Thank you, Steve, for another top-notch takedown of a very dangerous "loon," whose financial wealth and deranged chutzpah have bought herself a Congressional seat, where she wreaks havoc at the expense of the American people's best interests.

Your illustrative metaphors are incomparable and unexcelled: "She’s like a velociraptor that broke through the glass, and now lives amongst her captives seemingly unaware of their fear, nervousness and disdain."

Incidentally, the Wikipedia page on MTG serves as a good reminder of all the terrible, trashy, hateful shite this demented woman has spewed from her earliest time of campaigning for Georgia's 14th district seat until now....

Timothy, I also enjoy Steve's illustrative metaphors (a natural high), and the one you quoted here is just superb and a little spooky, "...(she) now lives amongst her captives seemingly unaware of their fear, nervousness and disdain." This is grotesque and sadly true. I had to look up 'velociraptor', a small dinosaur. One description I found which is fitting for MTG is: “Velociraptor was actually about the size of a large chicken or turkey - considerably smaller than the average adult human.” Steve really nailed this one! Thanks, and I appreciate seeing you here:) XO

"...thinking about how to manipulate, incite and energize her..."

My larger concern with the Member from Georgia is the ability to be manipulated in ways that I have never seen. A few months back she was yelling about our troops in Syria. Why were those mentioned, and who told her to mention them? Sharing the confidential briefings with everyone so "all can know" when this only supports US enemies and endangers our allies. Watching her run in and out of hearing or briefings, she is there for performance theater and nothing else.

Her vocalization (and there is nothing subtle about her communication methods) are fed by someone, but by whom? She has the notoriety, but who is behind directing her actions.

No, I am not a conspiracy theorist by any stretch, but I am wondering who on her staff is providing the lines for her. Or is it her staff? Or is it someone else?

Liz, good points you're making here. These are MTG's backers who brought her to power: (according to the Wikipedia article i accessed about a year ago:)

"Prominent Republicans who supported Greene in her candidacy included representatives Jim Jordan of Ohio and Andy Biggs of Arizona, and Mark Meadows, President Trump's former chief of staff.[37][38][39][40] Meadows' wife, Debbie Meadows, is the executive director of RightWomen Pac, which endorsed Greene and contributed $17,500 to Greene's primary efforts. Other donors include Barb Van Andel-Gaby, the chair of board of the Heritage Foundation, and L. Lin Wood, an attorney and fellow conspiracy theorist.[41] Greene also received support from the House Freedom Fund, a political action committee and the campaign fundraising arm of the House Freedom Caucus.[38]"

Haven’t we seen MTG’s shtick before? Her name was Sarah Palin. The difference is they at least tried to put lipstick on that pig. MTG is just trash, regardless of her $millions.

60 Minutes gave her a national platform which, in the current political climate, serves only to cast a klieg light of legitimacy onto her schtick. Shame on CBS.

Actually my hope is the interview, and I did not watch, will be used for appropriate political advertising by anti-MAGA groups.

Great idea, Let's see if that reakky happens.

I 100% Agree. The media is a huge part of this whole idiotic mess we're in. MTG in Congress?! She's a conspiracy-theorist-grifting nut-case. Why pretend otherwise?

As Steve said, in one of his zoom sessions: "The bearded lady sells." Our Democracy is a stake -we have to wake up out of this national circus show.

I understand why 60 Minutes chose to interview Trump while he was President, but to give audience to MTG? Steve, the punchline that I took away from your essay was: “She is perfectly matched for OUR low standards and neediness to see some version of the same attractions PT Barnum invented”. Keyword: “OUR”...Indeed. The lack of education in this country is quite evident. It’s one thing to have watched the Jay Leno (and now, Jimmy Kimmel) segments on TV when passerbys get interviewed on the street and you see how little the “average Joe” knows...or doesn’t know: that’s entertainment (sort of). However, a woman like this so highly revered in her State, and one of the leaders of “our” House of Representatives is just befuddling, embarrassing and downright scary!!

To be exposed is to be shown NEW information. So only people who don't know her as well as her supporters and detractors can be exposed. Her supporters KNOW and LOVE who she is. Her detractors--folks like us--KNOW her too BECAUSE we have been EXPOSED. I know plenty of people who aren't steeped in politics and I hoped they watched. I hope they got EXPOSED.

I’m betting you did not watch the interview. Leslie Stahl pulled no punches, and revealed MTG’s staggering ignorance and deceitful nature.

Expand full comment

I did watch it Craig. I stand by my remarks though. MTG is one of 435 members of the House. It’s “water under the bridge” at this point, but I think that even ‘bad publicity’ is still publicity, - and this 60 Minutes interview only RAISED MTG’s stock; she’s even more famous now (or infamous) than ever before because of this interview.

I 100% Agree. She was on '60 minutes'! She must be 'important'...? What a mess.

My own belief is that she is one of the 'shadow' Speakers of the MAGA House along with Elise Stefanick and Jim Jordan. Kevin -I'll never leave that woman- McCarthy is titular Speaker, but all four consult regularly with El Caudillo to set the agenda of maximum chaos. They operate with the Trump manifesto: if we can't have power, then, by God, we will 'burn it to the ground.' The debt ceiling will be their ultimate explosive ordnance.

I see the 'MTG spectacle' as a product of bizarre social media algorithms that feed millions of people one hyped up conspiracy theory after another and exploit the vulnerabilities and ignorance of their viewers. Also, Faux News Infotainment and other profit-based media outlets have helped to create this MTG Monster. Her rise to a position of dangerous political power is also a reflection on the lack of quality civics and 'critical thinking skills' education in our schools. We have much work to do. Thank you Steve Schmidt.

