After reading Prince Harry's book, it's pretty easy to surmise that our mainstream, beltway bubble, access addicted media is every bit a tabloid industry as the British press.

Hi, Is the book worth reading? I was curious. Especially if he gives some insights about how the kind of tabloid journalism works.

Very much worth it. I've yet to figure out why there's such outrage over his book. I didn't find it "scathing". Every memoir I've ever read has been from the perspective of the author & this is no different. His criticism of the press is completely warranted, in my opinion. Outside of that, his journey was fascinating and I enjoyed reading it.

No. My husband is a Dr of Psychology- Meghan has destroyed Harry’s life. She’s what is referred to as a “churner” She churns thru relationships for her own needs. She truly loves no one.

We should not comment on Monarchy. The people chose it, and have a stronger democracy than we do. They could vote them out at any time. They choose not to.

And “born first” is the whole ballgame. Harry was born second.

Expand full comment

She "ruined his life"?

"We should not comment on the monarchy" because the British "chose" it?

I could say many things here, but I'll leave it at "I disagree."

Has Chas ever spoken up to defend his son? I’d be like Harry Truman defending his daughter. The monarchy is what is dysfunctional, not Meghan.

I agree. It is no accident that Charles often chided Harry that he was not really his father is not mentioned by the British Press. Plus, Harry has the fastest selling book, Netflix deals and seems very solid, happy in interviews. He may questions his birthright but what he has experienced gives him the right to turn the false media tabloids on their heads beating them at their own game. Ultimately changing the game with help his neices and nephews who are spares.

that's ridiculous. No one votes on a monarchy, and Harry fell in love.

Is "churner" a technical term that a "Dr of Psychology" would use lol? No it's not. Maybe she's a narcissist, maybe not. I've known many on the Cluster B spectrum, and she doesn't strike me as one. And, oh yeah, we're allowed to comment on whatever we want, we still have a 1st amendment in the US. Finally, the Brits can vote out the monarchy at any time???? Thanks for the laughs Martha.

Doctors who diagnose without ever treating, or even meeting the patient in person, are highly suspect.

What a joke, I agree “ a churner” she’s actually a steadfast loyal and wonderful mother, luckily for Harry! Quite like his mother!

WOW! very different opinions. I'm going to buy the book. Thanks

My need to be informed is outweighed by my need for sanity. I know the extremists are doing stupid, dangerous stuff, but the media focus on people like Boebert is more than I can stand.

The American media is failing in its duty to serve as a spotlight on wrongdoing and corruption. Instead, the American media is only interested in clicks, likes, shares, and dollars. The American media is, in large part, responsible for "President" Trump and the dumbing down of the electorate

The American media pays its bills and stars with revenue from ads and clicks. Duty no longer has anything to do with "free" speech.

Keep these media reviews coming. Yes, Morning Joe may have had it right but I watched as they promoted Trump on dumped on Hillary. Good Lord, now Mica is inviting Hillary to summits in Dubai. Hillary's message hasn't changed but the wind sure has shifted with the people who only care about making money on TV. After everything that was thrown at Hillary Clinton she still won the popular vote. How many time the talking heads said she was a bad candidate. The media coverage pushed that narrative constantly.

I'd love to know from Steve if he can recommend ANY honest media outlets...I haven't seen him on Nicolle Wallace's show for quite some time - not sure if he just chooses not to appear anymore? With fascism rising - it's important to support GOOD journalism - but where?

Expand full comment

I've wondered about this as well, and I wonder if one of the reasons he doesn't appear is because Nicolle is married to Mike Schmidt, Maggie Habberman's journalistic partner. Maybe it's the principle of the situation? Though he appeared on her show while Nicolle and Mike were dating, maybe he opted out? Maybe Nicolle doesn't ask him back anymore? Does Steve appear on any other news shows, or did he just stop doing Nicolle's show? These things I wonder because they are both professionals and always act professionally, so my mind could be wandering in the desert. I have no idea of their interpersonal relationships, but I miss seeing Steve on Nicolle's show.

