This is a hollow and feckless gesture and well heeled in Hitlarian politics. Well known and documented among nazi operatives was to deny fascism and the nazi party all while pointing to others that they are the real nazis. The MAGA and current Republican Party has fully embraced Hitlarian ideology. They want to build concentration/deportation camps here for immigrants, demonize them, democrats and lgbt+ people. They are rabid liars, and have turned their back on our allies all over the world all while embracing NATO allies and America’s allies. The act of fascists showing up on that hallowed ground as a criminal. Imagine holocaust deniers Marge 3 toes, Paul Gozar and others like pedophile Matt Gaetz, and pedophile adjacent Gym Jordan poisoning Omaha, and Utah beach, Pointe du Hoc, and the American Cemetery. It is vomit inducing!

Forgot to add…. The republican nominee believes everyone who serves (and has served), those in that cemetery who served the cause of democracy are suckers and losers. The republicans going to Normandy are still nominating him. It is not a stretch to paint these members of congress with the same brush. That they see veterans, including those who perished in war and serve our country and constitution as suckers and losers. They use patriotism; "faux" patriotism like having the biggest possible flag, or wearing a flag as a shirt or hat somehow means they love America. Actually, I always felt that wearing the flag as a garment was the ultimate in disrespect. The flag is not a piece of clothing. It is never to be soiled or touch the ground as I understand flag decorum. I can only conclude that they hold the flag and the lives of those who gave the last measure of devotion to the cause of freedom as worthless and distort what it means to be American and to support and defend the constitution.

The irony of this Republican-controlled Congress traveling to Normandy to commemorate D-Day is too much to bear.

I have a better idea. Stay home and work, pass bills to protect our border and to fund Ukraine in its horrific fight for freedom.

My uncle was killed in action in France a month after D Day. He died to save our democracy. These Republicans are an insult to those who made the ultimate sacrifice. Their fealty to Trump and Putin is a disgrace. Their refusal to support Ukraine is a testament to their ignorance of what so many in Eastern Europe suffered under Russian control. There is nothing too low for them.

I think the hypocrisy of the House GOP‘s visit to Normandy—given their craven failure to protect the US Constitution and the peaceful transfer of power, and Donald Trump’s inference that the people who died there were losers—will greatly overshadow this faux gesture of patriotism, and backfire exponentially.

MAGA in Normandy visiting the graves of American heroes who gave their lives fighting fascism is akin to desecrating those graves! MAGA is the antithesis of what those soldiers stood for.

Steve, when I first read "The enemies of freedom have observed the United States for the last nine years, and have concluded that we are weak and corrupt." near the end of today's post, I took personal offense. But, then I thought about it and you're right - we're "only as strong as our weakest link". The GOP/MAGA are our weakest link. Makes us a target for all the world's bullies! :-(

It’ll be pretty late in the game for Ukraine if that imbecile MAGA speaker Johnson continues to serve as the useful idiot for both Putin and Trump and refuses to put aid to Ukraine up for a vote by then. We need to do so much better than we are in the Republican controlled Congress right now.

The MAGA Christians remind me of a quote from Gandhi: If it weren’t for the Christians I’d be one.

The first sensation that I had when I read this piece was complete and total revulsion. These hypocritical scum bags are going to this supremely hallowed ground to do what, exactly?? Honor these fallen heroes? Did they get permission from Trump to visit these "suckers and losers" (his quotes, not mine). Why would they do something that Der Fuhrer would not do himself?

On another note, perhaps they should all stand there and reflect on why all these brave souls are buried here and in other locations similar. They are there because of the failures of the Western World to contain and emasculate Adolph Hitler when they had the opportunity. The occupation of the Rhineland by German troops in March of 1936 is a prime example. The then purported most powerful army in Europe and perhaps the world was France, They virtually stood by while Hitler did this. We have our modern day version of this in the personage of Vladimir Putin and what is happening in the Ukraine. If the Ukraine falls, you. can rest assured that he will then begin eyeing other areas, like Latvia and Estonia. And if ANYONE thinks this concept is farfetched then you are totally ignorant of history. "America First??" Didn't work too well for us in the 1930's, did it?? PASS FUNDING FOR THE UKRAINE or our men and women will eventually be back in Europe filling more graves.

Another beautiful expression of our heritage. Another spot on description of the dangers and cowardice of the maga cult

This passionate piece by Steve Schmidt serves as the latest (and brilliantly expressed) example of the gargantuan hypocrisy of the GOP and its current leadership in our House and Senate. MJS

Oh my God, what a nauseating piece of theater. The Republican House is chock-full of Nazi lovers, traitors and cowards. Standing on that hollowed blood soaked ground is sickening and done for the show only. Whose sick idea was this? My father, seaman Francis C Butler spent his war years in Guam taking wounded airmen off bombers and fixing machine guns in the planes. Crashed, survived and never stepped on another plane. My Uncle, staff sergeant Charlie Winiki landed on Omaha beach, survived and walked into Paris then on to free Holocaust victims. Never again could he smell a rancid odor again without throwing up. And these slimy cowards are honoring our fallen? Yes, the storm is coming. It won't be pretty.

They have a lot of nerve going there on my dime. Their fearless leader says the fallen are chumps and losers. I want my money back for these wannabes. How fucking dare they. It’s such a wonderful place with our heroes lying there for eternity and these fools will tromp on their memories. How fucking dare they!!!!

Thank you. Today's Republicans should stay at their doubtless grand French hotel, taking a cue from their fuehrer, who could not go to visit the heroes' graves because it rained.

But then, it's just an opportunity to freeload a few days in a country known for its good food and liberal sexual mores. And screw the fallen heroes.

I can clearly see the approaching storm, I have been warning about it for years now, we got a taste of it this last weekend in Israel, not to mention a banquet spread in Ukraine 🇺🇦. I hope the president decides to go to France to honor the fallen, and upstage the insipid clown’s scum who are desperate for any opportunity to make them look like leaders, instead of the trash that they really are. My father and his two brothers were all combat veterans, they served for the duration of WWII, it’s a miracle that none of them died in combat, I know about that because I’m a combat vet myself, it literally is a miracle that I’m typing this today, 6” one way or the other, maybe even a lot less, separated me from the dead whose names are on that wall in Washington. I and my father and his brothers were willing to walk into hell for our brothers in arms. One thing I see with crystalline clarity, is that none of the repugnantkins who travel to France have any business being there. My father and his oldest brother are gone now but the brother in between them is coming up on 104, and he’s as solid as a man half his age, he flew reconnaissance for General Paton in a puddle jumper that was a sitting duck when flying over the German lines, but Paton needed to know how the Germans were arrayed against him. I’m proud of the men in my family who were an inspiration for me and my service, the scum have no business at a national cemetery honoring our fallen brothers in arms.

Excellent piece. Shameless display by those GOP members. Trump nodded off in court this morning and he looked more diminished than ever.
