What the decimated Supreme Court did to us yesterday is F*cking horrific - Is anyone going to organize a massive protest? I’m 70 and just finished chemo and it’s not an undertaking for me, but we desperately need some groups who care about democracy enough to get us off our butts. Black Lives Matter was a good example of what should be happening now. We need to respond en masse to these farcical, newly created rules fit for a King that are unconstitutional led by a far right runaway Supreme Court. If we start holding protests, I for one, will drag myself there repeatedly, if it’s the last thing I do.

Sarah, I feel the same way, yet we are in the same boat. My next Chemo is July 12th but I still found myself pricing flights to Washington D.C. last night. The pink hat marches - those I could do- should pale compared to the response mounted against this extremist Court and Trumpism. God help us to NOT lose our country to these radicals.

I'm also 70 and struggling with health (heart problems). The politics of this time and place do not help. There are a lot of old geezers like us on this substack. How to get young people engaged and involved is paramount, and I don't have a clue how to do that. I have 2 grandchildren - my granddaughter will vote and she'll vote blue but my grandson told me the other day he doesn't want anything to do with any election. He's disappointed that Kanye West isn't on any ticket. My God...

My own story is that I have 44 years of continuous sobriety and I have been blessed as a result. I accomplished this by going to those rooms and learning how to live. I am more mindful of the 11th step as an important touchstone in these trying times: "Sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God as we understood Him, praying only for knowledge of His will for us and the power to carry that out."

Blessings to all.

Assuming Biden remains the nominee, the most important thing he can do is "take the wind" out of Trump's "sails". And this is one way he can do that:

My opponent says he wants to be a dictator—but only for one day. Isn’t that kind of like a woman saying she wants to be pregnant—but only for one day?

Well, here’s my response: you want a dictator? You want someone who sends his militias into poor neighborhoods and shoots people someone said were dealing in drugs, like Duterte did in the Philippines? I can do that. You don’t have to vote for a guy who stiffed everyone who enrolled in his university, and then wound up having to lay out $25 million to compensate those people.

You want someone who pushes his critics out of 6th-floor windows, like Putin in Russia? I can do that. You don’t have to vote for a guy who was fined $2 million for taking in people’s money for his foundation and then spending it all on himself.

You want someone who throws his opponents out of helicopters, like Pinochet in Chile? I can do that. You don’t have to vote for a convicted rapist.

You want someone who builds concentration camps for illegal immigrants and then deports 11 million of them? I can do that—as long as you’re OK paying 20 dollars a pound for strawberries and grapes and tomatoes.

You want someone who tells you he’s going to build a wall, then doesn’t, and tells you Mexico will be paying for it, which they never would have? I can do that. You don’t have to vote for a guy who was sleeping with a porn star while his wife was nursing their baby.

You want someone who stiffs his contractors, or who makes their lives so miserable they settle for pennies on the dollar? I can do that. You don’t have to vote for a guy who was fined over 400 million dollars for defrauding the State of New York.

Look, I could go on and on like this, but you get the point:

If that’s what you want—a dictator—just so you might be able to pay 10 cents less for a dozen eggs and 20 cents less for a gallon of gas, then I can do that! You don’t have to vote for someone who has shown, his whole life, that he cares about one person and one person only—himself—even though he says he cares about you, says he’ll be your “retribution”—retribution for what: the Affordable Care Act, that has given millions of people health insurance they otherwise wouldn’t have; for the Infrastructure bill that’s rebuilding the roads you travel on, the bridges you cross; for bringing millions of manufacturing jobs back to America; for overseeing record low unemployment? Retribution for that?!

But OK: if that’s what you want, I can give it to you. Just let me know by November 5th.

Look, folks, I get it: you like to be entertained, and my opponent is far more entertaining than me. Heck, he was a reality TV star for 14 years; how you gonna top that?!

Just one question: with about 10,000 TV channels, and at least 50 different ways of getting entertained on the internet, isn’t there at least one other place you can go to for your entertainment the next 4 years? Does it have to be from the Oval Office every day?

