Things feel dire and it is because they are dire. Sadly, also, today is Lincoln’s birthday.

I grew up in Dallas in the 1950s & 60s. My school never mentioned Lincoln’s holiday! Being Jewish we had to say a Christian prayer over the PA system every morning. Slavery was taught as happy Blacks dancing in the fields. The Holocaust? No mention. Girls took home ec, boys took shop. Happy Daze? Welcome BACK TO THE PAST. No Black ever set foot in my school, water fountains, bathrooms, pools, buses, ambulances, hospitals all segregated.

We let go of the reins. Media and technology were and still are an addiction and distraction. The creators themselves admitted addicting us has been built into the software. The time spent face to face and engaged in our communities was replaced with family members siloed each in their own room with their IPHONE and computers. Too many opted to not vote for too long a time. Then the media took the reins for they found their power and a way toward enriching themselves. It was don at the expense of what should be their role; and we took the "click bait" which led to divisiveness and hate and name calling anonymously tossed back and forth online and in the comments page of news articles. We were played. We looked away. And now it is up to us. The one benefit there are not many souls looking away today for we woke up to a bloodless coup. Media enriched itself. Politicians on the whole enriched themselves. We are left holding the bag and it is empty. In my opinion although I'm open and inviting of any argument against it. I want to be wrong.

I am of the same generation. I thought the curriculum for public schools was taught the same from state to state. I certainly learned about Abe Lincoln. President Eisenhower's black and white portrait hung on the wall (he was the President) alongside Abe Lincoln's portrait. I knew of the holocaust as many of the people in the neighborhood were survivors, though they never spoke of it.

And I remember a riveting lesson in third grade taught by a substitute teacher who went a bit outside the curriculum in the parochial school. It was so exciting the way she taught. Her assignment was to split us in half and each of us had to argue for or against slavery. I remember being assigned to the side of the south. It took some imagination to argue for what I was taught was wrong.

It never occurs to us when we look back on history that in fact people held the belief that some horror was right. Look at Nazi Germany -- other nations including our nation had large numbers of people who thought Hitler was a great leader. That same teacher gave us lots of writing assignments. I remember her being so impressed with a story I wrote. She was a good teacher. She let us learn and discover under her guidance. Amazing teacher.

I grew up in the Bronx in NY. I don't recall seeing black families in my neighborhood. But, one year some 12 years after I was born a Puerto Rican family bought one of the houses -- they were all two families, I could feel the response to the Puerto Rican family. There was fear but I never heard a harsh word even though you could feel the tremors in the neighborhood. I remember my parents taught us to be welcoming and treat all people with dignity. Not in words but in how they behaved. They taught by example.

Steve is right and you are right: Direcon 5. The Democratic politicians of our time - our 2025 time of Defcon 5 nuclear annihilation of the American constitution and experiment - are not fit for this time. They're not the Greatest Generation type with grit and keen-eyed perception, and an absolute commitment to fight fascism. There are some notable exceptions (AOC, Warren, Murphy). And I do love seeing/hearing Elizabeth Warren raise her voice with in-the-trenches combat-helmet passion. Super intelligence and passion from Warren. I want to see real MLK passion. Murphy is catching fire.

Most all of the other politicians (and the media talking heads that cover them and the news) have no passion, just a very annoying, depressing phlegmatic delivery when every house in America is on fire, and everybody will be burned. And smile way too much. Why all the smiling on camera? Are the MSM exec suits and the show producers saying "Smile more. Smile often. Show those teeth." While the suffering will be exponential from the guillotining of USAID and the science research, poor aid, low income aid, disease prevention, weather forecasting and alerts, and everything else that actually helps people in the spirit of the US Constitution. So I'm not expecting leaders to come out of the political class.

Who will be the Martin Luther King Jr? Or the Gandhi? I'm watching David Hogg, the 24 year old school shooting survivor and political activist just elected a vice chair of the DNC. What will he actually do? Not say. But do. I'm watching all the young, upcoming generation of thinkers and doers. Are they the new Greatest Generation? Are they going get people to stand up and resist and stare down and nonviolently fight down the anti-democratic, anti-Constitution, oligarchy fascist take over? What will David Hogg and his fellow activists do if Trump and Vance and Musk and all the merry Hitler-mini-me's of the executive branch choose to defy the courts, to say "Courts, you have no enforcement power, so you can't make me do anything and I will do whatever I want."

