they get 4 hours per weekday, but you didn't mention they get two hours each on Sat and Sunday, for selected re-run clips of the previous week. For the past couple of years, I like just about everyone on M J, except Joe and Mika. He rants and raves, and Mika has gotten just like him, only she whines. Kasie Hunt over at CNN has me as a new viewer. I was especially struck by Mika's comment, "Why would we do it? Well, why wouldn't we?" Gosh, maybe to be an honest voice amidst the chaos of trump 2.0? Guess not. You are right - Joe and Mika have lost all credibility.

Honest question since I never watch them: did they ever actually have credibility? Or was it only because they were for Trump, then against him, then for him again? They've been hypocrites, rating seeking, and dishonest all along. Yet another sad and pathetic example of what Prof Tim Snyder calls "obedience in advance".

I appreciate your honest question. I used to think they did have some credibility. Joe is a former GOP Representative in Congress - from about 30 years ago. I believe he had real conservative values: small government, balance the budget, strong foreign policy, anti-Russia. So when he started being against what the Republicans were doing 8 years, ago, I gave him some credit for integrity, and caring about the country. I think J and M would say they are not for him. But in today's world, if you are not against Trump, then you are for him. And yes, "obedience in advance." that line is getting a lot play time now, as well it should.

They are cardboard cutouts, that's all. And they have a huge bully pulpit and tons of money.

Michael Steele, Nicolle Wallace, and Lawrence O'Donnell are the best. Kaitlyn Collins is not too bad.

I think a lot Joe and Mika’s audience was drawn to the periodic rants Joe went on. He seemed genuinely passionate about his disdain for Trump and the Republicans who bowed to him.

Now they have put themselves in a very dangerous position. They should know Trump well enough to realize after all they have said about him, he has nothing but contempt for and their weakness. They will never get back on his good side.

Personally, I couldn't stand his rants - on and on and repeating himself. And, Katherine, I agree completely with you that trump will just hold them in contempt for giving in.

Expand full comment

Maybe they are just fearful. Being on television and making gobs of money don't automatically make people leaders with integrity.

I agree wholeheartedly and couldn’t believe my eyes and ears. “Know your value” and 50 over 50 seems so hollow now. I’m actually sad for them. Their legacy is shot.

I do not feel sorry for them one iota! Their level of their hypocrisy is beyond belief. Didn't they rail against those who made the same trek to Florida after Trump received the nomination this past spring? They deserve no sympathy. Or are they just stupid. Either way, I'm done with Morning Joe.

I stoped watching them 2 or 3 years ago, Joe’s rants drove me nuts, Mika was a me too, mostly empty. I missed their early in the day guests, who almost never show up in the evening. I time shift everything so I can fast forward through the insipid commercials, MSNBC is absolutely loaded with them. Their late afternoon evening line up is quite good so I attend to that most days. Lawrence is always on point but the rest of them have more good days than not, CNN has lost me as has the News Hour, and I wouldn’t watch faux news if you paid me unless it was with a 911 GT3 of my choice. The MSM sphere has been changing and will continue to for the foreseeable future, long term contracts that when signed made good business sense, will become liabilities. People can be told to ask their Dr for some disease they never heard of only so often before they turn off the TV. Joe and Mika caved, they had their fuck you money, so I don’t get it, if you think they live like your next door neighbors, you are wrong, unless as they say here in the south you live in very tall cotton.

Me too- sad for them, too. In this extraordinary time-- Steve just pointing out that the thing needed is courage--they had the opportunity. and instead they did something tawdry and ordinary.

My thoughts exactly. I wrote her and Forbes. Forbes needs to drop her. And Mika, you showed the opposite of what young women should learn- she showed, she has no value.

I'm retired but I still wake up early. My waking up around 4:30 am makes some people gasp. Be that as it may, every weekday morning after I wake up I would make a cup of tea and turn on the TV at 5AM to watch Morning Joe. After what I watched in disbelief Monday, my routine abruptly changed this morning. Oh, I'll still wake up early but I will never turn on Morning Joe again. The republican side of Congress is loaded with hypocrites, I don't need to subject myself to watching a show hosted by hypocrites! Ba-Bye Joe & Mika!

I too, saw it live, and I thought that I didn't hear right, because maybe I was still half asleep! Then I saw it repeated two hours later, and my heart sank. Not for Joe, but for Mika. I cried when she cried, for the women affected by the anti-abortion laws being passed across the country. When I saw her wearing black, the day after the election; I too wore black, as I did my duty as an election judge. What they did over the weekend, was just one more blow to the disaster that is Trump, the dictator! I am still saying "no" to kissing the ring of a dictator! Good bye, "Morning Joe"! Now I will be able to get some quality sleep!