And yes, I’m old. But my ideas aren’t; my policies aren’t. The people I surround myself with aren’t. When you vote for me, you’re voting for them—and, let’s be honest, you’re voting against a guy who surrounds himself with people who seem to spend a lot more time in court and in jail than they do building homes for our less-fortunate neighbors!

So, that’s your choice: if you want a dictator, I’m your guy! But if you want someone who cares about you, who has been working tirelessly for you, who cares about this country, then…I’m your guy!

Either way, just let me know by November 5th.

Love it! If only Joe knew how to communicate, David. I’ve said all along, we need a pivot that will wake this country the hell up.

Glad you like the screed.

Sometimes I wonder if I'm the only one on Earth who is reminded of Mark Antony's speech at Caesar's funeral, where Antony takes the wind out of all the plotters' sails by saying, "I come to bury Caesar, not to praise him," and then spends the next five minutes PRAISING him, thereby turning the mob AGAINST the plotters.

I mean, why learn things like that in school if you're not bright enough to use them when appropriate?

Over and over again: "You want someone who will deport 11 million immigrants? Well, I can do that! You don't have to vote for the most despicable human on Earth to get that done." and ad infinitum. Completely pulls the rug out from under Trump.

And, if it makes even 1% of the voting public take a step back and wake up to what another Trump term would be like—especially in light of the Supreme Court's immunity ruling—then that might be all it would take to put Biden (or whoever replaces him) over the top.

I agree. I had a long talk with my 17-year-old son who will be graduating next year from high school with top honors. He asked me the most profound question of all why is it that people don’t seem to understand or care? What’s going on? I tried to explain to him that there are people who feel as though they have been cast aside and have so much hate and anger, and listen to nothing but propaganda. it is difficult to explain what is happening to my son and for a young man who will be graduating next year who will have multiple opportunities because of how hard he’s worked at school. He is now asking me if he should avoid attending a university in a red state. I do believe our education system has failed this country. That’s the only thing I can think of. I just don’t get it. I love your writing!

Re your son's question: "Why is that people don't seem to understand or care?": Not sure what date it was that corporations and governments discovered that it's easier to control uneducated people than it is to control the other kind, but that was the first day of a downward spiral into complete (and apparently blissful) idiocracy.

Need examples?

No problem: just look at the people standing behind Trump at one of his rallies.

I don't think I've ever felt so powerless in my life. I organized and marched to help end the war in Viet Nam. As daunting as that was, this is a far steeper mountain to climb. The corrupt Supreme Court's action has changed who we are at a fundamental level. And they're not done. Biden is honorable and will not take advantage of his new power. Trump will, with glee. Say what you will about Biden, a vote for anyone other than him is a vote for all that is outlined in Project 2025, which is a step-wise plan to create and maintain a fascist state. It will change our lives forever.

The economy is robust, unemployment is low. People are more concerned about inflation and the price of bread than in a woman’s right to choose. Uber-rich Repub donors fill Donald’s pockets in return for tax breaks and impotent regulations.

Thanks, Steve, for posting those Founders' august quotes celebrating America's governmental independence and its critical reliance on independence of thought and human vision. The Founders were mostly elitists in terms of intellect and education, yet we owe them -- and ourselves -- renewed and forever-lasting kudos for recognizing that wisdom, honor and virtue secured the institutional foundation of the new republic and would guide its survival.

How far down the the rabbit hole of know-nothingism, sociopathy and self-centered power-mongering fascist MAGA Trumpism has taken our beloved republic. Its beacon of freedom has been devastatingly dimmed and now requires a massive energy burst of patriotic fervor to counter the darkness it has cast over the American landscape.

