can call them by any other name: fascist, racists, perennial grifters, or the clinically insane. However, in the end, they are still the same LOSERS they always were, and the reason justice and morality will prevail.

That said, we will fight, we will press on, and we will ultimately persevere. And in the end, this plight and plague that has infected part of the American consciousness will be eradicated; until our next date with destiny. Let’s just hope that day never comes!…:)

Great job! I stand in step with you and look forward to your inspirational messages after. May Kamala and the democrats in the house snd senate win and with a large majority reinstall and reinforce the guardrails as they were intended in the formation of this nation. Perhaps we will be able to repair the damage done to our Supreme Court and as a nation come together to reject their partisanship. Finally, in the event things turn ugly, I pray for Biden to have the courage in his last days to use his presidency and its recently appointed immunity to save our democracy in any and every way imaginable .

At least I don't feel isolated and alone with my thoughts and perspectives. Every time I admit that I am cautiously optimistic, someone reminds me of 2016. OK - with 2016 in my rear view mirror, I remain cautiously optimistic because I have faith that more Americans understand the choice, and the consequences from the outcome. It will all be over soon.

I love that you are writing about Thomas Paine. I wish more people knew about him. He moved back to England but I wonder what would have happened if he had stayed here in his new United States. Thank you for all you have written and for all of your commentaries. When we reflect on this election, you can truly say you did your best, there wasn’t anymore you could have done. I hope we are able to secure a win for Kamala and deliver a house and senate to help her. Also, in case things don’t work out, I’m glad you have an adopted country to go to. Somebody has to document this shit. Ha ha! Best wishes and many blessings.

This is one of the best pieces I've read during this whole election cycle. You give me hope in the character of most Americans. Thank you Steve.

Out of many brilliant pieces, this is your best. Inspiring and bracing. Regardless of who wins this election, we Americans will prevail. I just hope we don’t have to hit rock bottom with Trump to realize what we lost.

Are you referring to any specific act that Biden might take in case of a Trump victory? 😉

He’ll take any valid claims for contesting the election to court.

To do anything else would debase our cause and bring us to Trump’s level.

If this country (half of it, anyway) votes for this miscreant, we’ll all have to live with it.
