Jan Crawford may have gotten it right about hiding Biden’s decline, but on the same show she stated that SCOTUS is not corrupt and that SCOTUS was absolutely not giving Trump a get out of jail free card with its immunity decision. So I’ll reserve judgment on her journalism chops.
It should be clarified that the Democratic Party leadership tagged him a loser. Many of us in the Democratic Party never, ever thought of him in that way. I was in graduate school in Norman, Oklahoma in 1976 when candidate Carter came to town. My wife and I went to the field house to hear him speak and later gladly voted for him. We did the same in 1980 and, like other elections (Humphrey, Gore), rue the day he lost to Reagan. Many of us have held him in high esteem and celebrated his achievements. He was a good man, a very good man.
I agree with Schmidt but, it is time to take his fangs out of Biden's throat. Biden's famous ego led him to make a mistake in running again. But, Biden is not responsible for tRump's re-elrection. The apathetic left wing voter is. A right wing voter knows that he is in the political minority so he cannot afford to not vote. The "liberal" voter doesn't understand that the only way to be the majority is to vote every damned time. In the words of Pete Seeger, "When will they ever learn? Oh when will they ever learn?"
I've said for over a decade that the Democratic base is the laziest entity I've ever seen. Initially they wouldn't come out to vote in off year elections, which has resulted in a majority of state legislatures turning red...with dire consequences. And not to come out (9 million Dems stayed home?) when they knew an authoritarian was on verge of stealing power? Unfreekinbelievable.
Then again, Trump's win was helmed by a very corrupt party who violently tried to steal the election LAST time. Does anyone seriously believe that the election was not swung by the world's richest man in secret talks with Putin FOR THE LAST TWO YEARS? That was yet another "shocking" scandal and revelation that came and went in an instant.
And how many local and state leaders had press conferences questioning the math in their own areas or states? They're all over YouTube. Who should have been in charge of investigating that? No one even talks about it now. Are we all doing our version of kissing the ring? Does no one DARE question it?
And then there was that kremlin guy saying right after the election that the time was coming for Trump to pay up with Russia for all Russia did to get him elected. That and so much more is all over Meidas Touch.
And left wing voters who vote for the third party candidate are always helping the right. They have never been able to get a third party candidate elected ..Anderson 1980.
Most of the MAGA horde likely look down on a decent, selfless, generous and kind man like Carter. Instead, they see him as a "sucker" and a "loser" who squandered his chance at power. Welcome to Trumpworld. Way to go, America.
Jeff, I was thinking the very same thing only I had in mind Reagan and his posse when they were "negotiating" with the Iranians behind the scenes before Reagan was even elected, to hold the hostages until Reagan was in office, making Carter look like a sucker and a loser.
To be honest, ever since this MAGA thing started in 2015, I have been miserable. It is like the worst in people have been brought forward. I was naive to think most people are good. That is not true, as MAGA clearly shows. If I live long enough to see MAGA gone, that will be nice. But the reality is people do not change. It will just get a new name and a new standard bearer and the same morons voting for it.
Jimmy was the right person for that time. His goodness was the poultice America needed to mend from the scourge of Nixon’s Republican crookedness and deceit. We now need to work to block the Nomination Abominations. A letter to your senators is in this. https://hotbuttons.substack.com/p/nomination-abominations?r=3m1bs
The idea that Jimmy Carter was a weak leader and a loser: was that almost all right wing propaganda in the press, same as happens now?
Jimmy was such a mild mannered, superior man. Did his party not stick up for him?
I wasn’t aware of politics back then but I heard broad rumors and the one I kept hearing was that he was a weak president. Someone I respected finally set me straight. It upsets me that it’s common to lie to the American people and that many or most believe the lies — and then to rename it disinformation. What an innocent, sanitized word.
That’s my thinking also. But I just read something from Mrs. Betty Bowers I believe it was. She said if you call somebody a liar and they sue you, you have to prove not only that they lied, but that they had malicious intent. Malicious Intent is hard to prove. That’s the main reason the media doesn’t call anybody a liar so I gathered.
Ive been thinking about the fact that I would have to prove malicious intent if I sued someone for telling a lie about me. Doesn’t telling a reputation-destroying lie about someone carry with it an intrinsic malicious intent? It appears this law is meant to protect the liars.
