I could not disagree with you more. This is a mistake of Sarah Palin magnitude. This will lead to another term for Trump and WWIII.

Biden has out-raised Trump by double. We may not *love* him - but we will VOTE for him.

Stop this.

Ditto also... and what is infuriating to me is that no one talks about the fact that Biden has put in place amazing leaders across the entire policy spectrum. Yes, he may not be the most exuberant speaker but he gets advice from amazing people and he listens. And he's not that much older than Trump and he's in much better physical shape! We should be thanking our lucky stars that he is the leader today given the international landscape. While Steve and Joe Scarborough are right, every democrat says he's too old, I believe they will accept the fact and come out and vote for him - before they will vote for some green congressman that has no business trying to lead the free world. Steve - this is super disappointing. Heartbreaking.

WOW Steve, You are being lambasted for your support of Dean Phillips for president. But personally I am just thankful for your constant and courageous standing up for democracy.

As a Canadian whose own nation is now in great danger of the extreme right-wing conservative Pierre Poilievre being elected as our next Prime Minister, I know that for Donald Trump to be re-elected by our American neighbours would make it much more likely that Poilievre will be elected in Canada. And clearly for Trump to be re-elected would be a huge disaster for America.

So if I were an American, I would support almost anyone who can beat Donald Trump. And although Dean Phillips is relatively an unknown, Your support for him would mean a lot to me. As clearly above all, you are standing up for democracy.

Thank you Steve.

I don’t understand why many of you are planning to leave Steve Schmidt?

Because you disagree with Steve’s expressing his opinion regarding Joe Biden and Dean Phillips?

As a Canadian I thought that America is a land where people especially value freedom of expression.

And I thought that this group in particular values freedom of expression, and values this forum as a place where we can freely express our opinions even if we disagree with each other. Isn’t this what democracy is all about?

So I really hope you stay.

Please let’s continue to share our opinions and our disagreements too.

Expand full comment

I appreciate your thoughtful comment, as I have many other comments written by you in the past. I'm fine with Steve expressing his opinion re JB and DP. What I'm not fine with is his becoming Phillips' campaign manager. Running against the incumbent of the same party has had extremely negative consequences for the incumbent in the past. Current opinion is that any Democrat running against Biden will only serve to weaken his chances at reelection. The challenger will bring up issues which the pugs will use against Biden. It will divide our party: young v. old. I have been very concerned about Biden's age, and wished a year ago that he would hand-pick a successor. He did not do this + his work has continued to be outstanding, even phenomenal in dealing with the current major wars in two different parts of the world. The title Steve used, "President Biden deserves a primary because the practice of democracy is necessary for its preservation" is so disingenuous that I couldn't believe he actually thought that our super-duper-anti-orange-sadist group would buy it! I thought this title would have been more suitable: "President Biden deserves a primary like he needs a hole in his head." We are leaving because (as far as I have discerned) we believe that Steve's choosing to lead Phillips' campaign will be damaging to Biden, and might even lead to the orange sadist actually coming back into power. It is the antithesis of what we believed Steve believed, and the antithesis of the goal of all of us. Voicing positive thoughts about Phillips is one thing. Taking a paid position as his campaign manager is another thing altogether. Do I make sense?

Expand full comment

Yes, you make sense, and I agree that for Steve to lead Phillips’ campaign could be damaging to Biden.

I think Biden would be helped by a strong primary challenge. MAGA is painting Biden as weak, senile, befuddled, and a failure despite facts to the contrary. A third-party candidate would likely shift the election in favor of Trump. But that is not necessarily true for a Democratic primary.

Expand full comment

True, but this guy isn’t a known quantity, hasn’t accomplished much as a congressman, and definitely isn’t an inspirational candidate. How does this help democracy?

We should be focusing on building Biden’s achievements, not playing defense in the primaries.

I just don’t get the relevance of his campaign. We already have RFK Jr. entering as an independent. Manchin may enter as the No Labels candidate. And I see no upside to this campaign, in a “must-win” year to save democracy from the religious fanatics, and white nationalists.

That’s my point. Please let me know your take on this.

Expand full comment

A primary weakens the incumbent. It was true for Carter. It was true for Bush 41. Competent, deserving incumbents don't need primaries for the sake of democracy, and too much is at stake in this particular case to do anything but sing Biden's praises to the high heavens. Plus, he deserves it.

Expand full comment

You're implying that a democratic contest does not help democracy. Ponder that for a moment.

I do not believe a primary challenger will hurt the successful candidate's chances. Is Donald Trump hurt by his primary challengers? Indeed, if and when Trump falls - and he could fall - the Republicans will be 100% ready. Biden could literally have a fall, and then Harris is our only hope.

No way. The Democrats need a challenger. An unknown quantity may be just what we need.

