Steve, every time I read your comments I feel like I am going to puke. They are hitting the nail on the head. I am beyond the phase of grief and outrage. I am appalled that this is happening to my beautiful United Ststes of America!

I have given what money I can, I could give a bit more, would that really help at this point? I will take your advice. As clearly I am beside myself.

I just want to wait until Wednesday ot Thursday to get a sense of who won the elections. I am grateful I live in Massachusetts, yet....

Thank you for keeping us informed. I feel blessed to have you, Rachel Maddow, Nicolle Wallace, Jonathan Capeheart and so many other brave journalists.

Your comment is exactly how I feel as well. I am quite literally sick to my stomach for the last couple of weeks. I live in South Carolina so you add that on for extra agony.

I’ve been donating up until a couple of days ago but keep getting the desperate messages, “We’re DOOMED!” It makes me want to slit my wrists. Since I don’t pray I would feel like a hypocrite now!!!!!

I’m afraid a bolt of lightening will take me out. Things are bad enough already, but heh, it might be a “blessing” in disguise. I may wish it on Wednesday, being dead that is.

The egotistically self-serving DeSantis ad is already being widely castigated as "blasphemy." It's just the latest example of how these pseudo-Christians will do anything in their voracious grasping and strategizing for more and more authoritarian power over other human beings while utterly lacking in real empathy, compassion, loving-kindness, unselfish generosity, and courageous standing up for justice against injustice (many injustices long fomented and/or exacerbated by Republican policies).

These (anti-)religious frauds, who worship the Almighty Dollar (and fetishize the insentient fetus), trample and stomp on everything magnificently exemplified and preached by Jesus and other authentic spiritual leaders from the world's sacred traditions (e.g., Republicans utterly hate Jesus' Social Gospel, as, for instance, expressed in the Beatitudes in the Sermon on the Mount).

But these infidels have the monstrously colossal hubris and audacity to parade and preen as the "righteous" ones. They are blind to the evil karma they're generating, utterly ignorant about "what you sow, you shall reap." We pray for the healing of their toxic heart-minds and true redemption of their souls-- before they have condemned themselves to the hells of selfishness.

Many of us veteran students & teachers of religion and spirituality adhere to the widespread early Christian idea of Apokatastasis, "Universal Salvation" -- an idea also found in other spiritual traditions, holding that Divine Love is all-powerful and will eventually redeem even the most selfishly contracted, rotten, unloving souls, even if it takes aeons. The GOP seems to be sponsoring a competition as to who can become the most connivingly evil-- but i trust in the all-loving Divine ONE to eventually awaken and transform them. Meanwhile, far too many sentient beings will have to suffer their horrifically unjust policies....

You are correct in your assumption that DeSantis and the republican party do not want to unite the country. They know their policies are repulsive to the majority of Americans. Their power comes from the corrupt way they do business. They gerrymander voting districts to hold onto absolute power which eliminates dissent. They use lies and deception wrapped up in the flag to unify their base. They pervert scripture to give themselves an air of religious authority. They are morally bankrupt and no longer wish to govern. Their only goal is to rule over the people with absolute power. Their policies are meant to punish those in society who have no voice because immigrants make an easy target. The Republican Party does not have a vision to better our society. This is why they use cruelty on the less fortunate to feel powerful. The Republican leaders are small minded who value their lives over the rest of civilization.

Patrick, you've succinctly and cogently expressed what many of us have known about the GOP (Greedy Obtuse Plutocrats) since the 1970s. It's always amazing that a large section of the American voting public, evidently some 70 million now, fail to see all this.

Well said, Lee! (btw, i love your self-description about Divine Love).

The only way that the GOP can win most of their elections is by fostering such tragic ignorance, apathy, and resentful ill-will among large swaths of the population-- especially in those regions where an unhealthy "us vs them" tribalism already exists, such as in long underdeveloped rural regions that the GOP has controlled through Big Money encroaching on and owning almost everything in sight. Progressive Democrats have long wanted to help these folks with better broadband access, richer educational opportunities, new business (especially green business) opportunities, renewed & better infrastructure, and of course universal healthcare, etc., but the GOP has stifled almost all attempts and instead manipulated these rural populations to hate "socialist Democrats."

