But Schmidt, by posting on Substack, is committed to journalistic standards, and failed miserably at vetting what he re-posted. Several of us called him out. He has failed to respond, and each day that passes he buries himself deeper. A failure of this dimension affects how I will inevitably hold anything else he has to say. Ultimately, I'll disenroll, but I'll stay until I see how he handles this serious misstep.

The longer he delays addressing it, the quicker the standard he ignored impales him. I'm not going to try to define in advance what an effective response might have to be. I do trust my own sense of what will be right and what wrong in this instance. I recognized the need to respond instantly I read his post, and feel just as confident I'll know what to do relative to his response or lack thereof by, shall we say, Tuesday next (8/4). Justice Potter's observation relative to obscenity comes to mind; I'll know if it's a proper apology when I see it. (I will say this, though. He might want to consult his attorney before he completes and posts what he has to say about this unfortunate episode.)

I am reading Doug Brinkley and Townsend Hoopes' book "FDR and The Creation of the U.N." which explains how Roosevelt was planning for a United Nations that could abort war during WW2. It reminds me of how optimistic many were even in the shadow of the atomic bomb when the U.N. was created in San Francisco and moved into its new home in NYC. The devastation of war and the assurance of great leadership was then fresh in Americans' minds as it was not when 77 million voted to make Donald Trump their president in 2023. And the entire world must now pay for that epic blunder as it did for the ego and racism of one other mad demagogue.