I have watched the Morning Show for some years now, but today I didn't even bother with Way Too Early. I'll miss some of the guests Joe and Mika had, but I think I'll be better served taking those hours to read the waiting stack of a dozen books I haven't gotten to yet. Starting with a second pass at Snyder's "On Tyranny".

Good plan James. I'm buying subscriptions to independent journalist with the money I was donating to many Dems around the country. I volunteered for Michael Bloomberg in the '20 primaries, for Doug Jones on his run in AL, and for Joe//Kamala '24.... they all lost.

There has got to be a better way.

I'm doing the same thing. Buying new subscriptions, canceling old ones who kiss the ring.

I read you for your Isaiah framed truth and forthrightness, and of course, the remedy re the Morning show is simply not to watch it. But what is the remedy for the next two or four years? Please help your readers make sense of appropriate and possible actions. We all feel the outrage, but not the remedy.

That's what each and every one of us readers need to ask ourselves. The best idea I have heard so far is massive marches/nonviokent orotests on inauguration day. Elsewise, the rest of the world will think we dont give a chit, and they will be right.

Im sure there are subsequent actios that need to be taken in the name of resistence.

This is spot on. Absolute hypocrites those two are. As soon as I saw the video my jaw dropped and couldn't believe it. This is how it happens, this is how we lose the republic, bit by bit. Economic crashes and mass crises happen slowly, then all at once.

Fat Elvis is not as thoughtful as you, Steve. The genuflection of these two is just more proof to Trump that he slayed the Democratic dragon. He will give them nothing but the same contempt anyone with ethics would feel. She should be ashamed of herself because she certainly knows better given who her father was and what that family went through. He’s from Florida. Not much more to say about that. This is American 4R (Fourth Reich). And we ain’t seen nothing yet. I don’t know what madness prevailed in this country to elect this creep but smart money is waiting for him to screw up bigtime — and he always does. Then we will need to see about cleaning up the mess. And from the chaos that will inevitably endure perhaps we can rebuild the way we see a necessary. IOW some of us are waiting in the bushes.

Thank you, Steve. I used to watch Morning Joe, but no more. Disgusting.

Andy Borowitz wrote this on the Borowitz Report this morning. Love that guy.

"NEW YORK (The Borowitz Report)—MSNBC executives were in crisis mode on Tuesday amid reports that their morning program, “Morning Joe,” had lost its last five viewers.

News that the program’s co-hosts had paid homage to Donald J. Trump at Mar-a-Lago on Friday was the “last straw” for the fewer than a half dozen stalwarts who were still watching the show, the executives confirmed.

“We've reached out to those five people, and they’re not coming back,” one executive confirmed. “There are now more people sitting around Joe's roundtable than watching at home.”

MSNBC is reportedly mulling a number of moves to salvage the program, including rebranding it as “Trump & Friends.”

Steve - thank you for taking this on. Trust has been lost in buckets for sure. I hope their ratings fall into, and stay, in the toilet. Empty-Suit Nikki Haley trolling them is the chef's kiss. Pathetic.

Ol’ Joe has a very generous view of himself as a mover and shaker in journalism. Now that he has made the pilgrimage and kissed the ring, he has ceased being an independent voice and given in to toadyism. Just tuning him out, and letting Joe and Mika shout into the void, will be a just solution. Of course, MAGA may tune in on their leader’s command to keep the numbers up. Since we won’t be watching,we won’t care.

Look , we all have to consider certain economic realities , I get that. But at least in my mind ( lifetime Democrat ) Joe and Mika lost all of my respect. We can be kind to our friends who think different than us and support authoritarianism , but we can never waiver from opposing Trump, MAGA and what they are trying to do to this Country and Constitution. I expect they will be hired by FOX or CNN.

I watched their show a few times a several years ago. I couldn’t stand him and didn’t see the point of her. Never watched them again. I know so many people did watch, but I had no interest in watching them. Just me.

When I read about their meeting with Trump, my one word thought was - traitors.

Have read some comments from Dem Reps and found that I just can’t with them right now. My expectation is many of them will comply.

My tolerance is very low right now. I’m not watching any news. I have been a big fan of Deadline White House, but stopped even watching Nicolle after the election. It all seems like noise to me and I need quiet. I read news, some on BlueSky now and you Steve. But, limited. I expect that will change but for now it is a welcome relief.
