Steve, all I can say is “from your lips to god’s ears”. Okay, I can say more. I like your ideas for a way to broker a deal with the House by Democrats, especially option two. It would morally move the needle for good Democrats and the Republicans who can’t stand what has happened. It would certainly soothe my soul. That and a Trump indictment. You have much of value to add to the conversation in our country today and I look forward to hearing your voice.

“the most complex society in the history of human civilization” This struck me. A conservative acknowledging perhaps that “small, limited “ government and deregulation may not be appropriate in this highly complicated world. As an MD, I’ve always believed that like evolution on earth, our government, like our highly diversified brains, needed to expand to take on new challenges. Yes, there may be redundancies and waste, but shrinking or eliminating whole departments may be erroneous. Right now, the Republican congress is a nonfunctional area of white matter; Diseased and capable only of causing seizures on the body politic

I'm running out of popcorn watching this debacle from Portugal where my wife and I now live. The former deli owner McCarthy can't make a deal to get elected which bodes poorly for him actually being an effective speaker. Six votes. Six whiffs. If McCarthy had any pride, he'd withdraw.

He's more like George Santos than we know.

First, as a 77 year old citizen of Georgia, you hit the nail on the head about Newt!!! As the saying goes,”No Newt is good Newt!” I would call your ideas about what should happen in the House Speaker selection, “ the reemergence of sanity!” Retake the asylum from the inmates!

Leader Jeffries has maintained Speaker Pelosi’s iron discipline over his caucus. In all 6 votes he not only received the unanimous support from Dems, he received the most total votes.

Yes, this is a very dangerous time for national security. But I think Jeffries has an excellent negotiating position. If this goes on until Friday (and it likely will) -he should start looking to move into the Speaker’s office himself.

Newt is / was a philandering piece of shit. That moron being a political contributor on cable after the destruction he caused is pathetic. Kevin is beyond pathetic. Yes Hakeem should be the Speaker - if one party can't do something as basic as pick and vote for a leader, then they do not deserve / or merit that privilege. They have a country to run and al they talk about is investigation Hunter. To think they are getting paid to hang out in DC and not do their work, nor keep their Oath of Office.

They all need to be run out and replaced with serious people with enough intelligence to do the job

The two scenarios you present almost make me giddy to think either might happen.

I agree with almost everything with the exception of when the downfall of the GOP started. The Right’s reactionary momentum took hold during Ronald Reagan’s time in office & has continued on an extremist self-serving downward trajectory ever since. Trump just made them say the quiet part out loud, which was the sin that publicized McCarthy’s lack of fitness to be Speaker in 2015. I hope we are living through the supernova of the GOP star right now. How much more can we all take?

Expect the unexpected. Especially with Faux News and its pundits continuing to spew nonsense. “Political or military commentators, like astrologers, can survive almost any mistake, because their more devoted followers do not look to them for an appraisal of the facts but for the stimulation of nationalistic loyalties.” - George Orwell

Last night on the Bulwark's "Next Level," it was pointed out how the ten, now absent, House members who voted for impeachment probably would be sufficient to save McCarthy. Oh, the irony...

This morass in the Capitol these past days was precisely what it evolved into, in acceleration, dysfunctional behavior. I agree with you and respect fully your advice. Yes, there was a bridge to functionality and competence yesterday coming from President Joe Biden and his experience in bipartisanship. The presence of two politicians who did not see eye to eye since our President was voted to be the leader of the country was finally bridged for the advancement of democratic ideals and the need to function as a government for all. I am keen on your Scenario 2 to move ahead in a manner that voters deserve now in order to restore confidence in government. The House should have a Speaker in place today, a Speaker who will address the nation with the bipartisan will to move on. To move on there must by a drawing of lines. To move on is a repudiation of the seditionists. Coming from a Republican leader with conviction and clarity, Americans will listen and will be comforted by a return to normalcy to tackle the demands of our times, having also accelerated and must be addressed with competence. Thank you for the A, B, C and D. Vision, Steve.

A couple of points.

1. Newt Gingrich poisoned the well and now wonders why everyone in the GQP is sick. What a loathsome excuse for a human being.

2. I never want to hear or see another made-up bullshit media narrative about "Democrats in Disarray" again.

This feels like watching Wiley Coyote at his best, but only in cartoons do the characters rise to crash again. I'm waiting for Porky Pig to stutter, "That's all folks." It is good to hear sane suggestions, but I have zero confidence about any Republican alive being 3rd in line to the presidency. Traitors need to trade in their wadded underwear for sack cloth and ashes.

There must be at least a dozen republicans that realize handing the keys to Govt to the Freedom Caucus neuters them and any chance at reasonable govt work. They are the ones that need to find the courage to do the patriotic measure of forming a coalition govt this time around. 90% of the country will be grateful and it WILL start a new era of cooperative politics that reboots back to the original intention of Democracy - which is basically compromise.

Both scenarios makes me feel giddy! I wonder if the moderate Fred Upton’s leadership would embolden like-minded Rs to voice their true views instead of being cowered into submission by the crazies.