I believe the media rules. They can make or break a candidate. We do not read. We look at pictures and share memes. FDR would never have made it today. A cripple who could not walk unassisted. In that time the media actually stepped away from a story that would infringe on the personal and it was for the good in my opinion. Today a great leader can stand before us and one opportune awkward moment will define their career forever.

The result is those who are less capable and incompetent, but performative get the vote and the favor of the media. The media profits when the "show pony" is put on their front page. I don't want a President to be performative. I want a hard-working focused, selfless and dignified competent leader. We had that in Biden but even in his most vital years the work he was doing which will transcend time and be felt more and more with each generation was too boring.

We looked away. We thought everything was predictable. We thought we were in control without doing any of the work. We allowed ourselves to be divided. And none of us read Project 2025 much less the Constitution. We expected others to do the heavy lifting for us. The worst was we were bitterly divided.

We were set up for sure, and we lost. Lost everything for us and our children. This is the end -- I don't see us rising from it. Do you? I want to hear we can do it. I need to see we can. Meanwhile I will be at a meeting with local democrats tomorrow evening and will at a protest gathering next week.

What has happened to our country? Musk sounded like a babbling idiot who should be on his way to a hospital for a psyche evaluation and Trump looked like a befuddled, confused old man in a nursing home pretending to be president.

What have we done and how do we stop it? Why won't Democrats in the Senate impress upon Schumer the need to stop Trump by defunding the government unless he meets Steve's three very reasonable conditions? At times, it takes a crisis to end a more dangerous and threatening crisis.

we will stop "it" with our blood -- that is what we have come to -- the only way to stop "it" is with our blood -- for the push back will be a level of cruelty not seen before -- that is what we have let ourselves come to -- each of us was blind and very comfortable letting "them" and "they" take care of every "thing" for us -- in fact by all evidence we are still clinging to that myth -- the one where "someone" does "something" that makes "everything" okay for us

we have no choice — for it is in our DNA — but we do have the love and support of our allies the people — our history is long — we have been isolated from them — classic move of an abuser — we have been abused emotionally, financially and with the expunging of law order physically unsafe — but our enemy is weak and a coward — and afraid of us — his Achilles heel is his vanity but also the stock market — I invite our allies to tariff the hell out of us — we can recover our economy and support each other thru it — but we cannot recover our freedom once it is lost — the victim of abuse must reach out and it is the same for us — we are being isolated but do not surrender — a card or a child’s drawing anything sent to all of our allies will be seen and we will be heard with a message that is not in line with our king

Trump is weak and unwell. Musk knows this and is working it to his advantage. The buffoonery is beyond disgusting. Now, the Oval Office has become the Oval Kiddie Room. What the h**l is going on? My distant paternal grandfather fought during The American Revolutionary War as a Private with the Virginia 9th Regiment. Two uncles served during WW2, the older uncle retiring from the U.S. Army at Lt. Colonel. I served with USAF as a Sergeant in Intel. I recite that history because we were fighting against the very tyranny and treachery that now has a choke hold on our republic. Trump and Musk are traitors. Republicans are lemmings blindly following the traitors. Democrats can’t get out of their own way, spineless to a fault. It is no wonder our ship of state is like the Titanic, what with Trump and Musk forming the iceberg into which our ship will ram. Our PERSONAL DATA is being accessed by the ENEMY. Is there no shame left? Are we the people simply to succumb to such violation? There was a time when the Trumps and Musks of our world would be incarcerated for life; or, worse. The obsequious nature of so many men is beyond understanding. Eunuchs, each and every one.

Very powerful, very true, and very needed. The Senate hasn't much time to get its act together. But I'm hoping that you can focus a piece on Pete Hegseth's first major speech, and focuses on Trump's position on ending the war in Ukraine. It may fly under the radar, and needs exposure.

https://www.defense.gov/News/Speeches/Speech/Article/4064113/opening-remarks-by-secretary-of-defense-pete-hegseth-at-ukraine-defense-contact/

Hegseth, as Trump's spokesperson, is confirming that the US is making complete break with the international order established and practiced for the past 80 years. Clearly, the speech was written by someone with practice in making a radical political shift sound like an ordinary and logical policy decision. It's terrifying news for Ukraine, and for Europe.
