HEY MAGA!!! Is this what you had in mind? I don't think so. You gave us Trump. You say," How silly. He doesn't mean it." I say to you, "Watch out! He's about to pick your pockets! And your grandkids pockets! Hell, you'll be lucky if you end up with a t-shirt on your back!" Just a tip-off from one American to another.

The Canadian thing is an unfortunate distraction and a mess of our own making. I take responsibility for it because 77 million of my countrymen created this distraction by who they elected. And that to me is the crux of things. I assume Canada does a better job than we do when it comes to the health of Canadian women.

And that is another thing about who we elect these days. Women’s health is very important and one might think that having a female Governor would help with that, right? Wrong. Here are four female Governors:

Kay Ivey, Alabama.

Sarah Huckabee-Sanders, Arkansas.

Kim Reynolds, Iowa.

Kristi Noem, South Dakota.

Each of these states has some of the most medieval laws on the books as it relates to women and their health and well-being. And these laws either have the support of the above Governors, or are laws that each of these Governors signed.

Unless we stop electing people like this, we will keep going backwards. I would say the women and doctors dealing with miscarriages in these four states do so in fear of punishment.

John D. Thank you for your response. Alas, you might see this as a distraction, but I see it as a direct threat to the autonomy of my country. And Trump is an insulting, abhorrent a$$ who is attempting to stir the pot of the world order, and not just my country. For the life of me, I can’t understand how a Supreme Court Justice could even think of administering the oath of office to such an imbecilic individual, hell bent on destroying the goodwill of a people on whom your country has relied upon for years.

Yes, distraction is the wrong word. I would rather say abomination — which is closer to the threat at hand, but may not even be sufficient. I am an old English major who finds himself running out of words.

Aren’t we all running out of descriptive adjectives to assign to the orange moron. At least I have a 2nd language that I can use for additional descriptors.

Hey CAM, I posted another comment speculating that this might be a distraction, but in no way am I minimizing your very valid concerns. It's just I've watched him do the smoke and mirrors, look there while I fuck you over here, so much it makes me wonder.

CAM, encourage your country to speak out against Maga threats and insults. Mexico's President Sheinbaum did a beautiful job of putting our arrogant, thoughtless, narcissistic president-elect in his place with a touch of humor. I love it because I'm sure Trump is seething over the nerve of President Sheinbaum to best him at his own game and make him look like the petty fool he is:

"Mexico’s president rejected several of President-elect Donald J. Trump’s assertions about her country and even joked that the United States should be called “Mexican America” after Mr. Trump said the Gulf of Mexico should be renamed the Gulf of America.

President Claudia Sheinbaum of Mexico used her Wednesday morning news conference to show a world map dating from 1607. The map labeled North America as Mexican America and already identified the Gulf of Mexico as such, 169 years before the United States was founded.

“Why don’t we call it Mexican America? It sounds pretty, no?” Ms. Sheinbaum said while pointing to the map and smiling. In response to Mr. Trump’s comment that Mexico was “essentially run by the cartels,” Ms. Sheinbaum told reporters on Wednesday that, “with all due respect,” the president-elect was ill-informed."

John, you cannot take responsibility for the actions of others. We can obviously be embarrassed by this nonsense, but as we watch fucking asshole Musk now interfering in EU and British politics and offering to throw in over $100M to support positions and candidates he's aligned with, just like he did here with $277M invested in trump, I refuse to accept responsibility for people being elected that I have no control over.

Yes, what you say about these governors is true, but neither one of us cast a single vote for any of them. There are so many causes as have often been discussed at length here. That said, I believe the threat to international policy lies with Elonald Mump and Congress.

I just sent this to my Congresswoman, Mary Gay Scanlon:

Dear Rep Scanlon,

I cannot imagine having the patience nor the stomach to endure directly the language and behavior exhibited by both Republican House Members and the President-Elect. The idiotic threats and bullying are not surprising but will quickly become exhausting. So my first message is I will do my best to support you and our other elected representatives who will stand up and fight against these assaults on our democracy and now, seemingly with a global intent.

My question is, when will someone, (you? Minority Leader Jeffries?) an elected representative, respond publicly to these threats? Is there a plan to wait until January 20 or after? Are there discussions among the Democratic Caucus about the organized counter to this nonsense? What we will, the other 49% of the is country, communicate about this? Is there a plan to oppose and resist?

