I wrote yesterday in support of televising the trials in Federal court and continue to hold that opinion. However, I do not think that the jury should ever be shown. They are citizens doing their civic duty, but I can see how media could/will abuse them.

Expand full comment

Not only will they be doing their civic duty, but more than likely they are also risking their lives, and those of their families.

These MAGA MAFIOSOs are a dangerous, violent cult. They are part of the large, far sweeping (including sitting members of congress) trump crime syndicate, and proven domestic terrorists. Why do you think the courthouse in Alabama has been fortified by Fani Willis and several workers have been told to stay home and work remotely? Forget this to your peril!

Expand full comment

Georgia, not Alabama.

Expand full comment

Sad, but true.

Expand full comment

the media wouldn't be the only abusers of the jury!

Expand full comment

Abuse by the media (let's hypothetically call it "Fox News") would be the least of their concerns. If they get doxxed, they'd be targets for Trump's supporters.

Expand full comment

I agree with protecting the privacy of the jury. Undoubtedly they would be stalked and tormented.

Expand full comment

That's a very important suggestion! The jury must be protected.

Expand full comment

There’s no limit to what Trump’s stooges might do to jury members too! Do not show them‼️

Expand full comment

Couldn’t the jury be curtained (not sure of logistical challenges) so that none of the spectators (media included) would be able to see them? It seems especially appropriate for these type of trials!

Expand full comment

Ditto for the identities of all the witnesses, even those who were coconspirators and whose identities are already known to the general public.

Expand full comment

You'd think the problem with Bill Barr and the Muller report would be incentive enough to televise the court proceedings. It's a no brainer, except to those who don't want the truth revealed.

Celeste, While after seriously assessing risks and benefits I came down on the side of televising the trial, the matter was hardly “a no brainer.” Indeed, I continue to fret about the impact on witnesses and the jury, were it, also, to be viewed.

Expand full comment

It should not be on Court TV (or whatever it’s current equivalent is). It should be on C-Span, with no ridiculous commentary/editorializing. Plain, simple, truth.

Expand full comment

Agree, Martha! No nonsense, straight forward C-span or disciplined production such as Jan 6 Committee hearing.

Every time I hear we are in "unprecedented territory" I scream aloud DOESN'T MATTER! HE IS NOT SPECIAL!

Unprecedented means we do what we know how to do and, to me, that's treat him like any citizen accused of a crime.

An incredible opportunity for people watch and learn

1. What can we do to insist that cameras be allowed in the courtroom?

2. How can we stop our state governments from allowing traitors (Jan. 6 conspirators) on our election ballots?

3. What will put a stop to the media’s rampant abuse of truth and ‘news’ in their hideous corrupt greed banquet?

4. How do we get the Democratic Party to create a real think tank of brilliant, creative, historians, writers, directors, producers, linguists, psychologists, futurists, constitutional scholars, etc. We need a platform and a visual response through ads and programs to fight back.

I must say, my apprehension to this has been overcome by the sheer good sense of it..I can no longer be influenced by my concerns put forward in my vote under "Depends on the circumstances." All of the American people need to see these trials happen in real time..There is no other way..

I have met several (self identified) republicans who readily offered they had voted for trump, but after seeing the Jan 6th hearings televised, have become NEVER TRUMPERS. A few have actually said they have left the republican party! I don't believe this would have happened if the hearings had not been available to the public. WE HAVE A RIGHT TO KNOW!

I’m for court reporters only. Showboat lawyers will play to the crowd. Moments will be blown out of proportion.

“If the glove don’t fit, you must acquit.”

A gotcha moment.

Sound bites are already a problem.

The defendant is all about the media spin.

His lawyers are no different.

Perhaps I’m discounting the ability of the viewing audience, including me, to comprehend complex legal arguments.

Having said this, if televised, I will watch the coverage.

this is a valid point. But I think the lawyers of the defense would showboat with or without a televised audience.

Re: "We have entered uncharted territory with regard to the prosecution of a former president": could we please stop referring to Trump as a "former president" and start calling him what he, in fact, is: a "CURRENT CRIMINAL".

I don't give a crap what he was "formerly"; the only thing that matters is what he is NOW. — and, quite frankly, what he has been for the last 60 years.

It would be like saying, "Oh we can't prosecute that guy who just gunned down 26 people at a shopping mall because he's a former choirboy."

And BTW, I don't care what metrics you use, as far as I'm concerned, Trump never WAS president. How so?

Because "Presidents" are supposed to serve the needs of the people — and I mean ALL the people; not just guys and gals in stupid red hats — not use the office for the sole purpose of enriching themselves.

When a pandemic rears its ugly head, "presidents" are supposed to marshal every force at their disposal to minimize the disease's impact, not lie about it being little more than a "head cold", when they know full well how deadly it is (interview with Bob Woodward).

