Members of the media knew then--and know now--exactly what they are doing. The former head of CBS admitted Trump may be bad for the country but he’s good for CBS.

While a few have definitely learned their lesson and appreciate the danger he poses, most do not or just don’t seem to care. He’s fun! Exciting! Unpredictable! If the worst comes to pass, many of them won’t be in danger; they will go along to get along. Look at how the NYT sanitized his comments to make him sound coherent while he was in the Oval, and refused (and still does) to call a lie a lie.

Worse, they do their damndest to needle Dems and especially Joe Biden and Kamala Harris. We constantly see stories about Trump’s popularity with his base, yet all we get are negative stories about Biden’s polling, which includes all the GOP who hate him yet skips over his widespread popularity (stronger and wider than Trump’s) among the Dem base.

Steve is correct to call them out and his voice adds to the growing chorus of people taking our political journalists and their organization to task.

Florida’s decision to curtail teaching Shakespeare has nothing to do with sexual overtones but an awful lot to do with the stirring words reminding us of loyalty, valor, courage and unity. As I read your essay I could hear St Crispian’s Day and Henry’s call to rally his troops

I agree, Tapper is wrong. The media created this beast we call MAGA and it’s leader DJT. Too easy to report on fires, not as easy to report on policies. Yes we all have our part to play to in this conflict to retain our democracy We are all gentles in this conflict

An autocratic freak show, funhouse mirrors, losing is a win, Trump world must be defeated!

Trump, the media...all of it, are willing participants in this fiasco and must be called out for their involvement, making billions on this freak show, while our Democracy is on the line. every negative derogatory adjective has already been applied to trump and his incessant need to be the center of attention.

Just stop covering him. His little band of obsessed ass kissers can keep on giving them their money and attending his 'rallies' to here the fat man cry about being denied his 1st amendment rights. but as clearly explained, his willful attempt to overthrow the election has nothing to do with those 'rights'. and everything to do with our rights as citizens to cast a ballot and have it be counted.

Can't wait for flamin' hot Cheeto to mouth off and found in contempt and off to jail for violating the protective order. how much you wanna bet he doesn't get spanked?

Can you imagine what our lives would be like without continuing to be saturated in orange muck?! I honestly believe that we would soon come to our senses as a nation. As you say, his cult could continue on, but without continuing to pour gas on the fire, some would become bored and wander off to the next shiny object.

I certainly agree with your media comments. It's been nothing except Trump for weeks, maybe months. What should happen at CNN at least is to note either before or after a piece on Trump commenting about this or that, whether what he just said is true or a lie. Do it every time or don't publish that speech. Every media organization must do something like this. Don't just leave his comments as is, do something about the lies spreading without attempting to point out the Truth of his comments. Also, by the way, I did not know about Guilfoyle. Now I do. I hope Trump Jr. is happy with her. Maybe he even deserves her. Best of luck Jr.!

I agree, even though I haven’t watched television for years, and thus have spared myself the avalanches of Trumpist news that most of America has been marinated in since 2015. But even print media is often putty in the hands of the Great Manipulator. Every time the Orange Crybaby appears in the headlines on the front pages after one of his rallies or speeches, the media is boosting him.

Trump's attack on Fani Willis is outrageous. Any time he starts a sentence with "People say...", you know that a vicious self-serving lie will follow. And then the media propagates the lie and some of his base will just lap it up. Everything he is doing to delegitimize her and her case against him suggests he is terrified of her. Clearly she has a recurring role in his worst nightmares. When Trump and Putin came to power both their countries were on the path to better things for sure. Now as they are coming to the end of the road, Russia is heading to the abyss and Trump has inflicted a deep wound on the American system with Putin’s help. Since both men are egoistic narcissists, they will not bend to pressure and will pursue their intentions to the end of the earth at other people’s expense. Most important to be resolute and outlast the tyrants if we want to save our future. Jack Smith is definitely the right man and Fani Willis absolutely will crush the dream of a despot.

"Amendment XIV

Rights Guaranteed, Privileges and Immunities of Citizenship, due process and equal protection.

Section 3. No person shall be a Senator or Representative in Congress, or elector of President and Vice President, or hold any office, civil or military, under the United States, or under any State, who, having previously taken an oath, as a member of Congress, or as an officer of the United States, or as a member of any State legislature, or as an executive or judicial officer of any State, to support the Constitution of the United States, shall have engaged in insurrection or rebellion against the same, or given aid or comfort to the enemies thereof. But Congress may by a vote of two-thirds of each House, remove such disability.”

I have read and reread the Section 3 of 14th Amend of our Constitution more times than I can count..I have also watched, read, listened accountings of the remarks and conduct of the 45 President of The United States, related to January 6th 2021..