Expand full comment

In normal times, I agree. These aren’t normal times. In normal times, we’d have a younger, more vibrant candidate.

This guy is none of that. Why is he even running? What’s his platform other than to make Biden look weaker. As though we aren’t facing a misinformation campaign already.

Remember, Biden had very slim majorities in the house (two votes), and 50-50 Senate, with two Trojan horses in our midst, when he assumed power. Then, we lost the house.

And if you actually believe this guy could be the Democratic savior, I have a bridge in Brooklyn for sale, you just might be interested in.

Whether you’re right or wrong, is immaterial at this point. Everyone had a chance to enter earlier, now is the time to unite, not divide the party. And let’s not forget, we need independents to win. Starting a war within the party will not get anyone votes at this point.

Expand full comment

I believe it is already fait accompli that Biden will lose. He must go.

Expand full comment

There is such thing as a fait accompli until all the votes are counted. Have you learned nothing from 2016, when Hillary was up in the polls by 10% with a week to go?

Right now the election is essentially tied, and it will be decided by four swing states. Biden will again win the popular vote by millions. So I’m not really sure of your point.

What, exactly, is your problem with Harris? Do you believe she has gained nothing from the guidance and policies of Biden? She has not been allowed much a chance to shine. But, I'd take her ANY DAY over this unknown, inexperienced character that Steve is suggesting.

Expand full comment

Can we all please stop bashing VP Harris? SERIOUSLY! Leave it to Democrats to do the same exact thing that was done to Hillary beforehand. Harris is literally being HILLARIED and has been since the day she and Joe took office. It's ridiculous and counterproductive. In 2020 Harris was my first choice for President, before she dropped out of the race before my state voted in the primary. The Biden campaign raised $26 million dollars the day he announced that he had picked her as his running mate for VP. The hour after naming Harris his running mate was Biden’s best 60 minutes of fundraising in the campaign up to that point. So please, enough with the Harris bashing. It's nauseating.

Expand full comment

I've heard her public speeches and interviews. She can't do it. She can't articulate what needs to be articulated. She can't think on her feet. Like I said, neither she nor Biden have done anything to counter the disinformation. That takes constant, nonstop in-person face-to-face retail politics. She's hasn't done anything to improve her standing in the country. We will lose because of her.

Expand full comment

You mean be articulate and think on their feet like Trump or DeSantis? That we would lose because she is inarticulate? This cannot be a serious comment. We would lose if she were the candidate because she is a woman of color. Full stop. That is the reason. It is a shame, but America is simply not ready for a female president.

I pray that you read my comment here and rethink this. This is all I have to say about your disturbing Substack column today. ASK JIMMY CARTER (the sitting president at the time) HOW WELL TED KENNEDY’S PRIMARY CAMPAIGN “HELPED” HIM WIN RE-ELECTION IN 1980. You are the ultimate student of history and an eloquent orator and storyteller of how our past can become future again if it is ignored. I BEG YOU TO RECONSIDER THIS EFFORT AND REMEMBER THE HISTORY OF THE 1980 ELECTION. You will almost assuredly disagree with me on my next point but I would argue that Ronald Reagan’s election to the presidency in 1980 is what got this country (and specifically the GOP) started on the death spiral that we are currently witnessing, and basically have been on since he was inaugurated in 1981. I beg of you to please reconsider this fool’s errand. You and Phillips will only weaken our only bulwark against the anti-democratic, illiberal, theocrats and authoritarian GOP and their felon candidate. That bulwark is Joe Biden. Please halt this campaign now. JOE BIDEN FOR PRESIDENT! Biden/Harris 2024!

Expand full comment

Jody, I was a Jimmy Carter Democrat once upon a time. I voted for him twice, and never regretted it. I was in my early 20’s then. I agree 100% about 1980 and Ted Kennedy and what it did to Carter.

I also agree 100% Reagan was the beginning of that death spiral that is about to culminate in the actual death of democracy. He had the actor smooth style, and people are so shallow and gullible (see today), but two things stand out in my mind about Reagan as the catalyst for our collapse. He went to Philadelphia, Mississippi only SEVENTEEN years after the horrible murders and talked about states rights, etc. Not too subtle, huh? Racists picked up that signal loud and clear. Second, his “I’m from the government, and I’m here to help you” speech set us on a road to today’s nihilistic GOP and the general disgust in the public with the same government, taxes, etc. that assists many of the biggest complainers with Social Security, Medicare, VA benefits, military retirements, disaster relief, border security, national parks, and on and on. The cognitive dissonance is staggering.

Anyway, this was a great post!