You are so right about Jimmy Carter. I admired him as a child and vividly remember the joy I felt when he was elected President. My admiration for him has never wained and it's admittedly been hurtful over the years to hear all the slurs against him. In the first presidential election I could vote, I proudly cast my vote for Walter Mondale. I couldn't understand why his campaign ended up on the wrong side of a historic landslide. It seemed so obvious he was better choice, the better man. That he was morally and intellectually fit. It opened my eyes, and I have never ever taken an election for granted since. Off-year elections, mid--terms, presidential, none. Our vote is what will save us. Rest in peace President Carter 🙏
I think the way our country reacted to Jimmy Carter tells us a lot about who we are. We don’t appreciate the good guy all that much. He made us turn down A/C and deal with reality. Yet he was a great man. Are we through with great men? Electing Trump kind of says that’s true for too many of us.
All I know is that I chose to be a teacher. I found out our schools were corrupt and set out in 1995 to expose that to save democracy. Few care. I’ve had websites up for years. WhiteChalkCrime.com. EndTeacherAbuse.org. I wrote three books. Neither government nor media leaders seem to care that our schools have been hijacked the same way Jimmy Carter hadn’t been a hero. Did Trump happen so people will start to care? I can hope.
Watched Man from Plains (Jonathan , 2007) last night. I recommend a viewing to both remember and then celebrate Jimmy Carter as well as get another look at the Middle East as it barreled its way to this current, deadly, tragic intractability. The contrast between an actual public servant and whatever this incoming shite is is stark. It should be required MAGA evangelical viewing.
A couple of major points I disagree with you on Steve in this article. First you said Jimmy Carter was disrespected by his own party. This is a wild generalization. He was much loved and respected by members of the Democratic Party always, myself included.
Second on that same program last Sunday Jan Crawford said the Supreme Court was not corrupt, and that by declaring Trump immune, didn’t affect the cases against him or the election. What?? Just those 2 statements from her make her a terrible journalist in my eyes. Where is the truth/facts in those statements?
I usually begin a new year with hope and optimism. This time, I'm almost dreading it. Four more years of having to see that ugly face, hear that horrible voice and see photos of him with that stupid thumbs up. Isn't almost 10 years enough? Ten minutes was enough. So buckle up. Don't tune out, work toward the 2026 midterms when the Dems can regain the house and maybe the senate. It happened in 2018, it can AND WILL happen again. Happy New Years, all!
One rare man who served as our leader. So lucky that this administration will be part of his memorial; imagine Trump arranging it? If he even bothered.
Integrity!!! A word that should be used for every politician ,but unfortunately there is not one person standing that can use that word to describe themselves in our politics today - President Carter had more in his little finger than do those in Congress today!!
As his site promises the truth is would like to quote part of an article from the Prince George Community News published 20 Feb 2023. While what Carter did regarding the nuclear accident was dangerous, he did not avert a meltdown . His team was part of a large cleanup effort. Certainly laudatory performance that does not need to be exaggerated.
"Brown noted that records suggest U.S. military personnel arrived several weeks after the accident.
"There would've been contamination," he said. "There would have been relatively high radiation fields and that's why they had limited time to go in and do their job."
Carter was one of the 150 U.S. military personnel who worked on the cleanup alongside roughly 860 facility staff, 170 Canadian military personnel, and 20 construction contractors.
A speech delivered by U.S. Admiral Hyman Rickover in 1978 indicates he asked Canada for permission to send a group of naval officers to help, but also to gain experience.
Rickover said Carter did "an outstanding job," according to a copy of his remarks, published to Carter's presidential library website."
The more important point that I discovered when reading his last autobiography was that this experience helped inform decision making when the Three Mile Island incident happened (when he was President). Carter knew what needed to be done.

I'm just disgusted with it all.
There’s a Substack here that lays it all out; Tin Foil Matt. I just read all of its newsletters this Monday evening
And left wing voters who vote for the third party candidate are always helping the right. They have never been able to get a third party candidate elected ..Anderson 1980.
Nader 2000 Stien 2016 2024 .. They are gleeful ..
Am forever ashamed to say I voted for Anderson in 1980; my feeble excuse is I was young and dumb (19)
Never heard of Biden's famous ego.

I have felt this way since Reagan, then Gingrich , then the Tea Party and now Trump and the MAGA’s and the Musk/ Putin regime.

Steve,
Jimmy was a great man, a man of true accomplishments and integrity who never deserved to be so disrespected and maligned by much smaller people.
I didn’t know that this happened to you. It was terrible and you should have been allowed to counter it.
All the best in the New Year. Please be safe.
