Steve, you may be right, but if this country chooses that pathological lunatic and evil and vile human being over anyone, it say a lot more about us than it does about her and Gov. Walz. Really. Really. I am frightened for our future. All I can hope for is if some of the people who would vote for him reap the whirlwind themselves like immigrants and more will certainly do. They will deserve it. How abjectly stupid and shallow can people be. He is clearly and objectively sick—in every way. Really. I keep praying some small subset who have voted for him before will stay home…………..

What a mess.

Amen. The American populace is fundamentally at fault here. Shouldn’t even be close.

You deserve what you vote for…it should not be close but, for example, we have such a stupid electorate that you have black men voting for a man that says Hispanics will take their “black” jobs. You have Hispanics who will be deported or at best second class citizens voting for Trump. You have Jill Stein who hopes at best to get 15% of the vote ( which she will take from Harris) still in the race.. to assure Trump wins? Then what will happen to Jill Stein’s woke liberals?

There seems no limits to the electorate stupidity voting against their own interests.

Otherwise this race would not be close.

People I talk to, informally, mostly just acquaintances, are not alarmed by him. And will vote for him. I find it depressing.

Mental health in this country has never been handled well at all! We ignore and avoid people with mental sickness. Trump is an example.

All the information people need is out there. If they want to vote this way, it’s not the fault of others like us who recognize the danger.

Yes. James Carville today pointed out that Trump has been open about his fascist intentions and therefore has a right to say that, by voting for him, the people approve of all this.

I have found the same result with my inquiries. Lots of young male voters too- coming from financial backgrounds.

Seems there is a failing in secondary US history and economic education at play- otherwise why would do many states have enacted book bans. This will not be a problem that is solved quickly. There is a deeply rooted and fundamental issue at the heart of all this.

I know two young men, college graduates within the past ten years. One went to a private college, the other went to a public college. Both majored in business type programs. From talking to them over time, their grasp of history, social studies, and literature ranges from non-existent to tenuous. Both are voting MAGA. I can see the correlation.

I agree. If Kamala Harris wants to save our country...and the world...from a Trump/Maga administration, she must attack Trump more aggressively, reminding the voting public of his base character, many scams, violent statements, lies, failure to properly handle the Covid epidemic, idiotic statements, and law-breaking, especially the danger posed by his stealing top secret government documents and bandying them about to impress his friends.

Steve, that is Axios. They've been carrying the water for Republicans for quite a while now. I wrote them off months ago; like Politico, they parrot the same old tired crap, always trying to naysay and drag down Democrats. It's like Republican zombies took over these media outlets.

Now, if it were The Guardian interviewing people like Northam or Schiff, and we were hearing the same theme, I would be worried. But Axios? I wouldn't wipe my shoe with their reporting these days, it would only add to the BS.

Andrew Sullivan's opinion of Harris and Walz is of no concern to me. He is a far right blowhard, a gay man who has consistently supported forces that smirk at who he is; he has written that in this election, "we have to choose between Donald Trump and Kamala Harris, the venal or the vacuous." Of Tim Walz he wrote at Kamala's first post-convention interview, "why was Walz there, grinning like an emotional support animal?

Right you are, Anthony. This is a man with AIDS who bragged about having multiple, unprotected sexual encounters which doubtless spread his contagious disease.

Expand full comment

I think that public comments in a substack is not the forum to discuss anyone’s sexual preferences, nor the disease they may or may not have. We may not like Sullivan’s views of Kamala Harris and her running mate, but he has a right to his opinion, as we all do on this platform; we should not foment undesirable feelings about someone’s sexual behavior but rather focus on their political arguments if we find them indefensible.

This is a slippery slope which might lead to unintended consequences.

Expand full comment

I was not discussing his sexual preferences; I was pointing out how pathetic it is that he supports a party with many prominient members who consider him disgusting.

I have no problem with anyone's sexuality as long as it involves choices made by consenting adults. As, I would assume, is the case with all members of the Warning. Condemnation of people for gay lifestyles comes, for the most part, from adherents of various fundamentalist religions and far right political parties.