I have to say, from this side of DC, it looks like we too are capitulating, only we are dong so politely and quietly.

Thank you for your service, now and into this uncertain future.

I look forward to your response.

In solidarity,

Marian

I hope you re-post this article wherever possible, Steve. I very much appreciate reading the speeches by Roosevelt through to Biden, made to the Canadian Parliament. Frankly, I teared up reading them. I'm very fond of Canada and her people; I live in the Detroit Metro area about 15 minutes from the Ambassador Bridge and tunnel to Windsor, Ontario. In fact, our second bridge over the Detroit River, The Gordie Howe International Bridge, will formally open this year, paid for and constructed jointly by our two countries. Gordie Howe was Canadian and played for the Detroit Red Wings for most of his career. He is beloved by both our countries. Due to my proximity to the border, I've been to Canada many times throughout my life, for vacation and weekend trips, and sometimes just to drive through Ontario on our way to New England. The fact that Trump would threaten ANY of our allies, let alone our closest, Canada, is BEYOND DESPICABLE AND INSANE. I will not remain silent about this or any of that pig's threats and incoherent and dangerous ramblings -- not ever!

I am proud of and grateful for our relationship with Canada, and refer to the folks up there as our Canadian Cousins. We are beyond fortunate to have them as neighbors.

At this point I think it is unfair to start asking where Hakeem Jeffries and Chuck Schumer are. They are trying not to bark every time Trump pulls the chain. We can be outraged about everything, but at some point, people stop being appalled, except those of us who are paying close attention. They will fight back if he follows through on his ridiculous proposals. Until then, they have to strategize regarding how to control this lunatic for the next four years.

What our " leaders" haven't figured out is they don''t have to be Pavlov's dog, they can explain to us and spotlight Trump's technique of "Throw the bomb into the store, then rush in and grab all the stuff". That would be helpful to the American people.

I agree with you to a certain extent but I see the international threats as more than barking. Our representatives should be able to figure out some way to make rapid, surgical strikes that can occasionally fill what is now a shocking, silent void.

All of the presidential addresses cited by Steve recognize our close relationship to Canada while respecting their sovereignty. As Eisenhower said, "nothing will corrupt the Canadian-American partnership…" Until Trump, Trump with his blustering, aggressive, nonsensical belittling of our friendly neighbors.

How long will it be before he threatens military action to take over Canada, just as he has threatened Greenland and Panama? His stated motive is the same lie told by his fellow megalomaniac, Putin, to justify his invasion of Ukraine, it is in our national security interests to take over these areas.

The Orange Terror who "hates war" might very well bring about the war to LITERALLY end all wars, since our small-minded, selfish species will no longer be around to wreak havoc.

This is preposterous, and at some point, some of the leaders in the USA and other countries need to question whether a man who turns 79 in a few months is starting to show the signs of early dementia, which afflicted his father at about the same age. If Mr. Trump starts seeing headlines correlating his crazy statements with his age and family history of dementia, perhaps he would shut up.

I'd like to think that they recognize this as a pivotal moment and are strategizing how they respond so that any engagement does NOT create more of a distraction but does push back at the bully (uh, bullies) so that we all are not dragged into continual needless and exhausting battles that prevent our paying attn to the REAL issues and addressing THEM. Could be challenging, because we need to coordinate with Canada, Panama, Greenland/Denmark and other allies. Plus they need to help all of us understand what is just a distraction designed to move our focus off what the orange clan is REALLY up to (in this case, working to rob us of $$$$$$$$$$$$ in order to pay for the huge tax breaks they want to gift (yes GIFT) big corporations and already obscenely wealthy top 1-percenters.

It's not too hard to figure out Trump's techniques:

1. Keep pushing (on anything, no matter how absurd) until someone stops you.

2. The ole' smash and grab = Throw bombs into the store (our public discourse), then rush in to steal all the stuff from the overwhelmed, disoriented store staff (us).

He often works those two techniques together to double his chances of some success. Exactly how to counteract these is the question we need to answer. (I hope we have some engineers, military people, etc. to come up with the answer.)

I am embarrassed for what this country will soon represent, I am in despair as I look for help from among our so-called leaders who could, god help us, save America, but they're too busy cleaning the lint out of their belly buttons or shaking the cotton wool from their brains, and they're no where to be found.