I was wondering how MSNBC didn't think it a conflict for NW to have Mike Schmidt on yesterday for quite a long time - pitching his book.

They have on everyone with a political book to hawk, so it didn't bother me. What rubbed you the wrong way?

Expand full comment

it didn't rub me the wrong way I am just sensitive to her having to deal with any criticism about the potential conflict - but i'm sure she thought about it before having him on. I was impressed that he actually dressed up - ha!

Dressing up is what I noticed about him too!

She's had multiple people on for extended periods of time discussing their books. He's been a guest on her show since before they were dating, so I don't find it to be a problem. She seems to take pains to not be preferential towards him. You'd never know they're married just by watching the show.

that's eventually the same decision I came to - she's so very good -- and I agree that you'd never know they were married!

Ellen, the system is incestuous.

Jocelyn, BINGO! I think this is a conflict, and a good example of what Steve is talking about. The media/press/gov't/celebrity is a closed loop, and the price of admission to enter the loop is an ability to flow easily back and forth across moral and ethical boundaries.

I avoid Nicole's show anymore. I find she complains a lot about the state of politics without any constructive ideas. Seems different. What a 'tangled web'.

Celeste k., yes, and she has this dismissive, haughty tone, like Chris Hayes and Rachele Madow. She doesn't seem to see the connection between the state of politics and the media issues Steve highlights.

I share you puzzlement. Over the years my admiration for Nicolle Wallace has steadily grown and it was on her show that I first became aware of Steve Schmidt and subsequently became an ardent fan. Agree that both of them are consummate professionals. This troubles me and I'd like to know more.

Steve Schmidt and Michael Schmidt are not related. Michael is a two-time Pulitzer Prize winning journalist and New York Times correspondent. I too was surprised to learn that he is married to Nicolle Wallace, so I googled him and sure enough there it was - she is indeed his spouse. I don't know what his connection is to Habermann, other than the they they both work for the NYT.

For general daily news, what’s wrong with NPR, PBS, and the BBC? The BBC journalists do not nod their heads and accept misinformation from their interviewees. They challenge it quite effectively.

And what about the superb investigative reporting of the Washington Post, New York Times-and even the New Yorker?

Expand full comment

In general, yes. But the NY Times did so much harm to Hillary with their constant email drumbeat. They're big on the bothesidesism. I cancelled my subscription a few years ago.

And I might add, the first half hour of Nicole Wallace Deadline: White House today (1/13) is a critically important discussion. As are many of her shows. I miss Steve’s well-turned golden flow of spot-on insights on that show and others.

Why did I survive intellectually during these years? Because I can distinguish theater from the real. The Camerota interview centered on one issue and one most important one: Should what a President says be held to a higher standard from the rest? Absolutely. Schlapp is pure grievance, BUT it is Shlapp who opened the door to Orban via CPAC. Abominable!

From the above clip of what Michelle Wolf said, it is what is expected from a comedian. Sarah Huckabee was the Donald Trump Administration PRESS SECRETARY. Michelle Wolf was ROASTING. Donald Trump lied. His press secretary lied. Michelle Wolf is a comedian. Camerota was overpowered by two men going at it. Camerota was centered. Cuomo and Schlapp?

A president MUST be held to a higher standard. I remember what is NOT theater. HE SAID THEN: "Look at that face. Would anyone vote for that face?" Carly Fiorina responded the one response that comes thundering down with punity. I THINK EVERY WOMAN IN THE COUNTRY UNDERSTOOD WHAT HE SAID... he whimpily responded the usual lie: "i think she is a beautiful woman," to shield his very flushy, moronic facial snapshot...