No one should be ashamed of their sexuality; it is an ugly consequence of hateful religious indoctrination.

Anthony, thank you for trying to clarify your comment about Andrew Sullivan. When I reread your post, I still note the following comment : “ He is a far right blowhard, a gay man who has consistently supported forces that smirk at who he is;…”. If you had omitted your reference to a gay man etc, I would ask you: who in the hell cares with whom he associates and who he sleeps with, or what other folk think of him. Alas, your comment it is still there, identifying him as a gay person. Could we please agree to disagree. I often find your posts interesting and often give you a thumbs up or a like. I certainly wasn’t looking to start a war, just a comment on of what I read that had not much to do with Sullivan’s pedigree or how anyone else perceives him. In case you’re wondering, I’m heterosexual, have 2 daughters, 6 grandkids, a brother who is bisexual, one nephew who is gay, a cousin who has transitioned to a man and 2 cousins who died of aids.

Expand full comment

Carole, I don't think we are at war, but I do want to try to clarify my point. No one should be ashamed to be gay, bisexual, or transgender; no more so than one is ashamed to be heterosexual. If a person wishes to keep their sexuality a private matter, I respect that decision. Andrew Sullivan is gay; I don't hold him in contempt for that, nor does he appear to be ashamed. However, his openness about his sexual preferences and his association with a political party, including many very judgemental evangelicals who condemn gay people while pretending to love them, makes him a contemptible hypocrite in my eyes.

Perhaps you didn't notice that Sullivan called Harris "vacuous," which she certainly is not. He also called Walz an "emotional support animal." And, I disrespect him for that as well as his awful values and political views.

I didn’t comment on the attributes that you’ve outlined. If you found those comments offensive, by all means speak up. It certainly doesn’t mean that I condone either Sullivan’s or yours, so please do not put my lack of a response on either of your comments on the “she doesn’t GAS” side of the equation.

I’m not here to defend either the maniacal former guy or his running mate. I’m heartily behind a blue wave and I pray to God that you will win. I care about my family in the US, our friendship, our alliance and defense of the tumultuous future that awaits the US. I also care about how it will affect the fabric of your society, your economy and likely the global one, the alliances that you depend upon and the survival of those who are being verbally abused by a moronic has-been. This is what keeps me reading the substacks to which I subscribe. Thank you for your comment.

My point is that Sullivan is a hypocrite, sports often jaundiced and nasty judgment and is an arrogant SOB, based on several public encounters with him over a few decades. Of course, I am not trying to be reductive about his sexual behavior, which would garner the same ascription of morally scrofulous judgment from me if he were hereto, as well. But there does seem to be an uncanny connection between the morally repellent character of some of his key personal moral judgments and his political observations and assessments.

This is a sore spot for me. Steve has written incessantly about the danger of Trump and about the fact that Donald Trump is a fascist whose goal is to become dictator of the United States. (Thank you!) Trump’s goals and strategies are in full view for everyone to see and understand.

Democrats are whining about being lectured to, not being asked for their vote, etc. Saying they want to hear more about her policies. F@#%k that. For people who prefer to vote for their representatives and policies and have the right to vote preserved into the future, regardless of party, that should be the deciding factor and the message. Full stop.

For people who are not familiar enough with history and current affairs to understand what fascism and authoritarianism are and how they manifest in a society and think having a strongman wouldn’t be so bad as long as he is “their strongman,” the lessons of authoritarianism should be the message.

James Carville said Harris should be out every day with press conferences refuting the lies that Trump and his surrogates make up. I agree to some extent. It’s not a waste of time. There are people who do not want to know the truth. She can’t reach them. But she can demonstrate what actual leadership looks like, tell people what the government is doing for them, and drop the hammer on Trump’s lies and antics in the process.

