Leonard and Sam: A Handmaid's Tale

ProPublica’s Andy Kroll reported this yesterday:

A spokesman for Leonard Leo, reached by Rolling Stone on Thursday, provided a statement from Leo, who wrote that he flies the flag because “it was the first flag of the navy of the US” and that it symbolizes “civic duty and philanthropy toward one’s country”; because he “like naval flags”; and because as a resident of Maine he “likes pine trees.”

Leonard Leo is a major player in Project 2025, and the reality of the matter is that the project to dismantle democracy, though hardly hidden, is mostly a secret from the American people.

For the record, the Appeal to Heaven flag is not the first flag of the United States Navy. This is:

The Appeal to Heaven flag predates Independence, and was flown from the top of colonial privateers as a statement of defiance against the policies that led to the Pine Tree Rebellion in New Hampshire. The pine tree depicted is an Eastern White Pine, and its first use as a political symbol was as a totem of reconciliation between major tribes of the Iroquois Confederation. Today, the flag has become synonymous with the cause that hijacked it: Christian nationalism. 

Make no mistake, the flags hoisted atop the Leo and Alito homesteads have meaning and the meaning is sinister. These flags are a declaration of hostility towards the United States of America where freedom means freedom for everyone. The flag isn’t provocative as it is routinely described in media accounts, but rather declarative. It is a declaration of war against pluralism and American democracy.

Leo and Alito don’t care what anyone thinks. They feel they are beyond reach and untouchable. They have the arrogance of the ascendant and victorious. It is as if the people working overtime to dismantle the rule of law, separation of church and state, elective democracy and racial and gender equality know something the rest of us don’t. Do they? 

American politics and culture are filled with trivialities that are routinely covered as revelations. This has numbed multitudes into a fog of confusion about what matters and what doesn’t. These flags matter a great deal, and anyone who says their flying above the homes of Alito and Leo is a small thing is as blind as they are corrupt, seditious and arrogant. 

There should only ever be one flag flying from the top of the mast in this country. That is the American flag. Alito and Leo have already raised another in its place. It is time to show them that you care.
