These Americans hold positions of profound responsibility that have been earned through excellence, dedication and sacrifice. They hold some of the most important jobs in the United States, unless you happen to be laying on an operating table this morning with your family in the room the next door. Then perhaps the most important job might be the surgeon or nurses who are about to operate. Their hands are likely to be a mosaic of colors. All that should matter is that they are steady and competent.
Across America, Black hands are on the controls of commercial aircraft, trains, ships, and the most sophisticated machinery on the planet. Black cheeks are pressed against microscopes looking into the frontiers of the future on the edge of scientific discovery.
Black men and women wearing perfect uniforms will greet new bus loads of recruits across America from every corner of the nation and every imaginable creed.
Black firemen and women will train to enter burning buildings and save lives. They won’t be looking for skin color.
Black cops will walk a beat. Black prosecutors will prosecute crime in front of Black judges and Black defense attorneys.
Black authors will write. Black professors will lecture. Black architects will design. Black engineers will imagine and build. Black farmers and ranchers feed America.
Donald Trump has always been a stone-cold racist. His legacy of racial animus extends back 50 years and fills volumes. His language and speech have always been degrading, dehumanizing and insulting.
Trump is under pressure and losing. The racial animus will increase. The hideousness of what all this is will be fully revealed with such brilliant intensity that even the most blind amongst us will see clearly how much hate there is bubbling beneath the MAGA base. Remember, it can only be defeated by love and an appeal for better. In the end, the idea of “New Trump” lasted about as long as New Coke. Thankfully, the videos of a tear-stricken Scott Jennings on CNN proclaiming Trump reborn, compassionate, loving and caring for all the people is forever.
We live in an age of dishonest fools and cynical panderers, but Trump is a true North Star. He is a point of exceptional rottenness that never dims, lessens, or whose stench abates. Sadly, we will have 94 more days of filth ahead.
Trump, more than anything else, is a man of betrayal. He has betrayed his oath, his country, and the historic legacy of his party. In the end, through his many disgraces, he proved James Garfield wrong about the Republican Party. Here is what President Garfield said:
Gentlemen, ideas outlive men; ideas outlive all earthly things. You who fought in the war for the Union fought for immortal ideas, and by their might you crowned the war with victory. [Great applause.] But victory was worth nothing except for the truths that were under it, in it, and above it. We meet tonight as comrades to stand guard around the sacred truths for which we fought. [Loud and prolonged cheers.] And while we have life to meet and grasp the hand of a comrade, we will stand by the great truths of the war. ["Good," "good," and loud cheers.] Many convictions have sunk so deep into our hearts that we can never forget them. Think of the elevating spirit of the war itself. We gathered the boys from all our farms and shops and stores and schools and homes, from all over the Republic. They went forth unknown to fame, but returned enrolled on the roster of immortal heroes. [Great applause.] They went in the spirit of the soldiers of Henry at Agincourt, of whom he said:
"For he today that sheds his blood with me,
Shall be my brother; be he ne'er so vile,
This day shall gentle his condition."And it did gentle the condition and elevate the heart of every worthy soldier who fought for the Union, [applause,] and he shall be our brother forevermore. Another thing we will remember: we will remember our allies who fought with us. Soon after the great struggle began, we looked behind the army of white rebels, and saw 4,000,000 of black people condemned to toil as slaves for our enemies; and we found that the hearts of these 4,000,000 were God-inspired with the spirit of Liberty, and that they were all our friends. [Applause.] We have seen the white men betray the flag and fight to kill the Union; but in all that long, dreary war we never saw a traitor in a black skin. [Great cheers.] Our comrades escaping from the starvation of prison, fleeing to our lines by the light of the North star, never feared to enter the black man's cabin and ask for bread. ["Good, good," "That's so," and loud cheers.] In all that period of suffering and danger, no Union soldier was ever betrayed by a black man or woman. [Applause.] And now that we have made them free, so long as we live we will stand by these black allies. [Renewed applause.] We will stand by them until the sun of liberty, fixed in the firmament of our Constitution, shall shine with equal ray upon every man, black or white, throughout the Union. [Cheers.] Fellow-citizens, fellow-soldiers, in this there is the beneficence of eternal justice, and by it we will stand forever. [Great applause.] A poet has said that in individual life we rise, "On stepping-stones of our dead selves to higher things," and the Republic rises on the glorious achievements of its dead and living heroes to a higher and nobler national life. [Applause.] We must stand guard over our past as soldiers, and over our country as the common heritage of all. [Applause.]
Recently, the MAGA House that desires to be the House of Trump voted to reestablish the Confederate memorial in Arlington National Cemetery where the enslaved mammy holds his child, and his slave faithfully follows him off to war to destroy the United States of America.
The cause of the Confederacy has never quite extinguished. It has been reborn many times from the Ku Klux Klan of the 1870s, 1920s, the Bund, America First, Jim Crow, and now MAGA.
Trump revealed himself fully at yesterday’s National Association of Black Journalists annual convention. He withered. He decomposed. It was the journalistic equivalent of the melting scene from “Raiders of the Lost Ark.” Astonishing isn’t the right word, but it fits. Truly.
Good Americans will reject the malice of bad Americans — of which there are plenty.
One way to know the difference between the good and bad ones is to measure how many are genuflecting towards America’s only orange person.
If we seek to bring back discrimination that seems like the right color to me.
It's been refreshing to view the recent Kamala Harris rallies. It was a pleasant reminder of the past with the politics of hope, new frontiers, and joy. Do we really want to return to four years of fake news, lies, hatefulness, and utter chaos? I found the Trump administration exhausting, every day filled with a new crisis, real or projected. Let's not go back.
The Garfield speech was amazing. Thank you so much for sharing that with us.