Dear DNC: My enmity and disgust for your organization grows by the hour. For nine years, we’ve been withstanding the lies and insanity from one guy, and after all that time, your response is to put up on the stage last week, what? A cardboard cutout of an octogenarian who couldn’t even finish his own sentence. I get it, you love Biden; I love Biden. But we’re the choir; you don’t need to preach to me. Most of middle America doesn’t trust that Biden’s up to the task. And you proved them right. We knew that this was an important election, so we went along with you guys. But in the past 48 hours we have understood something else: This isn’t like any other election. This is an election for the new ‘Unitary Executive.’ The stakes cannot be higher. Yet, you – the DNC leadership – continue to play as if this is some campaign out of the 1970s, where esteemed gentlemen chuckle on stage over lines they were fed from their Advisors. You’ve shielded this President from airtime, from the public, from the press, and from the electorate. Why? Because you knew he’d act just like he did last week on the Debate stage. If you were watching, you saw Gov. Gavin Newsome appear after the debate on the MSNBC set with Alex Wagner. He was clear, concise, and commanding. He answered actual questions put to him from another human. He showed everything we needed in 45 seconds. DJT would not have lasted 3 minutes on a debate stage with Newsome. So, who do I blame? Who do I blame when DJT is still President of the United States in 2030? I blame Biden Advisor Ron Klain. Who do I blame when I’m not Christian enough for Texan AG Ken Paxton? I’ll blame Biden Advisor Mike Donilon. Who do I blame when I’m not sufficiently anti-gay for Florida Gov. DeSantis? I’ll blame DNC Chair Jaime Harrison. Who do I blame when my sister in Ohio has to request permission for birth control permission from Jim Jordan? I’ll blame Jill Biden. Enough! Get someone in the campaign who can campaign and prove to America that the Democratic Party cares about people, not politicians.

Gavin Newsom is way too liberal for the swing states. No other person is going to be able to raise the money that Biden's campaign has (which can not be transferred, by the way). It is best to stick with Biden and then if he goes down hill the vice president can take over, if need be. It would be stupid to change horses in the middle of the stream at this point.

Give me a break, just because Joe had one bad night you are ready to abandon him, when he had a cold and jet lag. Would you do that to your favorite sports team if they lost one game?

If you’re not up for phone banking or knocking on doors, the least we can do besides donations, is to write postcards to voters in swing states. The postcards are preprinted so all you need to do is write one non partisan sentence and lick a stamp. You can do this from the comfort of your living room. The postcards will be mailed in October. So, take a big breath, and let’s defeat the evil 👿 despicable lying MAGA party. Vote BLUE 💪🇺🇸💙

Let tyranny ring from sea to dirty sea and let the flag fly for ever more upside down. We are no longer that shining example on the hill. We have tumbled down like Jack and Jill. We are no longer a united nation. Democracy no longer exists where the majority rules and protects the rights of everyone. We are now governed by the minority where it is their way or they will destroy everything no matter the consequences. The political court has said as much that Republicans are above the law and will not be held accountable. Trump is their king and the Republican billionaires are the new Oligarchs. There is nothing that can stop them now because we are now playing by their rules with the deck stacked against all who has a different view. There are no more paths forward without their permission. We have become Russia overnight and should fly the Russian flag over the capitol. This court has been corrupted and this land is no longer my land. There are no hymns to be sung or glory to be remembered. Our democracy has failed and we are about to relive the worst nightmares of the 19th and 20th centuries. Mankind has thrown in the white towel there are only holdouts left to fight the battle. Insurgency is our only tool left to fight the machine of the corruption. You better bow low enough so not to show dissention or you too will be subject to subjugation. Good bye the land I love, you will always live on in my heart but without the rule of law to guide you, you will perish in civil war. The lights are dimming on your lady in the harbour. She shows her rusted skirts and no longer welcomes the tired and oppressed. Her candle no longer beckons and her shoulders are bent in despair. Her back is tired with age and her belly is bulging with decay. She has no refuge and looks to other shores for a place to hide. That is the what the supremely stupid Court has ruled. God has left the building leaving only commandments not to guide us but to be used as a way to control us.

Where are the patriots, where have they gone. Have they also given into chaos or will they rise again and fight back. I am too old to pick up a gun but I can still cast a vote. I can support those who are not giving up. Until my last breath I will not submit. I will not conform. They may have won the day but the battle is just beginning. We must find a way to repair the declaration of independence and guard the Constitution from further destruction. We can no longer count on the courts so it is up to individuals to remember what the Constitution is supposed to stand for.