Once again, Steve, no truer words were written. Today I went to a state I do not live in to knock on doors of people who are not my neighbors for a GOTV effort for a democratic senator in a purple state who does not represent me running for re-election in a very close race. I am hear to tell you the polls aren’t telling the whole truth. Women are angry!!!! Registered Republican women are furious over the Dobbs decision. Democratic women are on the front lines ready for battle. Women who have never had to think about abortion are very much thinking about abortion - for their daughters, for their grandchildren, for those whom they knew had to. They’re just not sharing their thoughts with their neighbors at the church picnic. But they told us, one on one, this decision cannot stand. So please, help drive people to the polls, call your local democratic committee chairs - their numbers are listed on your state’s Democratic Party website. Ask if they need volunteers on Election Day. Every single vote matters. Thank you! Remember there are more of us than them.

"DeSantis is an isolated figure. He does not like people, and has a difficult time connecting with them."

Is DeSantis on the autism spectrum? Might that also account for his black-and-white thinking?

Expand full comment

With a quick review of the news, seems there are those who do think he is Aspergers gone bad. If true, a tragedy not just for Floridians, but for all those gifted, brilliant "Aspergens" who go out of their comfort zone to connect with others, try their best to read faces and respond kindly and apprpriately, and who make it a goal to use their intellectual gifts for good.

I've long thought that about the Orange Sadist. Once I wrote that and was lambasted by a father who dearly loves his daughter with Asperger's who was a student at Harvard. He said that she is the sweetest person he has ever known, and I believe him. Having said that, being on the autism spectrum is, unfortunately, NOT protection against having a multitude of Personality Disorders -- just like people who do not have ASD. Thus, the Orange Sadist (my diagnoses): ASD + Malignant Narcissism + extreme Antisocial (Psychopathic) Disorder + Obsessive Compulsive Disorder + Borderline Personality Disorder + Paranoid Personality Disorder -- as well as some biologic, psychiatric disorders including: ADHD, with associated learning disorder + possible (untreated, needless to say) Bipolar Disorder, with primarily hypomanic features, but occasional manic episodes. That's enough for now. I am unfamiliar with deDevilist so don't know what insanity he may be dealing with, but the concept of ASD is interesting. Also, certainly Sociopathic and Narcissitic. [Think of the gigantic abyss in treatment of fellow human beings between those two men, and Presidents Biden and Obama!!!]

Thanks! I practiced Psychiatry for over 30 years, so I'm pretty good at diagnosing people. The Orange Sadist would never in a million years come for help. We have a saying that it's the HEALTHY people in a family who seek help. The really sick ones say that they are fine, and the problem is with everyone else. (Sound familiar? The O.S. to a T.)

That ad is the creepiest thing I have ever seen. It made my skin crawl.

For this man, and his wife, to suggest that the horrible things he is doing are somehow ordained by God is an absolute abomination and propagandist rhetoric of the most vile and dangerous kind.

DeSantis and others of his fascist ilk must be stopped.

“It raises a question. How should we think about an organized conspiracy of corrupt extremists who practice cruelty as a vocation? Should they be accommodated, or confronted? Should they be given more power? Should they be rebuked? Should they be fired from positions of responsibility?” ~ Confront, Rebuke, Fire! We have the vote now. How else this could be accomplished remains to be seen should they gain power.

Let us not forgot De Santis's latest dirty trick; to convince ex-cons (blacks only) to vote and than arrest them when they do.This is not only to scare black people from voting but also to "proof" that there is real voter fraud. This is another one of his sadistic, racist schemes. The GOP can only win by

fear mongering and lying about crime and the economy. Unfortunately Biden seemed unwilling to talk about the fact that the economy is strong and violent crime is much worse in the red states than the blue states. We have a much lower inflation rate than Europe and the rest of the world. Ofcourse people are hurting but now it is mostly due to price gouging. I believe that this is done on purpose not just for profit but to make the dems look bad. Big business wants the GOP to win so they get another tax cut and do away with regulations. MBS in Saudi Arabia loves Trump not Biden.