Sean Hannity and the SINO are material for Fox News. It is the cry of Viking Triumph, like the horned Insurrectionist with his grotesquely open mouth growling. It is the journalism I respect that must take them down. Now. To stop the man who looked at women like walking pussies; who attacked them to their face with terms like ‘blood coming out of her wherever’ to co-host Megyn Kelly during a Republican Presidential Debate, and did not fail to mock Mika Brzezinski; a man who likes his women's bodies CORRECTED; THE man who now has revived his vicious attacks against those who call out his desecration of America's Constitution and the Rule of Law, and continues to collect words to then spew them out with new meanings like targets, returning the country to the reality of threats against public figures who speak the truth about him and his official enablers in the House. "Abominable" is a weak word to describe a grave moment that will take a moral uprising beyond what women have been doing with much more effect and action.

And we must not confuse gravity with grievance. The comment from Schlapp, the one where it took him a thousand times to review Donald Trump's performance and actorial interpretation of how a disabled person acts. A thousand times to understand! Today, this Schlapp scurrilously hides under his wife's protective skirts from revelations fitted more for pornographic outlets then what should be the news of the day, Leader Hakeem Jeffries enumerating the multiple investigations that George Santos, a Trump-McCarthy man, is undergoing at this moment in time. From the clean side of the floor in the House.

Is there a path we can walk on to solve this issue? I agree this "symbiotic relationship" is a great threat to democracy. How to we break that relationship and steer ourselves back? How do we get our local news back?

Expand full comment

Let me get this straight: a black female comedian outraged conservatives with a bit about Trump, Sanders and abortion, at a private dinner at which she was paid to do….exactly that. That’s not the outrage. The outrage is CNN having Schlapp - a lobbyist! Not a pundit or expert or anything - on not one but two programs just so they can all show outrage. Really? Get your outrage from the left and the right, hot and cold, from a woman and a man, and that’s todays media. The guy who ran CNN at the time created “Trump” while he ran NBC and thought the addled shameless dumbass could read a script well enough ton pay everyone handsomely. At CNN the script is the same, the “actors” are different.

Right now I am just sickened by President Biden's file scandal .

Expand full comment

Me, too. I miss Obama. I didn't agree with several of his policies but he ran a scandal-free and competent administration. The Biden communications team is atrocious. They were caught completely off guard this week and were very defensive in their remarks. Biden's comments about his Corvette were bizarre.

I do agree with Steve's remarks on the network news teams. They seem to stay out of the fray more than the rest of the media. I personally like CBS.

I agree, our media outlets are in disarray and need overhauling. I think the rise of smartphones has made America dumber and more cynical of all media outlets. We are bombarded with fake outrage and real stories are swiftly passed on because it will not bring the same ratings. I have completely given up on our local newspaper. It has lost me as a subscriber because of their lack of interesting coverage or diversity in topics each week. If I wanted the junk in newsprint I would look to grocery store shelves by the cash register for one of the sensational publications. I choose not to name them by name but all know the type of print I am referring to. Smartphones have destroyed the age of newspapers. It is a shame but it was inevitable because people are more interested in likes on social media than they are on actual news. I believe the major news outlets have become lazy and instead of investigating they rely on press releases to fill their pages.

It is a parasitology of codependency that has been simmering, bubbling since the eradication of the Fairness Doctrine, the privatization of media enclaves and the pervasive employment of the firehose of falsehood, unleashed in an unrelenting torrent on the legions of the undiscerning.

Watching that whole Matt Schlapp interview felt like watching him pummel Trump's crotch on tv for 26 minutes. These pundits, cult members, henchmen, not sure what term is fitting because I can't think of one that embodies all the atrocious traits they possess. It's truly horrifying. And there's just no shame. None. How do people get that way?

Spot on. Thank you. I will say that the pearl clutching on the Left fuels the right wing and media craziness. It seems to me the ideology is held hostage by a need to please and a desperate attempt to be morally superior.

Al Franken, Kathy Griffin, Katie Hill etc.

It’s usually a knee jerk reaction that just fuels the media insanity.
