I stopped using Twitter some time ago and have never used Instagram. If you include a link to either of these I don’t go there. Also, I don’t subscribe to NYT or others.. we are retire.... more and more of our money goes into medical expenses and basic groceries .... we continue to include The Warning and Civil Discourse in our budget. The volume and quality of your posts and Joyce Vance’s are GREATLY appreciated!
I’m sure glad someone is like I am. I was homeless for over a month before my son put me up in this place I’m in now. I can afford it, my meds, doctor bills, and a few groceries. That’s it. I did sign Ilya fir a few Substack subscriptions though, only because they set it where you have to pay to respond. Not really fair for those of us who are on limited fixed incomes.
I'm sorry to hear about your predicament (though thrilled that you have now found a home), and am so very grateful for your support. I know that not everyone is in a position to pay, and that's why I make the majority of my content free, with the hopes that those who are able to support my writing with a paid subscription will do so, allowing me to devote the time, effort and costs associated with doing daily essays and video commentary. The reason for only allowing paid subscribers to comment is that it ensures that trolls don't pollute the civil dialogue that takes place within The Warning community -- something that I'm constantly faced with on my Twitter handle.
Thanks, Steve for the reply. I don’t use Twitter, so no need if me bothering with that. Especially in the Elon the Moron owns it. And, you have me, until my money runs out, but I’ll still read and listen even if not able to comment!
Why not offer discounts to people on Medicaid and/or SNAP? Amazon does. (I was hoping the WAPO would buy out some struggling local papers to help keep them going. Wasn't that naive, considering how Bezos just killed off important sections of his paper rather than--oh, I don't know--PUBLICIZE THEM!) Substack also could offer discounts for subscribing to multiple newsletters. There are so many worthy publications, and people's resources aren't infinite.
I wasn’t aware of that. I’m going to find out about this, to see if this is something I can offer to the community. Thanks for bringing it to my attention.
Janet, I swear to you if I didn’t have all my friends, such as yourself, here on Substack I’d go stark raving mad.
It’s been really, really, tough this last year. And with what my youngest daughter just pulled on me makes it even rougher. Her getting evicted leaving me high and dry, not to mention broke (after I had been giving her the rent and bill money each month), and now I’m stuck with her past rent bill for the house we were living in. That’s over $4,700 I just learned yesterday! She has screwed me bad!
Janet, you are a wonderful woman, and I appreciate it. If I get in a tight again, I’ll let you know. I dang sure don’t like sleeping under a wet bridge!
I’m thrilled Substack exists as I don’t do “social media” anymore. I’m on Instagram for my Grandkids but all my news comes from various Substack and a select few newspapers. If Twitter disappeared tomorrow I think the world would go on, the sun would rise and we might even be a better place for it.
Yesterday I was telling my followers on Instagram that we need to support writers on substack if we don’t want to lose the ability to hear the truth. I will share todays article to let them know what is happening on Twitter. I rarely go there anymore because the algorithm only lets me see people on the right. I don’t even follow those people. This is a new way to support freedom of the press in my opinion. I still read newspapers as well. But we need to hear a variety of voices to keep our democracy strong.
I, too, followed Steve on Twitter back in the day. The change to Substack has been an upgrade, allowing for a more contemplative reading experience. Thank you for keeping our heads screwed on right.
Musk only loves money and power. He is a Putin and Orban compatriot and thinks of himself as an Oligarch along with Ruppert Murdoch. He doesn't care for the competition in a free marketplace. Unfortunately, he doesn't think paying back the system for all the start up help he was given by the government which propped up his business before it took off.
By the way, I quit using Twitter over 10 years ago. Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, all of them. Then came Substack! I’ll never leave it as long as they keep the platform as it is now.
I just wished that more writers realized some of us are on really tight fixed incomes. If you lived homeless under a bridge for a month or so, you’d appreciate what I’m asking.
Well, Steve, first off I'm not surprised to see fascist Musk make this move. He's a disgrace to freedom and open platforms. Second, and most importantly, I'm thankful that you are encouraging those of us who are subscribers to share. Admittedly, I've been doing that all along and hope that I've influenced some others to join in. Enjoy the weekend, there will be rough days ahead.
You have no idea how grateful I am for you, and all of Substack writers/readers. Without you folks this lonely crippled down old man would go completely insane.
Elon Musk is a “puss”! He’s nothing more than a rich windbag throwing his money around and doing nothing but throwing it away. He needs to contact me. I can tell him a few organizations, and people, that can sure use his money to do some good with.
Substacks has become a very important part of my day. I don’t have any use for Twitter and not much for Elon Musk. Thanks for your sharing and work.
Agreed! Substack is such a deeper, better place for conversations, discussions, etc.
And we are deeply grateful for You! Miss your television appearances and so very thankful to experience your wisdom on this platform. Twitter Who?
And if you want to see Steve on TV subscribe to his YouTube channel! 📺👏🏼👏🏼
I’d like to see him with Nicolle again.

Thank you so much, Margie. That means alot to me.
Steve
To clarify, I also read Heather Cox Richardson, Robert Hubbell, and George Takei. I just don’t subscribe.

Good idea.

I sure hope so. This loneliness is getting to me. I never believed I’d end up in this shape. I swear I didn’t.
Anyway, I sure hope when you go to NC you can swing through Albany, GA. That’s where I am now. Maybe by then I’ll have a little furniture!
Janet, I swear to you if I didn’t have all my friends, such as yourself, here on Substack I’d go stark raving mad.

You also. I wish I was closer to you, or out there in CO. I’d love to be living in the snow, and mountains!

Steve, I'm a paid subscriber of your Substack and others. I say, Go to Hell, Musk.

Thank you for spreading the message, Jude.
Steve
Proud to be a paid subscriber. Elon Musk and his right wing echo chamber can go #%$&! themselves.
Proud to have you in this community, Ian.
Steve
So honoured by your comment, Mr. Schmidt!
All of that, yes indeed
And the new verification of accounts schemes that I do not understand.
Bec of my work I use Twitter limitedly. And when one lives in DC, it’s a good way to noodge our elected officials.
Not rationalizing. I think.
I, too, followed Steve on Twitter back in the day. The change to Substack has been an upgrade, allowing for a more contemplative reading experience. Thank you for keeping our heads screwed on right.
So happy to hear that you feel that way, Krysta!

Elon, even that seems too petty for you
Nah. Elon has no bottom.

I think a complete break with Twitter for all responsible journalists is a great idea.
Very disappointed with Twitter monopoly.
Just shared on twit! Steve miss seeing you on tv , but enjoy your writing. So glad your here.
