The last week has been unlike I've ever seen in politics in my 65 years. I don't remember Kennedy. The exuberance and sheer joy of Vice President Harris is remarkable. It's no time to let up. Let's ride this wave into November and then the White House.

Her energy is so fresh and clean, she radiates not only competence but goodness and wellbeing.

I do remember Kennedy, because I turned 14 the year he launched his campaign, and my parents were political junkies so we watched Cronkite every single night. :) I sense Harris's resemblance with Kennedy and also with Obama.

I remember Kennedy well. I was in college, under 21, and couldn’t vote. But I was captivated by the campaign and followed it closely. I never forgot it: the energy and hope it brought. I sense some of that with Kamala.

Agreed! And the legends of groups getting their zoom calls, mass meetings and even those that are smaller have all ‘gotten the assignment’. Thought the Obama Blue wave was huge with enthusiasm but this Harris campaign is becoming a Tsunami!

What now still seems to be a tight race could, with explosive enthusiasm and hope, transform the election into a Democratic rout of Republican fascism.

At 12-years-old, my politically active Democratic uncle, who knew then House Speaker John McCormack, as well as the Kennedy family, took me by train to the Nation’s Capital for JFK’s funeral. The triumvirate of events I witnessed and participated in -- standing curbside as the assassinated president’s funeral cortege bearing his body on a horse-drawn caisson solemnly passed by, filing past his flag-draped coffin in the Capitol Rotunda, and finally, visiting his freshly-covered grave illuminated by the Eternal Flame atop Arlington National Cemetery -- have left indelible memories freighted with both sadness and hope. Within five years, two other national icons of moral justice and passionate idealism -- Martin Luther King, Jr. and the president’s brother, Robert F. Kennedy, would similarly perish from assassins’ bullets.

And yet, ironically, the hope that survived those national traumas has persisted and become indomitable because the spirit of goodness eventually triumphs over evil, as it will again in the face of the mass psychotic delusion of Trump MAGA fascism. May Kamala carry the torch into November and beyond!

Much of that Kennedy-inspired, patriotic optimism is now in the national air. I can’t wait for Kamalot!

I remember when Bobby was shot. I remember our teacher telling us he had passed. It still brings tears to my eyes even today.

“Some men see things as they are and say why, I dream things that never were and say, why not”. - Robert Kennedy from George Bernard Shaw

It is my deepest hope that Kamala Harris rides the giddy optimism of the first week of the campaign into the convention, through to November and then the White House.

Much obliged, Shirley. I believe that it's important to share experiences that appear to have significant continuity and connection with current states of affairs, for historical, moral and practical political action-related reasons.

I remember the Kennedy/Nixon campaign. The debate with Nixon’s sweaty lip. I remember my Sunday School teacher had a pin that said, if I remember correctly, “ I’m With Pat”. It was a fierce fight, but still respectful. Nothing like now. Trump has lowered the bar. It is an exciting time for sure. And the Convention is on it’s way!

Criminally insane convicted felon dump will contest the election results no matter how big Harris’s landslide is. He will push it to the Supreme Court, and the shameless six will declare him the winner. The only way that’s not going to happen is if we add four justices to the Supreme Court right now.

Expand full comment

It's a waste of energy to think there will be additions to SCOTFG in the next 3 months. Focus on what we can control and help get more people registered and provide the info they need to overcome the misinformation MAGA will inundate them with. This isn't practical and doesn't fix the long term problem and will actually cost Harris and the Ds votes. Not a smart move to do this.

Biden sadly is an institutionalist oblivious to the danger MAGA represents....he has been presented with the concept of adding judges...and SCOTUS HAS fluctuated in number over the course of American history....but he like the other octagenerian Nancy Pelosi says...NO. even to save the republic these loser Democrats never think boldly.

I fear none of this matters. Harris could win every state, but the red state votes won't be certified. It will then go to SCOTUS where it will get tossed to the House, and each state gets one vote. Trump wins. He keeps saying as much when he tells his side they don't even have to bother to vote. This is the Heritage Foundation's wet dream.

Expand full comment

Steve, this is where your attention should be paid going forward. This needs to be a landslide so that none of this can make any headway. They do have a plan, and that plan is maga election official plants in many of the swing states.

Very scary. Their plan is to try to steal the election, not to win it.

You say Palm Beach, I’m hoping it’ll be free room & board in a Federal slammer, and preferably not one of the country clubs (his crimes demand maximum security). In any case, the notion of his being taken down by a MIXED RACE WOMAN BORN OF IMMIGRANT PARENTS is so delicious it’s fattening.

It is certainly encouraging and she is clearly the vastly better option and the most effective counterforce to the various authoritarian and kleptocratic initiatives seeking to diminish democratic process and popular will. But let’s reflect on where overconfidence for team maga got them. And let’s be attentive to whatever electoral shenanigans they may be working on ahead of 1/6/25.

