Willie Nelson was born 90 years ago in the early days of the Great Depression, and during the first term of Franklin D. Roosevelt. America was segregated then, and would be for another 32 years. The Second World War hadn’t happened yet, and neither had the Korean, Vietnam, or “War on Terror.” The internet didn’t exist and Willie’s house in Abbott, Texas, didn’t have a phone. He was playing guitar by age seven, and leading a band by 10.
His voice is a revelation 80 years on. I couldn’t have been more excited to get to hear it again at his 90th birthday celebration concert. The extraordinary outpouring of musical genius and talent that took the stage at the Hollywood Bowl to honor Nelson was historic. It was a reminder about the power of music to lift people and inspire them. The crowd was joyous and celebratory. Each artist built on the last in a building crescendo of happiness that was as great a tribute to any man as there could ever be. It was a big event that got bigger as the evening went along — and it’s only half-way done.
Across the country another event was taking place. I’ve attended it many times over the years. It has become increasingly seamy, absurd and totemic as a symbol of a media, political and corporate corruption during this era of political crisis. I wondered if the media mandarins and political press understand how bad the look of the White House Correspondents’ dinner is? Do they understand how corrupt, fake and phony they look?
There was nothing funny about the Fox News jokes, or their presence at the dinner — even if President Biden did also attack those media outlets that use “lies told for profit and power.” Nothing is on the level. That is what the American people see.
There was a powerful and rousing moment in the Hollywood Bowl when Neil Young and Stephen Stills took the stage, and played the Buffalo Springfield classic, “For What it’s Worth (There’s Something Happening Here).” Can you hear it?
I thought I heard it last night. I will listen again tonight.
America is better than the mess in Washington, DC. The American people are better than what’s happening there.
The American people are the countrymen and women of Willie Nelson, and that is a good thing. When Snoop Dogg walked out on the stage and sat beside Willie, the world stopped for a moment. Willie said, “Hey, Snoop, come on out here and help me roll one up," They then sang “Roll Me Up and Smoke Me When I Die” together.
What an incredible night…and now I’m off for night two!
Your joy came straight through the screen, Steve.
Please make this one free. I would love to share it.
It is, Mom 😘!
❤️😘Back at Ya!
And let’s hear it for the extraordinary abilities of so many in their eighties, nineties, and above. Don’t write them off or diminish them.
Right On!
40 years ago I interview Ken Kesey and he referred to a small group of "magical people" -- those who could transcend their niche and become universalists. His prime example was Willie Nelson.
Thanks for this Steve! Made me happy and laugh for the first time today!
Okay, first of all...It is ADORABLE that your mother is messaging YOU here!!
Secondly, that was an amazing concert! So many artists collaborating, young and old... Love the video...
Finally, I have read (here and previously on Twitter) where you call out the WHCD as being corrupt and phony. I'm curious about your criticism, because what I saw was honor for deceased journalists, recognition of reporters being detained illegally in other countries, scholarships for would-be journalists, and multiple shout outs for the 1st amendment. They spotlighted people who have integrity and longevity in journalism which reassured me and hopefully is inspiring young journalists. Everyone in the room knew Fox is faux news and calling them out to their face in front of their peers seemed the most authentic. It really appeared that they were mostly celebrating the best of journalism. Maybe I am naive...
Respectfully, am I missing something?
Wish I could have been at the concert. Glad youre so happy!
But I confess I was very proud of Roy Wood, Jr last night. I disagree that the jokes weren’t funny. He made me laugh, and had one or two moments of genius. Plus his take downs of both the media and Clarence Thomas were excellent!
Steve this warmed my heart and soul with pure joy and gratitude… thank everything
That the event gave to Wilie he deserves to have respect and happiness 🌹marsha
A Texan worthy of well deserved accolades. God Bless and keep going for another ninety years
Willie Nelson is as original and authentic an American as there ever was and ever will be. Thanks for the great article. Willie Nelson is a national treasure!
Beautiful, beautiful. On The Road Again, life and love and music, what more can one ask for? Enjoy, dear Steve. And a happy, happy encounter with singers and musicians for a lasting memory.

I finally saw Willie love last June. Great concert featuring a musician for the ages.
Did you get a contact high? Willie is a treasure. And I love Buffalo Springfield.

Wow! Thank you -powerful singing, music and video!
Sometimes it's almost hard to believe that with all that weed smoking all these years, Willie's voice sounds as good as it did 50 years ago.
Joyous celebration 🎉
Terrific. I hear, “it”, in the arts.
Agree with Susan. Maybe Steve should take a look at what the Daily Richardson said about the WHCD.
Willie’s guitar is almost as amazing as he is. Willie has spent a lifetime making up for all the bad crap Texas excretes, like all the fabulous musicians from Texas have done giving us great music-T-Bone Walker, Janis Joplin,Albert Collins, SRV, Waylon Jennings, Roy Orbison, Buddy Holly, Beyoncé….
the list goes on and on.
Willie is my fav, i met him once in a restaurant - said hello, asked for an autograph, and he gave me a kiss on my check - i was ecstatic!!! needless to say. On the other note, the WHCD, I thought it way more interesting than those in the past - i thought Pres Biden was terrific, and Roy White Jr okay. Relax, Steve, it's not all bad.
Thanks for sharing Willie’s concert! What a delight. Thanks to you now I’ll be singing Buffalo Springfield today and pretending to be 16 again. With a smile on my face. :)
We would be better off if those folks in DC would smoke some Willie weed (an actual strand of medicinal marijuana) and chill out. Happy bday Willie 🎉🎊
Wonderful tribute to a beautiful person. Thanks. I Iove Willie Nelson and all he's about.
Thanks Steve! Music brings us together!
This is how it should be. Celebrations when someone is alive to participate. Were tickets affordable? Was it as accessible as his music?
And is there any way, dear Steve, to call out the schmucks who work in DC reluctantly without making it sound like they ARE DC when they have no stake in our lives here except to find ways to take our laws and rights away? It happens here by those who believe they are mighty and are not.
Lastly Rabbi Kushner (not I hope genetically linked to Jarred) died. Why bad things happen to good people but why still do good things happen to bad and evil
people I can’t manage.
Hi Steve, I didn’t watch it so can’t give my own opinion. However, here’s an alternative review from Time. Wondered what you thought.

Neil Young and Stephen Stills “For What it’s Worth” ... Priceless
Have never been a fan of country music, but I certainly can appreciate the longevity of Willie’s career and the joy he has brought to others. My husband had a vocal student years ago who was a Willie impersonator in Branson and came here to record a cover CD. Celled himself “Cherokee Willie” and he was quite a character! Man, did he love his Willie! He was even hoping to get married again so he could have as many wives as Willie did...
On the other subject, I am in the camp of some other commenters here. I watched Biden and Wood’s presentations and I thought the jokes were funny and Fox deserved everything they got. I also appreciated the support of the first amendment and the hopes of return for the journalists who are in captivity. I’m so glad Biden got some fire in his voice when calling out those who perpetuate lies and call it news. We need our President to do that! The fact is Steve, human beings don’t respond well to punishment. So as corrupt as the whole night might be, maybe a few good journalists were inspired by the uplifting words from the podium to do the right thing. If so, then it just might be worth it in the long run.
I read this immediately after reading Heather Cox Richardson’s post for today. I was taken aback by the contrast.
Lucky you!
Awww thanks for sharing that moment
Mom had an actual record for the turntable. Grew up with Willie.