Hi Rick, somehow my reply to you got stuck down thread as its own comment. I loved your reply to me so wanted to make sure you received my reply back. I've copied and pasted here in case you didn't see it down thread:

Thank you Rick for your thoughtful comment. Don’t get me started on Reagan. Ex-Democrat, his family nearly lost everything in the depression, he and his family benefited greatly from FDR’s policies and the New Deal which helped him be able to pull himself up and out and get to Hollywood to become the star he became. President of SAG, then starts lurching rightward once his pockets and belly are full, railing against “socialized medicine” and becoming a shill for the billionaire ultra right wingers. Reagan is the epitome of what’s wrong with the few that got to live the very DEAD American dream. He forgot where and what he came from. And yes his dog whistling was as shameful 43 years ago as it is now. The beginning of the end for any of us that were born and stay on Main Street, or worse. Screw Reagan.

Expand full comment

Thanks, Jody, I never understood the fascination with and worship of Reagan either. He always seemed fake to me. One of my perhaps irrational (but important to me) criteria for voting (in the good old days when candidates released their tax returns) was charitable giving. I distinctly remember how generous Carter was and how next to zero Reagan was. In another race, as I recall, Bush was quite generous and Gore gave virtually nothing. It is a small thing, and a gross oversimplification on my part, but it was relevant to me. Anyway, we are on the same page about Reagan.

Expand full comment

Does anyone remember that when Reagan became POTUS, one of the first things he did was to take down the solar panels that Carter had put on the WH's roof? That should have given us all a clue!

Ronald Reagan was the puppet/voice of his wife, Nancy!

Expand full comment

Actually, I don't think she was smart enough!

Expand full comment

Thank you for this thoughtful, and I'd say accurate, comment. Only one point: I feel that our decline originated with Nixon, and his subsequent pardon. Then Reagan with his "trickle-down" theories and Welfare Queens. Following that, Fox News, and Citizens United, completed the groundswell that led to Trump. I'm also from NJ, originally Hunterdon County, now in Sussex (MAGA hell). I, too, think that this unknown character jumping in at the last minute will bring us another Trump presidency, or some other fascist-leaning republican. The GOP does not exist anymore, it's been dead for a few years now. This is not a time for experimentation.

Expand full comment

I have one more Reagan comment. While there is no question about Nixon’s “southern strategy” to appeal to white southerners-lots of whom, but not all were racists— it was only in the 1980’s that virtually all southern officeholders switched from D to R. In my state of Texas, it was an absolute avalanche of switching parties even in the middle of their terms. In suburban Austin(Williamson County) where I then lived, every single county officeholder switched in the mid 1980’s. Why did they all do that? Were all of them racists or libertarians or government haters or whatever? No, but they decided their voters were, and just like today, they sold their souls to get re-elected. I must admit, though, such weakness and opportunism cannot hold a candle to today’s GOP. Reagan was not Donald Trump. The utter debasement and surrender to such a repulsive, sick and depraved person as Trump shows an absolute lack of any moral courage or character, and is heartbreaking. To see my fellow Christians, with few exceptions, do this in particular has shaken me to my core.

Expand full comment

As LBJ stated after he signed the Civil Rights Act: we have just lost the South! Nixon just took that statement and ran with it! Remember, George Wallace was a huge southern Democratic politician!

Expand full comment

Hi Patt, I believe the rot set in with GOP the minute that JFK narrowly beat Nixon in 1960, and the GOP has been out to usurp democracy at every chance they get since. 100% right on the Nixon pardon after Watergate, not to mention the Supreme Court usurping democracy from the people while selecting, not electing, George W. Bush, when they ended the recounts in Florida for no good reason. What happened to their love of states’ rights? They’re full of shit, as usual. And how about McConnell’s power grab of stealing TWO SCOTUS seats? Not one, two. Because Republicans haven’t believed in playing fair since Eisenhower was president. “The rules always apply to thee...but never to me”.

Expand full comment

Glad I came back to this thread to read your post. I remember very well the JFK election....I was just a teenager. I was shocked over the outcry over a Catholic being elected, I could not understand why that would matter.

IMO, Eisenhower was the last good Republican. I think of him every time I enter an interstate. He was, as a general, very anti-war and, for those days, anti-guns. I inherited a truck from my father that had a couple Eisenhower quotes stuck on it, even tho' my father was a hardened true Dem. When I moved to this area, those stickers were still on the truck, and I loved them. But, a friend of mine warned me that in this area of NJ, those quotes could endanger me, or my truck. Eisenhower's views did not "resonate" with today's GOP.

"he could weaken Biden and allow the election to fall to Trump" -- is PRECISELY what I fear. What in the name of God is Steve thinking?!

What is Steve thinking? $$$$$

I feel sick, to know that you are right. I've been trying to find out how much he's being paid. I'm really curious. Phillips is a guy with access to millions and millions of dollars. (I wondered why Steve abruptly almost doubled the cost of his substack from $60/yr. to $100/yr. It seemed really strange. Ah, well, can't get it back now.)