"Presidents" are supposed to nominate the best people available to help run the country, not one sleazeball or grifter after another: Scott Pruitt, Ryan Zinke, Tom Price, Betsy DeVos, Steven ("Don't call me 'Steve'") Mnuchin, Jeff Sessions, Mike Pompeo, Nikkii Haley, Mick Mulvaney, Steve Bannon, Jared Kushner, Kellyanne Conway, Sean Spicer, and ad infinitum.

"Presidents" don't pick on their predecessor for playing "too much golf" — saying THEY would never do that if they ascended to the Oval Office (https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=10156316566081509) — then wind up playing TWICE as much as their predecessor, and seeing no contradiction there: https://www.cnn.com/2020/05/25/politics/fact-check-trump-obama-golf/index.html.

So, no: since Trump did virtually nothing that a "president" would be expected to do, then, as far as I'm concerned, he never WAS "president".

Which is a SECOND reason to stop referring to him as a "former president".

And, quite honestly, if we don't soon start referring to him as "current INMATE Donald Trump", then this country is lost, since there will be absolutely nothing to stop a future "Trump" from doing everything Trump has done — and is continuing to do — to destroy this country.

Glad you liked it, Marsha.

Obviously, I could have gone on "forever" why Trump was never a "president" in the true sense of the word, but I think people get the idea.

BTW, hope you played the video where Trump goes on and on about how, if he got to the White House, he'd NEVER leave, because he'd be too busy working on behalf of the American people, the same way he worked on behalf of people trying to make their lives better (i.e., wealthier) with Trump University; the same way he worked to lift up the downtrodden with the Trump Foundation; the same way he tried to make people rich with ACN Videophones; and ad infinitum.

If ever there was a worse human being born in this world than Donald Trump — forget "President" — I wish someone would point him out to me.

I agree that people need to see it. The issue I have is: they see it, they’ve seen it, they know it already. The people who support him don’t care. That’s the real problem here. He convinces them that “insert today’s Trump enemy” is worse, with no proof. They require no proof from their cult leader to attack innocent people.

Lisa, you make a very good point here about the indoctrination of cult followers -that nothing at all will change their alliance with DJT. Given my personal experience with cults, I feel that DJT being exposed publicly in federal court will help to dismantle the MAGA-CULT. The MAGA-CULT followers need to SEE that their 'leader' is a criminal through a trial that shows this. Federal court is not reality tv. I feel that Trump will crumble before this judge and this needs to be televised. The consideration of the cult-factor here is important -keep talking!

I agree. Though most maga people will never change their opinions, I believe the proceedings need to be shown to them. Some may change their minds, but nevertheless, I for one would like to see him held to account for the nightmare he put the country through. It needs to be shown to ALL Americans.

The MAGA cult is not persuadable. They do not constitute a majority of voters. Trump cannot count on the voters who don't vote for Biden to vote for him. I wouldn't even try to persuade the MAGA cult to vote for anyone but Trump.

I think the hesitation I’ve heard about cameras is that witnesses will be televised opening them up to retaliation, etc. I haven’t heard anyone address this concern or say why it’s not important.

But the very people who need to see the trial will not watch it. On one of the Sunday politics shows yesterday the host showed a video where MAGA zealots were asked what was the reason for the latest indictment. Nobody had a clue. They answered stormy daniels, and E. Jean Caroll, although they didn’t know her name.

Among my MAGA acquaintances exactly zero have an actual working idea the reason for any of the indictments. But they sure can repeat the MAGA chants.

Diane, reading those anecdotes you described cause me to feel even more despondent about the Trump-loving Americans. Why don’t more of them read? Why don’t more of them care about our country enough to invest in a small amount of time and effort to get information? Arrrggh...

I really don't think watching or not watching will change MAGA minds. There are enough persuadable Republicans and independents who won't vote for Trump.

I think you’re miscalling this one; we need to move this country beyond Trump. As I said in my comment on your original post, “For eight years, Trump has manipulated the press and the populace to his advantage and whim. I don’t think it is in the country’s interest to give him yet another opportunity to mock our democracy and judicial system, and hold our attention hostage for the many months to come. We should treat him like any other defendant, go on about our lives, read the paper in the morning and let the system do its job. The American people and their press corps have shown themselves to be infinitely gullible and that the argument that seeing is believing is specious.”

You have a very good point as the 1/6 committee hearings were televised and I was amazed that anyone could still support Trump after seeing that!

Is this any way to deprogram hypnotized cult behavior? Perhaps what will cut through all the Foxtail noise will be the simple image of their Fearful Leader – slumped, silent and sweaty in the defendant's chair.

Expand full comment

Yes, the MAGA-CULT followers need to SEE their leader "slumped, silent and sweaty in the defendant's chair." and shut up over an over again by a no-BS judge. Federal court is not reality TV. Trump will crumble in Federal court and will be seen for the criminal he is. Thanks.
