On Thursday in The Washington Post, Robert Kagan lifted his voice into the dead winds of silence that mandates America’s greatest threat be ignored, while it strengthens, metastasizes and menaces the country’s foundations and future.
Mr. Kagan has dared say the quiet part out loud. Donald Trump is winning. Trump is thriving, and pretending otherwise in the name of protecting the president by preventing more people from finding out, is among the greatest lunacies of our demented age.
Kagan has also talked about the coming campaign in an absolutely accurate, precise and detailed manner that interprets what is happening as a dynamic, unfolding and worsening event. Kagan understands that Trump is gaining strength, and as he does, his strength will condition the behaviors of the most predictable groups of people in the world. The donors, CEOs and members of Congress won’t oppose what is coming.
They will all fall in line — and hold no line — as Trump crosses every line with absolute impunity. Catastrophe will be at hand. Weimar America will fall and the “angry 20s” will give the world our first dictator. He will be unbound, unchained and unrestrained.
Kagan talks about many of the utterly predictable events that lie ahead, but lacked the space to address them all. Here are some more:
2024 will be an angry year. The rage will grow month by month as Trump steamrolls his competition, and turns his sights on President Biden and his team. Eighty percent of the country does not want the choice being imposed by a snarling American media that absolutely does not want to see the coming attraction spoiled. What lies ahead is already in focus, and as Robert Kagan points out, no one seems to care. In the end, the race that Biden hoped for has come to pass on the Republican side. Over and over again, his team made clear how useful Trump was — both as a political and fundraising prop.
The America that will exist in Trump’s second term will be one where your bank account is suddenly closed for your getting out of line. The Trump official will make a call to their preferred lobbyist — maybe Kevin McCarthy — and pass on the unbanked list. Poof! No more JP Morgan Chase account. All done. The political parties and scores of “little Eichmanns” will be tasting real power for the first time. They will be like animals tasting blood. They will want more. More control, more power, more revenge, more vengeance. This is where things always go off the rails in a society. We are nearing that cliff.
What is amazing is how we got here as a nation. The fall of America is at hand. Truly.
A few years back, Lin-Manuel Miranda created a play called “Hamilton.” It was a work of artistic and patriotic genius.
There is a song from the play that is particularly poignant in this moment of disaster, during which we will be called to measure up in order to save the country. It’s called “Dear Theodosia:”
What will you do?
I know one thing: I will never submit to an American dictator who tries to burn the US Constitution. Never.
VIDEO COMMENTARY: Why Elon Musk continues to unravel
If you didn’t get a chance to read yesterday’s essay about Elon Musk’s latest antics, have a listen to my thoughts on his comments, as well as the danger he poses to the United States and the world:
A few considerations before I pack up and leave for g-d knows where
Election is 12 months away
Economy is strong
Inflation weak
Will have 1 maybe 3 interest rate cuts starting in February
Gas prices, beef, chicken, eggs all falling
Israel will be off front pages
Infrastructure activity will peak
Hot summer and fires, brown outs in tx, will bring attention to climate
More stories of botched abortions of young girls
Mass shootings will occur
The majority of Americans in middle America do not pay attention until the ads start, Trump is defined, Biden is as old,
OLD BEATS FASCIST, RACIST, HOMOPHOBE, ANTI SEMITE, PRO GUN AND MAN WHO SINGLE HANDILY TOOK AWAY CHOICE FROM WOMEN AND THEIR MEN IN AMERICA.
I like these facts, if I’m wrong I’m leaving with Barbra S
All of this is moot if he suffers injury or illness in next 12 months and there is still a 30% shot newsom is on top of ticket
I read Kagan’s piece yesterday in the Washington Post. I agree wholeheartedly with his analysis. He nailed it, and if anyone still has reservations as to the dystopian future that awaits all of us should the Orange Mussolini ever take office again; they won’t have reservations any longer.
That said, when a perennial neo-con, who never met a war he didn’t like, tells you our democracy is standing at a precipice, we definitely should listen. And like Steve, this op-ed is one of the best I have ever read regarding a second Trump term. Please read it if you haven’t already done so.
That said, It doesn’t, however, excuse the fact that Kagan was war monger and one of the architects of the Iraq War. He was a founding member of the Project for the New American Century (think tank), along with Bill Kristol, Dick Cheney, Wolfowitz and Feith that posited that in order to invade Iraq, America would need to experience a Pearl Harbor style event, in order to galvanize the American people for a protracted, manufactured war, based on nothing but American ambition and power.