Democrats' tendency to always turn to the feel-good messages is infuriating. They should try scaring the crap out people. Even many of the wealthiest Americans will lose “bigly” if Trump controls the levers of government. It’s not hard to make the case personal. What happens if you have a president who won’t deliver emergency aid to states governed by his political opponents? What happens when the free press is no longer free, we have a president who lies, and we cannot get factual information, even during a natural disaster. What happens when a woman becomes pregnant, miscarries, and not only can’t get a D&C, but goes to prison for having a miscarriage? What happens when you are dependent on farm aid, social security, Medicare, Medicaid, Supplemental Nutrition Program to help feed your family, and it is either slashed or goes away entirely? What happens when The US turns on our allies, aligns us with authoritarian regimes and our government is a) suckered by people much smarter than Trump, b) gets drawn into WWIII. Most of all, what happens if you decide Trump isn’t your guy anymore and it is too late? You lost your power to ever have a say in who will govern you because you voted for a dictator wannabe/ And his opponents are either in jail, in exile, or dead.

We had a family dinner yesterday, my sister in-law had just returned from western NC, the only signs she saw were for the insipid orange turd well down into northern GA. Here around Atlanta I have yet to see any, it makes me think we live in 2 different Americas. I'll be early voting on Tuesday, I know which America I want to live in. 5 decades ago I fought for this country, many think that was a mistake, I don't, it proved my character unlike anything I have done since. We will soon be learning about the character of our fellow Americans. We know that one of our two political parties has debased themselves into parroting an endless stream of lies, they know they are lies and they are just fine with it. It's easier to spout lies than to come up with programs that benefit all Americans, that might require some compromising, which the maggot base has no tolerance for, much less the insipid one who is their "fearless" leader. Fearless, my ass, he's a coward down to the core.

I respectfully disagree. Although Steve is preaching to the choir in this forum, one might hope it would stiffen a few people's spines to get out there and do what they can to prevent the catastrophe we all fear. Or arm them with some information to help persuade someone in their sphere why we need democracy and what we need to do to keep it. To the extent possible, we need to flood the zone. Online forums are just one small aspect of galvanizing people. If democrats were 1/10 as good at it as republicans, we probably wouldn't be in this position.

Once again you are right on target. Problem is that she and her campaign appear incapable of pivoting to a more aggressive strategy. The level of complacency is astounding. She seems not to actually believe the idea that Trump represents an existential threat to democracy and world peace.

Her limitations as a politician are on full display. Precisely why she NEVER would have won the nomination if Biden had dropped out before the start of the primaries as he should have.

Jeesuz Khrist on a Cracker everyone. It seems that Harris has to part the sea, walk on water, cure cancer and solve the middle east crisis to win the presidency and people will say she is not doing enough. Meanwhile Trump can call Harris a Retard, ask if the people want a black president or a white president, be a convicted felon and crap his pants, and the media and voters will tell you he is ahead in the polls or is going to win. All this shows is is that white males of privilege still hold power and that the plan to dumb down America has worked!

WTH!

If she falls short it is the fault of the American people.

The choice between a white man who was born with a gold spoon in his mouth and a woman of whatever sort; color or wealth, education or privilege, should be no contest, but the fact that it is lies in the hands of our male citizens, men who cannot stand the thought that a woman, any woman, let alone a woman of color, has the wit and ability to lead our nation is an absurdity that is harbored by people who have only known and accepted submission throughout their lives.

Mr Trump and his cohorts will bring about the downfall of the strongest and most free nation on earth. If elected we and most importantly our children together with the free world will rue the day this orange tinted bufoon entered the consciousness of our once free people

Kind of unfair, Steve, no...?...comparing a HOF orator to a promising rookie at the Big League podium?

I hear you about making this about Trump's character, actions, and the unparalleled level of incompetence and unfitness he brought as president and now as a candidate in the 2024 election--when--in truth--he should be behind bars (or at least fitted with an ankle brace, lol) for attempting to overthrow a duly elected government.

So, yeah, I could not agree more to make this about that odious creep.

But, I think she is and has referred to his incomprehensible negligence in the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic, his leading role in the insurrection, and his overall vileness and fear-mongering.
