The assault on women’s liberty in America will not stay contained
PLUS: My reaction to NBC's Chuck Todd slamming his own network over controversial hire
Fascism creeps faster, the faster it grows. Like a venomous kudzu vine, it twists around liberty, freedom and individualism, strangling them suddenly and quickly after their envelopment.
Roe v. Wade was overturned just 20 months ago. Already, there is a case that will ban the delivery of mifepristone, a prescription medication most commonly used as part of a two-drug regimen for abortions, through the US Mail under an 1873 law that stands before the US Supreme Court.
Can you imagine a similiar judicial intervention around male health care, the male body, male sexuality, and for the first time in history, an FDA approved drug?
Me either.
When things fall apart, they do so quickly, giving way suddenly. The cascade moves more violently, always faster. Avalanches build, and then they explode before the crash. So it is with fascism. Make no mistake around what it is that is happening.
Christian nationalists know their way around the courtroom. In fact, more than a few preside over them from sea to shining sea.
What is happening in America around abortion rights is a cascade of rulings, laws and legislation that are going to trigger an avalanche of restrictions. They will land with the force of a new iron curtain, descending around vast swaths of America where women live in health care deserts. There will be no providers, no pharmaceuticals, no telemedicine and no healthcare services for hundreds of miles. Of course, like always, this will land on poor women and brutally so. Subjugation is always brutal.
The amazing thing is how quickly this all happened between the repealing of Roe v. Wade and today. It is shocking.
Women in America are being singularly targeted by a legal strategy, and predictably, radical rulings that are removing their agency of their bodies.
Wealthy women will be able to evade the restrictions, but millions will not. Even for the women who are able to maintain personal sovereignty over their bodies, it won’t occur as a right, but rather an economic privilege.
The assault on women’s liberty in America will not stay contained. It will trigger greater ambitions and more hunger for more control over someone else, something else, and ultimately, everything else. That is how it works.
We live in a radical era that is growing more so. Where will it lead? Where will it end?
There is a force that can stop all of this in its tracks. The American people can stop it, and they can stop it in 2024. Let’s send a decisive message.
VIDEO COMMENTARY: My reaction to NBC's Chuck Todd slamming his own network over controversial hire
In case you missed yesterday’s essay about Chuck Todd and Kristen Welker delivering a clear message to the NBC News C-suite, following the hiring of Ronna McDaniel as a paid contributor, here is my reaction to what they had to say. NBC News continues to remain silent on the issue, as additional MSNBC anchors waded into the controversy yesterday.
If the court outlaws the abortion pill, it will be the beginning of the end for abortion in America.
And agreed, it will only affect the millions of women living paycheck to paycheck in this country who have no options or money to go to blue states or abroad. And the way the court is ruling, even blue states are in grave danger.
This election may be the last chance to stop this fascist court. If Trump wins and republicans retake the senate, both Alito and Thomas will resign to make sure the next 40 years is under theocratic rule by the Christian Taliban.
And republicans will replace more than 200 federal judges, controlling almost every circuit court in the nation.
Presidents come and go, the real power lies with the people who aren’t elected, yet serve for life; federal judges! And we all now know that the conservative judges are bought and paid for by right wing billionaires and conservative interest groups; willing to do their bidding for a Winnebago or $500k vacation.
Let that sink in!…:)
You are correct about the Christian nationalist agenda. They are coming for your freedom, the freedom to choose. I am not just talking about abortion or birth control. I am taking about the freedom to make decisions without the deep state or the church looking over your shoulder in and out of the bedroom. Freedom of choice is the American dream. It is what our democracy was built on. The freedom to choose your leaders and the freedom to live in a country free of suppression of thought. The country has spoken more than 150 years ago about the bondage of slavery and again more than 50 years ago that all men and women are equal in the eyes of God and under our Constitution. Now one political party, The Republican party, wants to rewrite history to their advantage. They feel threatened because their warped perception of reality has made them angry. However, they have no consensus of what they are angry about, just that they are not to blame. They whine about this and that and how things used to be so easy. I don't know about anyone but myself but I do not want to go backwards or even if I could just stand still. I believe destiny lies ahead of everyone not behind them. Yes, I too long for simpler times but in reality, they never existed. Life is like the tides, they ebb and flow. If there were no tides the oceans would die. If you try to go backwards or stand still to feel safe life will run you over and pass you by. The American dream in my opinion is only possible if you have freedom of thought and the freedom to choose, without those basic freedoms there is no liberty.
