Steve, your knowledge, gravity, and warning on MSNBC is what we need so much right now. I could feel the close friendship and mutual deep concern for the USA between you and Nicolle Wallace -so humanizing. I first discovered you there years ago and would yell out to others "Hey, come watch, it is this Schmidt guy, he tells it like it is!" Your final message yesterday was perfect. Powerful!

Really nice to hear these two together knowing their mutual backgrounds, I like them both and maggats are our mutual enemies I would love another one!

I left our poll site after being an election inspector for nine hours of early voting. I got in the car and put on MSNBC and I knew it was Steve Schmidt talking with Nicole. Haven’t seen him on there for a long time so it was refreshing. I listen or read his emails everyday and think he’s one of the best and honest journalist I know of. I always say he’s the voice of reason! Thank you Steve for all your support and knowledge and let’s hope Kamala wins.

Steve,

From the very first time I heard you on Deadline:White House, I knew you were the real deal. Your tenacity in telling the ugly truth concerning Trump is shedding light continuously on a country I don’t recognize. Thank you! Your words will not be in vain.

Me too. If I ever had a brother, I would want him to be just like Steve Schmidt.

Expand full comment

Agree! I lost my brothers to MAGA, but found one in Steve Schmidt.

Yep. I lost my sister and all her family. I understand. To be accurate, they were Maga 20 years ago. B4 Trvmp made it famous. So, was only a matter of time.

I’ve lost faith in half the country. A decade of this, continuing yet still, is unforgivable.

I am a dedicated fan of Deadline Whitehouse and saw your interview live. I wished that you had more appearances on Nicolle's show because I am also a dedicated reader of the Warning. I hope there are more citizens who think rationally and choose country over party. However, I am not confident in my hopes becoming reality because half of my family and most of my life long friends are Trump supporters. I live in the Northeast where Democrats usually win elections. I am nervous and have been on edge but now that the election is days away, I am becoming more serene. Not because I feel more confident but because the election will be over soon. If Trump wins, I will survive but I will be less likely to be willing to spend time with my family and friends. I believe in our Constitution and country. I took an oath many years ago to protect it and my willingness to fulfill my oath has not changed. However, if Trump wins, I will blame some people for destroying my faith in our ability to preserve and protect the Constitution. I am not a religious person but I do pray. I have been praying for others to think about our shared experiences and to not throw away our system of government for a would be tyrant. I hope we still have hope after election day.

I have posted on Facebook that I will never forgive Trump supporters for putting us true Americans through such hell. Never.

I feel the same way. What Magats have done, including some members of my own family, in supporting this crude, amoral narcissist is not something I will ever understand or forgive. If he wins, they will rue the day they were fooled by this obvious con man. We will suffer under his brutal tyranny just as they will.

Steve, thanks to you, me too. Not incidentally, you and Nicolle Wallace are two of my best friends I’ve never met. It was great seeing you “together” on Deadline Whitehouse” last night. Thank you for re-emerging on that platform.

Finally last night on the Bill Maher Show, Bill said the things I have been writing about for months.

The economy is booming but most Americans don't know it, neither Harris nor Biden bring it up.

Border crossing is down 40%, unemployment is at 4%, oil prices are down to $ 3 a gallon.

They allow Trump to lie about it and never contradict him so he has been able to convince the public of the opposite. Ask a republican why they vote for Trump and they will say "because of the economy and the border". This is why I disagree with the Harris campaign, you have to respond to the lies and have the guts to call him a liar.

Expand full comment

Those Repulicans you talk to are lying to you and themselves. They are not voting for Trump because of the economy and the border. Or cat eating. Or outpatient sex change surgery in elementary schools. They are voting for Trump out of fear and hate. Fear of the looming majority minority in America and the growing economic power of foreign nations, and hate for the impositions they perceive are being put upon them to accomoate this change. They may not articulate it this way, but this is it. And for them, this is represented by the Democratic Party. So, for example, here in Texas, Ted Cruz is the most hated politician in the state, and it's really not close. He will win anyway, because he's not a Democrat. It's that simple.

So Kamala's message of "We're NOT going back" is close, but is not a direct hit on this. Again, it sounds like an imposition. It would have been more accurate and maybe more persuasive to say "We MUST move forward." In other words, we can't go back. There is no back. There is only forward. And here is the way for all of us. So on that nuance, yeah, they missed that.

My wife and I left Texas almost a year ago for “bluer pastures“ in Sacramento. A state that would reelect Ken Paxton, and probably Ted Cruz over such an outstanding man as Colin Allred is no place for us.

And I agree that Trump supporters referencing the economy and immigration are lying. It’s all about the hate they feel for liberals, Democrats, intellectuals, etc.

Expand full comment

Ken Paxton would be the 2nd most hated politician in TX (followed by Dan Patrick). So with Paxton, well known in TX as the most openly corrupt high-level politician in the country (ahead of Bob Menendez even), lost only 1% compared to the other R candidates in 2022, and even then that 1% went to the Libertarian not the Democrat. That's how immovable this 55% is. With Ted Cruz as his opponent, Allred might lose by only 2-3%. And they'll say look, we're that close to turning TX blue. And they will be wrong again. The problem is the Democrats keep trying this top down approach. It's a systemic issue they can start to fix, but not this way. I can spend another 10 pages on the solution.

Very good analysis.

Expand full comment

I so hope you are wrong about Cruz.

Expand full comment

I hope so too. I will say if Allred wins, it would be an absolute earthquake. Not because the red majority in TX is so huge (we ain't Mississippi), but because it's so inert and because the opposition vote is so repressed outside the urban areas.

Not all republicans are extremists, there are also normal people who only watch Fox and believe everything Trump says. I have talked to some republicans and they are convinced that Biden has destroyed the economy. The Dems never respond to these outrageous lies, the Trump campaign reacts immediately to any criticism.

Expand full comment

I'm not saying they are all extremists. But there is an underlying core of why they find Fox attractive, why they believe everything Trump says, and why they are convinced the economy is destroyed, and that Biden destroyed it. Sure, because Fox says so, but the reason they just accept it is mostly because it fits with the anxiety they feel, and maybe a little because they don't get sufficient rebuttals from Democrats. I don't think a Democratic rebuttal would change much because they are convinced, as you said. What I'm saying is these folks, not believing they are extremist at all, not with malice, sense a fundamental shift in our national makeup, and that America is no longer so much bigger than the rest of the world, and it feels like the Democrats are to blame for this, or at least it feels good to feel like this. And here we are.

My favorite warning is #5. " Freedom is ever only one generation from extinction."

I have once again joined the resistence fervently, after 3 generations! My last time was as a 60's child. I have often tried to convince friends and family that our freedom must be perpetually maintained, to no avail. Hence, after 3 generations of lackadaisical attention, Americans find themselves fighting for their lives against of all things, Nazis. Some of my friends still do not acknowledge this. My grandpa and uncles from WWI and WWII would be exasperated with us. Go, all Dems.

We need a stronger word in the English language to describe a bottom feeder with absolutely no moral compass, like Donald Trump. Perhaps, as time goes by, his name will becoming an adjective to describe such a person, TRUMPIC.

Love Nicolle Wallace, and then to add your wise observations, Steve, was very reassuring. Not sure how the next few days will pan out but hoping that Harris/Walz is a landslide. All the focus has been on the 7 or so states that are swing states, that is for electoral votes but wonder how the other states will lean…excited but also dreading, if it does not end well.
