That's one demented-ass speech. Thanks, Steve - I had been unable to find the full text in translation anywhere before now, and I'd looked all over the place.

If anyone has been in denial that the GOP is full-on unapologetic fascist, let Orban's invitation to address CPAC on American soil serve as your tipping point.

Steve, I hope it is you who history remembers and not the Orbans of this world. You shine the light of truth on the darkness of their lies. Thank you and keep the flame of Freedom shining bright.

there can't be enough history taught for those of us who don't have this detail, so thanks. No chance demented and disinterested Republicans pay no heed to the past only to what might work in the moment. Orban? Good grief when did this connection take route and why are the stand back Republicans putting up with this nonsense - does Orban bring money with him, that seems often to be the nut that makes things work for Republicans? This is revolting, SCHLAPP!!!

Let's step up to the plate and share this distillation history, of truth and terror, THE WARNING, that Steve is posting. (Thanks)

Absolutely. Post WWI Germany. Hitlers rise to power same story here. Seize on dissatisfaction, manipulate the truth, eliminate free speech, divide and conquer, elevate the fringe lunatics to power. Stand behind the oppression, admire your handiwork.

Round two began in 2016 and failed J6 but was not ELIMINATED (huge mistake).

They will try again and again until the rule of law hits back hard and swiftly, let’s hope 2024 is their “bunker moment” and not an opportunity for Round 3.

I’ve watched Orban for years now. I am Austrian by birth and have visited my mother and stayed with her frequently before her death in 2015. Orban started his anti-democratic policies very slowly with punishing one or two journalists, then banning a newspaper here and there. Now I just keep wondering when the EU will sanction him, or, what would be preferable to me (fat chance!) throw him out of the EU altogether. He certainly stands against everything the EU stands for. How can he be part of a bloc that is categorically opposed to everything he does?

We don't need to look to Orban to see his anti-democratic policies. The Ecclesiastical Court of the United States has replaced the fka The United States Supreme Court. The five RC judges represent the fascist leanings of the Church a hundred years ago.

Where is the likes of the Lincoln Project now??? to counter this poisonous nationalism!

We need to fight this propaganda war NOW! it is a nothing less than a cognitive virus.

we need to take action now, pull together talented folks, and ACTIVELY FIGHT THIS PROPAGANDA WAR BEFORE MORE MINDS GET INFECTED WITH ORBANISM.

Steve, you are doing a great service with the Warning, but we need to organize a massive coherent narrative to fight this. We need to do more than just comment on this poison.

this is a battle for the minds of Americans, and in difficult times like this, people regress to selfish protective positions. we need to organize coherent narrative to fight this, use smart psychology and visual and verbal means to prevent the banality of evil that Hannah Arendt described.

Pluralism. What always strikes me when the likes of Orban, DeSantis, Thomas,Trump open their mouths to explain how much they despise pluralism, by acting upon it building walls and segregating thought, is the lack of mindful, pluralistic knowledge they have. Orban does not see the other side of the coin. Every point he picks against his communist opponent could well be the same were he the communist Orban dissecting the conservative Orban. And how he picks his pop culture messengers, HBO and Sting! And refugees too (sure he welcomes Ukrainians into Hungary, with his open arms and big heart! and some sort of screening at the entrance, if you know what I mean). He should not set foot in America, is all I say, the sort of screening at the borders of Our country. Persona non grata.

I find the fact that Orban is coming to CPAC extremely disgusting. He is a special kind of evil just like Putin.

The most eye-opening thing in that speech was Hitler's support of the Roman republic over Carthage. Did he think it through?

Expand full comment

Well, Rome did sack Carthage in the 2nd century, but fell to the Northern “barbarians” in 476 when the last Roman emperor was deposed.
