The 2024 Democratic National Convention was a flawless celebration of the American spirit, freedom, decency, common sense and hope that better days are ahead. During it, Trump was deflated, fear was abated, and madness was called out directly. MAGA’s noxious creed was rebutted by the American creed, and when it was, idealism — repressed and buried under the rubble of the cynical Trump years — exploded in the convention hall and around the country. The message was simple. Do not be afraid. Better days are here if we choose them.
The president of the United States is not the leader of a faction, but of the greatest nation in the history of the world, as Kamala Harris made clear. The American president is the representative of ALL of the American people, especially those citizens who are part of the LOYAL opposition. What Vice President Harris reminded the country of last night wasn’t just necessary and restorative, but deeply true. We share so much more in common than we do in difference.
We live in a magical country where anything is possible. There was a day when a young man from Jamaica and a young woman from India met in the United States. They fell in love, and had a daughter. She will be the first woman president of the United States. The story is extraordinary, but the only miracle involved is the nation where it happened. What a time to be alive and be involved.
The best of America walked out onto the DNC dais this week. It was a shocking contrast compared to the decay, corruption and extremism of Trump’s autocratic Bund gathering.
During the days ahead, Vice President Harris will reach her polling apogee. She will skim the top of a parabola, and then gravity will start to pull her number back down, tightening the race as the nights cool, the days shorten and the leaves turn. Some in the media will talk about a Trump comeback, which will be nonsense, but there will be days of doubt and worry ahead.
Stay steady and DO SOMETHING. Get involved. Volunteer.
In today’s edition of Civil Discourse,
shares suggestions on how to get involved:
If you want to help with voter protection, here is the National Volunteer Interest Form. This is for people who are available to volunteer for relatively shorter periods of time, such as shifts during Early Vote or on Election Day.
Late Help Form. This is for people who can volunteer full-time or otherwise for a substantial period of time.
Want to volunteer for Harris for President? This is for all volunteer activities, not just Voter Protection.
America is moving forward, and Donald Trump is going to lose.
Trump will not accept the election results. He will do everything he can to take power by whatever means necessary. The American people will not tolerate it. After watching the DNC, I’m betting on the American people, who are slow to activate and engage, but the time has certainly come, and that singular sense was palpable all week. It is finally time to cancel America’s nastiest, ugliest, rottenest, meanest, dumbest, ignorant show.
President Harris won’t be perfect, but she won’t divide the nation, support our enemies, undermine our allies, values and history.
Vice President Harris is exactly correct about America. It is the greatest story ever told, and it keeps getting better. For a long time during this lost decade of Trump, it seemed like circling the drain was a permanent orbit. It’s not.
The journey is going to continue forward again. One day we will reach the mountaintop from which King saw the shining city on the hill at the edge of martyrdom in a prophetic vision. He left us with certitude about reaching the summit, but left no clue about the date. I wish I could tell you when the work will be done, but I can’t. I just know that President Harris is going to get us closer before she passes the torch.
It is okay to be excited about politics and to feel hope and enthusiasm about the future. It’s okay to get misty-eyed at a son who loves his dad, and the achievement of the daughter of two American immigrants. It’s okay for your heart to swell with pride when the American flag is carried by. It’s called patriotism, and though he did his best to suck it out of Americans’ hearts, Donald Trump failed. America is so much bigger than him, and so is Kamala Harris.
We know small men make bad presidents, but a big woman just might make a giant one.
Kamala Harris for president and Gus’ dad for vice president.
Decency is making a comeback in America.
That is one thing I have greatly hoped for: decency taking precedence again. It is not much to ask for, but it has been a heavy lift trying to bring it back. Amen.
I saw today a summary of a book that J.D. Vance endorsed last year. It is important we keep such views in mind because this is what the fight comes down to. See below, a book he endorses:
In the book, Up from Conservatism, the authors advocate for the repeal of the Civil Rights Act, for politicians to conduct “deep investigations into what the gay lifestyle actually does to people”, that college and childcare be defunded, and that government “promote male-dominated industries” in order to discourage female participation in the workplace.
Kamala Harris is steel. Behind the smiles there is strength, will and someone who will stand up to the fakers, frauds and abusers of power: Trump, Putin, the Supreme Court, the sham remnants of the Republican party.
At the DNC she defined herself as a leader who will not back down from a fight for what is right and just.
If SCOTUS and the GOP don’t succeed in suppressing the vote, which they will desperately try to do between now and November 5th, she will win.
