tickets are bought for Tuesday morning in IMAX - can't wait - but it's not the choir that needs reminding, it is the idiots that will vote for the maniac Trump in 2024. Indicted, convicted or not, he will get his minions to vote for him. Fingers crossed toes crossed and even eyes crossed that he loses.

You likely disagree, but I think Gn Miley’s comment to Nancy Pelosi has meaning. My interpretation is that while only the president can initiate the use of nuclear weapons, there are a few others who must concur for the order to be carried out. I have no doubt the order will be carried out if it’s in response to an attack on the US. But if an unstable, genius wants to use a nuke without concurrence from senior military and civilian advisors, I think the order will be stopped. Unprovoked use of a nuclear weapon would be a war crime, and therefore the order to launch would be an illegal order that should not be followed.

Expand full comment

I don’t disagree. Someone other than the President has to push the button. The person might be court martialed but destruction of the world is not an easy decision but Trumpkin would make it in a NY minute if he “felt” like it. Go watch Dr Strangelove or 7 days in May if you want to know what it’s all about. I’m sure there are others but I can’t remember them.

Expand full comment

I remember both of them vividly, but Seven Days in May was especially frightening. General Milley must have had a workaround to prevent tfg from starting a nuclear war. He and the people down the line would have pled guilty to treason, etc. if necessary to save us.

I believed that too. I think I had some reason to believe it but, even if there was some understanding, it wouldn't be talked about except vaguely I suppose.

I am still believing in Michael Cohen's opinion that Donald wouldn't really run again-- too much dread of losing again. Yes, he appears to be running, I realize, but he's surely making money now, and he's in central position! But he might get that ailment in his feet at any time.

Marsha - I grew up in Detroit. We knew we were a first strike city because of all the manufacturing plants here at the time. Most of us agreed with your father. In fact we regularly “played a game” that I have only seen once in a movie called “The Courier”. The “game was “You have “X” minutes before the nukes hit. What are you going to do? The answers depended on what time of day or night and as the technology improved the window shortened. We figured the people our age in Moscow were playing the same game. When I heard someone from the Middle East say Americans don’t know what living in fear was - I thought “lady try growing up with a nuke or two aimed at you”.

We were the hide under the desk and tuck your head down generation because of nukes in the 60’s, not the assault weapons. Sadly the kids today DO understand the threat and consequences of such an attack. To us it was a game as well, though not to our parents I suppose. We lived just outside DC and my Dad, a WWII vet told us not to take the drills too seriously. Later in life he confessed it was because he knew we would be vaporized but he played it like the “don’t worry” guy he was. What a world.

Bruce, I find myself thinking of the “daisy ad”. The one showing the adorable little girl picking daisies in a field. The screen goes white. Then the mushroom cloud. I am, or was, a member of America’s nuclear establishment with a career of over 40 years in it. Indeed, my first “exposure” came in 1958, when my family became involved with the US nuclear navy. That being said, the nuclear community has NEVER forgotten the existential threat posed by these weapons of true mass destruction. Non proliferation remains the greatest need for common global action. Climate change will inconvenience us. Nuclear war, even a small “regional” exchange, will end civilization as we know it. Google the concept of nuclear winter. BAN THE BOMB. That is what Oppie and others quickly learned. 80 years later, we remain impervious to this truth.

Yes, and do you believe what he did with the treaty in Iran? Recently he made a comment about Iran beginning to look pretty dangerous.

Expand full comment

You’re right Steven. It is a brilliant movie that reveals the conflict and despair that consumed Oppenheimer after he created the Atomic bomb. Once upon a time, there were efforts to quell the proliferation of nuclear bombs. That time has come and gone. Certain countries throughout the world not only manufacture, but play “chicken” and “saber-rattle” their collections of nuclear stock-piles. Notably, Russia and North Korea boast their nuclear capabilities frequently. Both these countries are run by sick individuals. God forbid that Trump ever gets re-elected. He, too cannot be trusted with nuclear codes. Human-kind is doing its very best to extinguish its own existence. This is just one of the ways....

Expand full comment

One needs to match the solemnity of Steve Schmidt on this subject with the uncharacteristic seriousness of Fran Lebowitz on the one POTUS who is, as Steve describes, unlike all the others:

“Everyone says he is crazy – which maybe he is – but the scarier thing about him is that he is stupid. You do not know anyone as stupid as Donald Trump. You just don’t."

The prospect of that rank moron being given nuclear codes and darkening the doorway of our White House once more is truly scary.

All you say is true. My life has spanned the end of WWII, through the air raid drills and howling test sirens of the Cold War, through to the Not-Soviet-in-Name-Only Putin regime. I drove up and down I-5 from Seattle to the Bay Area when I was in college in the early 60s. There is one town in Oregon (Happy Valley, I think) which was thought to be the one place on the West Coast least likely to suffer fallout. I remember clearly the RELIEF I felt while driving past--suddenly the constant subliminal fear lifted for 15 minutes.

But are we absolutely sure those guys in the Silo would launch a warhead against, say, India because some tRump was pissed at the reception he got from Modi?

I vaguely recall some brave soul during the Cold War, Russian in my memory, who bravely did NOT hit the button when something like geese crossed the DEW line or Russian equivalent. Anyone else recall this? Ah, memory is partly still with me:

https://www.pbs.org/wnet/secrets/the-man-who-saved-the-world-about-this-episode/871/

No--it is fully with me. Happened twice: https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-24280831

It can take one insane person with power to destroy the world. It seems that at least twice it took one sane person to save it.

I do remember the Canadian snow geese incident in, I believe, 1983. A radar signature that appeared to be Soviet incoming. Reagan had just referred to the USSR as an “evil empire.” We came, as I recall, within about 15 minutes of mutually assured destruction (MAD).

No other creature has the mental acuity and capacity to extinguish its kind. We have nuclear power to do the job by using it. We have climate change to do the job by ignoring or belittling it. And we, in our infinite creativity, have artificial intelligence to do the job by unleashing it. When Doctor Frankenstein built a monster he could not control he foretold what we are about to do as a species. We have created or allowed all three of these potential killers. We don’t know which one will do it but it is better than 50/50, IMHO that one of them will. It’s a race we want no one to win. Oh, there’s a fourth. We might suffocate first by having our heads in the sand.

In October 1962, Michael Reese Hospital Medical Center (Chicago) went on alert for 13 days we held our breath. Cuba had missiles aimed at the US that Russia had sent them. In the ED we were told of a new triage: no one under 5 or over 50 was to be treated except for pain. We needed to focus on those who could survive and rebuild. I was 19. I feared I would never see 21. If man was intelligent enough to invent a means to destroy this planet, then he better have a means to prevent that from happening and stop destroying our earth’s climate before we become extinct.

Not sure we are intelligent enough to do so. An evolutionary mistake: humans.