I keep coming up with the same conclusions..He has without a doubt acted in violation of the provisions of this language..Take a look for yourself beginning here..

https://morningshots.thebulwark.com/p/does-the-constitution-disqualify?r=ct95&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web

There is no longer any question in my mind and as you will see I am by far not alone in this belief.. And what I mean by not alone is I am joined in particular by learned, conservative Constitutional scholars that have determined that he is completely disqualified from holding any office in our government again. It is a done deal..

Thank you, Sam Urdank, for posting this part of the 14th Amendment in these comments. I’m greatly heartened by this news, but I’m also puzzled why it has taken so long to ferret out the Constitutional block that so many of us felt OUGHT to be there. TG we didn’t get the red tsunami in Congress last fall. Let’s hope the law will be enforced.

Steve, perhaps you have some insight as to how something like this can get its footing..Where to send, how to craft it..To my knowledge, no one is more experienced in this area than you..

Someone mentioned that you have 65,000 or so subscribers..If this effort were to become The Warning petition or amicus brief signed by all of us, then sent to where it could do the most good in all 50 states..that's something I would like very much to be a part of..And I imagine there are more of us here who feel the same..

I have downloaded a copy of the actual writings of these two Federalist Society members..You can as well here..

https://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=4532751

In it they go to great lengths to explain that Section 3 of the 14th Amendment is self executing..It just is, no court ruling or act of Congress is needed to deploy it..As I am writing this reply Trump and the other office holders who acted in concert with him are right now disqualified from holding office..Period..full stop!

What I believe is necessary is a national conversation..This must get publicized now, printed in every paper in the country, uploaded to every appropriate website on the internet..And talked about on every appropriate TV show every day going forward..

Two lawyers in the Federalist Society have just said that he cannot run, based on Section 3 of the 14th Amendment. That's a pretty big deal. (Damn shame, I should add, that something so glaringly obvious is a "big deal" for a couple of repugs to acknowledge.)

I've never been sorry for a day with Steve Schmidt's THE WARNING, both reading and listening. He stays on target and doesn't for a moment led us slide into lethargy. Acknowledging that there is a slim chance we should be aware of, but doesn't for a second allow us to think it could ever, ever be a good thing, so we must fight back against all Trumpian people as well as the criminal himself, and alert everyone again that the Republicans have let this happen, helped it along and are now frozen with what they have NOT done, no longer able to govern. Take McConnells silent moments as a visual. Steve, dont' stop, keep going, stay tough and take us with you. So grateful for THE WARNING. jb

America’s news media, like all things touched by Trump and his MAGA cabal, has indeed been transformed Steve. Transformed into a corrupt, prostituted tool to be used by Trump et al and anyone of their ilk that will generate ratings, and thus advertising profits. As part of the civic education reformation that the US so desperately needs, we need to re-inculcate into our American national civic psyche the consensus that a news media that is an independent arbiter of objectively verified truth is a “must have” for a democracy to exist. Not only that, we must come to understand what a news media that is an independent arbiter of truth looks like and consists of. We must educate Americans that most of what exists, especially on cable TV, is not that. Instead, it is a thinly disguised quasi-state propaganda machine. Until we thirst for, and will properly support, objective independent news media that does not wish to espouse political views, but report and analyze them, we will continue to get the swill and pablum that is being served up. It’s so sad that one has to view and listen to the BBC to find an accurate portrayal of our US public square. That really says it all , doesn’t it?

Reporting from Washington

Aug. 10, 2023

Two prominent conservative law professors have concluded that Donald J. Trump is ineligible to be president under a provision of the Constitution that bars people who have engaged in an insurrection from holding government office. The professors are ACTIVE MEMBERS OF THE FEDERALIST SOCIETY (caps mine), the conservative legal group, and proponents of originalism, the method of interpretation that seeks to determine the Constitution’s original meaning.

The professors — William Baude of the University of Chicago and Michael Stokes Paulsen of the University of St. Thomas — studied the question for more than a year and detailed their findings in a long article to be published next year in The University of Pennsylvania Law Review.

Manipulated? I can’t stop laughing. The entire media has been hoodwinked by TFG. All those super smart people charged with educating the public? Again I laugh! Or should I say smirk? I never trusted Tapper and on occasion doubted myself since he is majorly the voice of CNN. What a pathetic man that he could actually admit on the airwaves that he is an idiot.

I heard a couple of years back that CNN gossip had it that Tapper was the least liked member among all of the newscasters -- least liked by the newscasters themselves (not the camera-people, secretaries, etc.) I never liked him personally, but I was surprised that this was such an open secret.