Trump and the GOP have spent the last 4 years rigging the election in swing states and Republican ones. They fully intend to throw this election, through the electoral college, into chaos and TO THE SUPREME COURT. You KNOW how that will end, don't you? Where is the federal government security agencies? How, will they protect this election? The GOP knows they can't win, listen to Trump, he knows he can't take the White House with votes, that not what they're planning. What is our government going to do to protect us when so much of it is made up of Republicans!?

President Biden will declare martial law and order the U.S. military to put down the insurrection with deadly force if necessary. My cousin won the silver star for taking on 90 Iraqi T72 battle tanks at Khafgi Saudi Arabia in the middle of the night with just jeeps with Tow missiles on the back of the jeeps. He told me he was vastly outgunned until the A-10 warthogs Air Force planes showed up and 30 minutes later all 90 tanks were destroyed. I suggest a run of the Warthogs next to the Pillsbury doughboy insurrectionists and let them see the power of the depleted uranium Gatling gun in the nose of the aircraft. They will surrender just as the Iraqi tank crewman did rather than be destroyed by the Warthogs! Time to take out the Trump trash forever!!!

We're in this current predicament because J-6 was not handled as an insurrection. This time around we must be prepared, as you say, and bring the hammer down as needed.

I like the hopium but...whoa! KH is off to a great START but she must continue to hit all of the right buttons if she is to stay one step in front of Trump. The Dems must have a plan for countering the inevitable blizzard of b.s. that is soon to be heading Kamalas way. Being out in front of those attacks may be the key to her potential success.

This is especially important as Trump has denounced any affiliation with project 2025 and Dans, the director of the project has resigned. But most sane people know full well that Project 2025 and 47’s proposed policies are closely aligned. And who can trust anything that Trump says? As a born liar, he has proven time and again that nothing he says can be relied on, and his apparent rejection of Project 2025 is no different.

Meanwhile Trump is truly sounding like he has lost his mind.On "Truth Social" he posted a photo of FBI Director Wray pointing at him with the caption:

“WHAT DID YOU KNOW AND WHEN DID YOU KNOW ABOUT IT? RETRUTH IF YOU WANT TO KNOW WHO ORDERED THE ASSASSINATION OF DONALD J TRUMP.”

He is suggesting that the attempt on his life was part of an FBI conspiracy.

In another resurfaced video, Vance seems crazier than Trump as he harps on his ludicrous attacks on childless couples: "Final point I’ll make is you go on Twitter, and almost always, the people who are most deranged and most psychotic are people who don’t have kids at all.” – J.D. Vance

No wonder many in the GOP are calling on him to step down. What a shit-show!

The Coup de grace could be Harris taking a page out of President Lincoln's "A Team of Rivals", and name either Cheney, or Kinzinger as VP. Of course, this won't happen, but it would be pure genius if it did. Just saying...

Daniel Pink's idea in this WAPO article is fantastic. After Harris chooses a running mate, Mr. Pink suggests that she announce her cabinet and other high level agency choices and run with the slogan, "Tgether We Can Do It," as a foil to Trump's, "I Alone Can Fix It," "I am the Chosen One," and "I Had God On My Side," referring to the assassination attempt. Brilliant!

Thanks Ron.

Expand full comment

You're welcome. I agree!

Expand full comment

"Pure genius"? More like pure ignorance. Name one or both to cabinet posts if necessary if she wins. Cheney voted with TFG 95% of the time and was a 3 term Rep in a solid red state. Not sure about Kinzinger's voting record. Look, I appreciate what both said and did around J6, but that doesn't qualify them. We need our people, our policies, and our platform.

And neither one of them has anywhere near the experience to be VP. As I said the last time this happens, you'll lose a lot of democratic support and give TFG's campaign and MAGA world all the ammo they need to stop the Harris momentum. "See? The democrats know their policies are so bad they decided to put a Republican on their ticket. Vote for us and get the full R policy agenda." Even though that would be bullshit, enough people would hear it and agree. Stop the silliness please.

If I was advising Harris, I wouldn’t be able to recommend anyone more highly than Sec. Pete B. Also, another unlikely outcome.

Expand full comment

So, I have a lot of respect for Pete B, but he's even less qualified (based on experience) than Cheney or Kinzinger. What you're saying without saying it is our democratic policies and field of candidates from democratic state governorships and Senators is so pathetically weak or thin that we need to go with a republican. Not your intention, but effectively what you're saying. That's quitting on our party and America. Not our job to fix all the problems TFG caused and continues to do so by appeasing some small ass group of voters.

Expand full comment

Ever read “A Team of Rivals”, about President Lincoln’s VP and cabinet picks? It’s a Hail Mary to be sure, but it worked.

Expand full comment

Never read it but am familiar with it just the same. FYI, this isn't 1860, so only when white men could vote. That's what you want to base this insanity on? Different world, different news sources and speed (instantaneous instead of days or weeks), different political parties. That is a sure fire way to lose now. It's not on Harris or the democrats job to appease the fucking idiots who pledge loyalty to TFG instead of the Constitution or to undo all the damage in what you perceive as unity. Neither one of them is qualified nor has the policy bonafides to be the D VP. Cabinet members is a possibility. You admit it's never going to happen, yet post this every day. Seriously, WTF. Glad you're not advising Harris.