I totally agree. This terrible move brings us one giant step closer to Trump in the White House and the end of the US and democracy. This is NOT THE MOVE. I wish Steve had signed on to help BIDEN.

He sure could have tried to get on the Biden team. Not sure if they'd have him.

I’m so disappointed that you are taking on this task. So disappointed. You’re not doing it for Biden, Steve, no matter what you’re saying. Please rethink your choice.

How much is he paying you? You forever rail on about political grifters, perhaps it’s time for a little introspection!

I stopped listening to Joe on morning joe over a year ago, he’s insufferable, the guests are the only reason to pay the slightest attention to the show. You are free to support whoever you want, but I’m going to stick with the most experienced man running, Joe Biden is a proven leader, do I think he’s been perfect, the answer is no, but that’s not enough reason to not support him. Do I wish he was younger, the answer is yes, I wish I was younger as well, I believe he is surrounded by brilliant people, that I wish were better at getting their message out to the uninformed public, that’s where you can play a part Steve. We are going to win this election, we don’t have a choice, we have to win it, not for ourselves, many of us will be gone soon enough, but for our heirs. You can help this inexperienced congressman if you want, and that down the road may be a good thing, but most of us are going to stick with the guy that got us here. I joined the LP because of you Steve, because I too believed that we needed to do everything we could to defeat the insipid clown, that belief has not changed. Our president is a good man and he deserves our support, he’s got mine, just like John McCain got mine back in the day. I was willing to walk into hell for my brothers in arms 50 years ago in VN, and I have paid a price for that ever since, I feel the same way about Joe Biden, I’ll have his back until the end.

Okay, I have read this newsletter for almost a year and while it scares me sometimes, I see the point. I also understand that competition is good, especially in politics. (Term limits are not bad, either.) But coming from Dean Phillips' district and having attended Town Hall meetings and voted for him, read his newsletter faithfully, I don't think he has the knowledge base yet for the serious complexities of what's occurring around the world. Dean is a terrific person, he's highly involved in our district, open doors, speaks his mind, is diplomatic and I think he's right about needing a new era of senior leaders in our country. He quit the Democratic leadership in the House, thanks a bunch, Dean, how does that improve District 3's representation?

Our district is a purple district. We need him here! I don't need a Democratic who lives five miles outside of our district like the new guy who just tossed his hat into the ring. I don't think Dean has had enough experience. But I think he is right that the Dems need better succession planning. And they have to hop on that fast. I wish Gavin Newsom would run, that guy has a world of experience administratively and also in foreign affairs. But I'll vote for Joe Biden, if he's the guy on the ticket.

It's nice to hear something about Dean Phillips, because I've never even heard of him, and I read _a lot_ of political stuff. I will not repeat what others have already said so eloquently, that this is a huge mistake, but I also wanted to add that running someone who has absolutely _no_ international experience, as far as I can tell is extremely dangerous, especially now, but truly, anytime.

Expand full comment

Exactly my thoughts regarding international experience! Joe Biden has the depth of knowledge and experience we need now, more than ever, considering the situations around the world. The last thing we need is another wealthy businessman in the White House!

Steve, I suggest that you stop being guided by the ridiculous polls, and listen to Simon Rosenberg on Hopium Chronicles. Everyone should check this Substack, and find out about the positive things happening, and his explanation for why the current polls are meaningless.

But IS it "ridiculous polls" that Steve is responding to? or is it the money Phillips is paying him? The whole things feels disingenuous to me.

I agree. The Hopium Chronicles are great!

Thank you providing your insights into Rep Phillips; it’s better than what I found through my travels on the Web. It is disturbing that we know almost nothing about this man and what aspirational thoughts he has about leading the USA. POTUS is not a training ground for presidents. The winner must demonstrate with hard facts and figures that he/she has the intellectual talent, tact and thorough knowledge of the Constitution, Domestic and Foreign Affairs and the role and machinery of Government. We certainly learned what happens when the President has no such knowledge or experience (read Trump).

Agree 💯 with Jennifer. I am worried about young people staying home with the “old guy” running. I too wish Newsom was the challenger. Phillips strikes me as a vanity run. However, I will work on voter registration and turnout for the next 12 months to ensure the preservation of democracy and will support whoever the Democratic nominee is.

Gavin Newsom...next time, for sure.

If there is a next time. If Trump wins, kiss a fair 2028 election goodbye.

I agree with you about Gavin Newsom. He has all it takes, but for some reason he held back and heavily endorsed Biden. My only guess was that he wants to run in 2028?

But there won't be a 2028 if Trump gets in. No more elections, I would almost guarantee!

I have long admired your intellect and patriotism. No more. I am deeply disappointed and horrified by your latest venture. There is nothing in Dean's background that qualifies him for president. Your fee for this debacle must be impressive. Shame on you.
