There are never...I repeat....never...too many stories like this. This personalizes what being an American....actually what being a human being....should mean. It is in individual acts of standing up that anyone makes a difference. I cannot imagine the moral core that grounded this man's decision...and yet, he made his stand. In this end of the year, I am thankful that you have brought this man into my life. There are still heroes. And never too late to learn about them.

The best part of the heros Steve recalls for us is that it motivates me to fight against the evil that threatens our democracy. In the daily load of corruption we face I could so easily slide

Into despair. To know of the heroics of those who kept democracy alive I know that I can do my part however insignificant it may seem to get out the vote and try to inspire others to be part of Team Democracy.

Thank you for being relentless, Steve! Thank you also for so many insights and inspiring stories over the past year. For the upcoming year, surely to be a tumultuous one, when our Constitution and Republic will be at stake, we must all strive to be Master Sergeant Roderick Edmonds!!

Thank you Steve for this message. My mother was liberated from Auschwitz, her family was murdered by the Nazis. She rarely spoke of her time there except for telling us that Nazi guards forced children to see the smoke from the crematorium, the guards saying “ those are what’s left of your parents.”

I heard it be said about Jewish people that “ every generation they come for us.” I’m thankful that she has passed and not having to relive her nightmare.

A wonderful story of bravery and great character and an apt counterpoint to the descending rhetoric of a madman, embraced by far too many and none for any good reason. Trump must be called out night and day for the Sociopath he is and the danger, not unlike a nuclear bomb, to the United States. So many, especially in the media treat this as a horse race instead of calling it what it is, GOOD vs EVIL. It is that simple and we can only hope that the Justice system, moving like a snail, will finally catch up to and incarcerate this monster.

Let's not forget Malmedy, the Bataan Death March, Andersonville, Elmira and all the other untold abuses against US POWs during times of war. I just don't get how members of the military back this guy. They're a disgrace to their country, to their uniforms and to their fallen brothers at arms.

Next year election is very much like 1864. Biden won 4 years ago but Trump continues the civil war and we cannot lose it by any means this time to the dictator. It is life or death for the American democracy and world peace. It is Nazi or democracy. We all must be Sgt. Edmonds and keep our unity at all cost.

With stories like this one and so many other stories of great everyday Americans doing courageous things it is beyond all reason that people look up to the orange one. He is unfit to breathe the same air that they did.

Ethics and integrity taught to me from my father and grandfather working as a very young person in the family business prior to be old enough to attend university. I observed how they treated people with dignity and respect. I watched how my mother and grandmother were both honored. My father would tell me my mother grew more beautiful every year! We need so much more of this kindness to heal the spirit of greed and power. Listen to the children.

Thanks for this brilliant reminder of just who we are as a country Steve. Lest we forget Major Sergeant Edmonds and all he stood for......

Never heard this story, now I'm glad you told it. I'm sure there are many more such stories out there that need to be told as a reminder that there are heroes in the world. And they don't have to be celebrities to earn that title.

I remember reading that story of Sgt. Edmonds. It made one proud to claim him as one of us. I remember thinking the Nazi's were all low life, stupid, depraved, evil creatures not fit for life and their psychological heirs are now aligned with the orange Jesus. It's so simple--if OJ wins, we all lose and the Fat Lady has a terrible voice.

Excellent story. As for Trump using the language of authoritarianism and evil intent; what else is new.

I think the MAGA mafia and the Diaper Don do it for two reasons: this is who they are, and secondly, it gets a rise out of all of us; and it’s another way to own the libs, media and never Trumper’s.

MAGA wants a rise, so they can knock others down with their nonsensical scripted points. They want a rise so they can stroke their egos and get off on domination. They want a rise so they can defend mass murder and incarceration of their own citizens. Thank heavens there are men who defend the innocent in this world.

Steve: You are absolutely right about Master Sgt. Edmonds. He was absolutely heroic and a true American hero! He deserves the Congressional Medal of Honor! Trump is also partially right about some immigrants poisoning our country. He married two immigrants, and had children with them. Also, his grandfather was a German immigrant, under the name Drumpf, which was later anglisized, and sired the Trump family, which began the poisoning.