She is a cultist along with the entire Republican party and especially Ginney Thomas. We are living amongst cultist and they want so badly to belong to something bigger and better than them. They live for indoctrinating the rest of us and they don't care how they do it. They will lie, cheat and steal to get you in their corner. What a shame that the American people are too stupid to recognize this nonsense. Perhaps one day we will wake up from the haze.

Yes, "MAGA-CULT": there are millions of Americans who have been indoctrinated into the MAGA-CULT (let's call it what it IS) and some are now co-CULT-leaders and millions are MAGA-CULT followers. Yes, they will lie, cheat, and steal -and many will kill and die for their seemingly all powerful leader, their'"God". This mass cult movement may take decades to fade away.

Some people are angry about 60 minutes doing an interview on MTG. I watched out of curiosity to see how Stahl would do her interview. She could have pushed her a little more but I think because MTG is known to have a low fuse and history of not being able to tolerate exposure to her lies, Stahl may have held back. I think she wanted her to stay on the stage and complete the interview. At least now America nationally has seen who the MAGA party is really being run by. It is not Kevin McCarthy.

As a former journalism student I agreed with 60 Min to interview MTG. So much of what we see is tv clips or tweets and not a full conversation. She was obviously very uncomfortable with the back & forth questioning because she's way over her head. Does she or doesn't she stand behind her social media? Does she understand Nato and the future ramifications of Ukraine/Taiwan? Does she realize that the constitution expressly states that the US as a Christian nation is a no-go? And on and on and on. Unfortunately Kevin isn't much better. How long until we see her tossing her hat in the ring for president! Scares the living daylights outa me.

Sometimes I get so angry over weirdos like MTG & then Steve captures who she is with his sharp words & I feel better. Not better bc she can do some real harm to America but because he sees her clearly & his description is everything I thought she was & simply couldn’t put into words. I feel like I’m in good company against the MTGs of the world.

I had a visceral reaction up to the broadcast last night, reliant on my trust in 60 Minutes to expose her, but seriously concerned that 15 minutes would feed the “confused” voters you reminded me about yesterday.

Minimally 10 minutes were the exposure I needed to rely on encouraging other American voters to easily see what a lying loon she is. BUT the 5 minutes showing her as a normal ignorant, defensive angry woman, privileged with power and influence over others ..... kicked up that blame game in me, you reminded me to avoid 28 hours ago!

Ugh....

The confused, used ignorant voter is absolutely our biggest issue, with these power hungry liars and radicals as demigods in their communities, raising them up into MTG and Boebert spectacles on a global stage.

Ugh. What a shit show...

Thanks for the validations Steve!

Ps.... looking forward to seeing your next live show with Tim Ryan. It would be great to hear your thoughts re: Sununu on Bill Maher this week; Twitter feeds show he is likely to run against Trump, he voted for twice, maintains he’d vote for the Republican candidate no matter how corrupt, using NH state economics as his platform to run. He’s the opposite threat of MTG, moderate, socially responsible? But will throw all his weight behind a lying loon, because “party first” please expand and share your thoughts on these types leaders? McCarthy (same) see ya Tuesday!

Wow, Gayle, "The confused, used ignorant voter is absolutely our biggest issue, with these power hungry liars and radicals as demigods in their communities, raising them up into MTG and Boebert spectacles on a global stage." You summed up so much that's going on right there. Were these confused, used ignorant voters watching 60 minutes, though? Did that interview make a difference to the sector of people that you've described here? Or, did they 'hear' that MTG was on 60 minutes, a big deal!, and that she announced that Democrats are 'baby killers', which would just further impress her followers and encourage them to take her even more seriously. Concerning!

Excellent article again, Steve! But there’s another question I can’t get out of my mind. What about the reps who seemed to guide tours inside the halls of the capital over the days leading up to Jan 6? Nothing?

What happened re the search into the identity of that mysterious small individual who was videotaped walking around DC, leaving pipes (or similar articles) near certain offices during the hours before the riots? Were these packages ever examined?

I’ve always found their small frame and gate curious. I’ve never heard any information though... But I’ve been hearing about visits to some people who’re either accused or convicted with connections to various activities.

I assume there are assumptions floating around in the ether, and will be revealed or clarified at some point. I’m not in a position to know, but the questions curious. Hmmm...

Expand full comment

Agree with you Steven! I’m hoping that the lens has NOT been taken off of the Secret Service who suddenly lost their text messages from Jan 6, - or the Capitol Police - some of whom may have been complicit with the Jan 6th rioters, - and of course, the Reps who provided the tours prior to Jan 6th!

I always wondered about the fellow that chased the Capitol police officer up the stairs toward the Senate. No home security cameras in the neighborhoods where those bombs were placed? Hope the prosecutions don't stop with the thousand while more thousands remain free and dangerous.

Yes, these are crucially important questions and concerns that must not be pushed out of our public awareness while MTG's 'fame' puts her shenanigans in the spotlight. We need to all raise our voices and ask these questions, relentlessly, until we get to the bottom of this. Thanks!

Steve, brilliant. MTG and Bobo are my two favorite MAGAt clowns to point at and laugh. Likely Bobo couldn’t inspire more than a few sentences of description and both sentences would address, bless her, how uninformed, vapid and dumb she is, although it would be nice to see a more extensive essay. Thanks for the historical perspective re 60 minutes, I’d forgotten the string of crazies and dictators that have been recorded there.
