I hope you're right, Steve, and this time, I believe you. I think Trump is weak and can be defeated at the ballot box, although I think they'll cheat as much as possible, including having states override votes. But Democrats have to be strong and vigilant, and I hope the press stops beating them up. Trump/Vance is the danger to our country, not Joe, Kamala, or any other Democrat.
I am royally po’d about the unnecessary wounds the democrats have self inflicted. They seemingly never learn.
I voted for Biden/Harris in the primary and I fully expected to do so in the fall election. I want to vote for them. And I am angry at the fair weather Chicken Littles who have mucked things up beyond repair for the many of us who are still with Biden. Those who so cavalierly dismiss my vote and that of 14,000,000 citizens.
I can see that Biden will step aside because the momentum has become an overwhelming force not to be stopped. I am coming around to see the handwriting on the wall and am working through the 5 stages of grief (anger, denial, bargaining, depression, acceptance) and am closing in on acceptance.
It is my understanding that if neither Biden nor Harris are on the ballot, the war chest (aka money, the life blood of the modern campaign) goes away. It will not transfer to a new slate of candidates.
If Harris is passed over for the top spot on the ballot, there will be a huge backlash from women, especially women of color. You know, the demographic that saved our bacon last time.
I assume that Harris would choose a white man as VP.
So Tim Ryan is an interesting choice for VP. I love the idea that he could “bring it” to James David.
I hope that every non-MAGAt in this country will vote and vote for the candidates with the D next to their name. I hope any who have qualms about a “Colored Woman” President will get over it. I hope any who have qualms about a white man in a “subservient position” to a “Colored Woman” will get over it. I hope. Because at this point, it is not so much about the individual people on the ballot, it is about defeating fascism and preserving our personal freedoms and way of life. I am hoping. But I am not sure it can happen. Too many can’t see the forest for the trees.
"It is my understanding that if neither Biden nor Harris are on the ballot, the war chest (aka money, the life blood of the modern campaign) goes away. It will not transfer to a new slate of candidates."
As I understand, if Harris is on the ticket, she will have full access to that money, and even if she is not, it *can* be transferred to the DNC for campaign support or to a special PAC to boost the new ticket.
And as for those 14,000,000 Democrats who voted for Biden in the primaries, they did not see a live debate involving President Biden. I believe that — had they been able to see that prior to casting their primary ballots — the number might have been much smaller. That debate provided "new information" that primary voters were not allowed to see, and that's exactly why we are in this pickle today. Transparency is essential for credibility.
And yes, Tim Ryan would be a brilliant VP choice for Harris!
An aside: with less than 4 months to go until the election, I wouldn’t worry one bit about the $100 million war chest. If it goes to a candidate, and someone objects, one executive order would gum it up and run out the clock, you know, like they keep doing with the courts.
Yes, I agree. The SC gave the green light that the president can do nothing wrong, immunity they call it. And since no one really knows what official capacity means since it was not enumerated, Biden should do whatever he wants w the money. Maybe it will make up for all the Russian money given to the meekly wounded ranter.
Sky 777 first no one could actually challenge Biden in the primaries because he is an incubant ..A lot of us didn't want him to run again but no choice ...You are asssuming that people who don't like Kamala are racist ...which is unfair.. And no I have no problem with a white man being picked as a VP with a black woman at the head of the ticket.. Try to give us Dems a little more credit ...And yes the black vote helped Biden win but I don't think he would have won if all white people voted for someone else.
All of my friends have never wavered to vote Blue and I have changed other people's minds with just the facts and Project 2025 that Vance not his birth name, wrote the intro to it.
Would you worry if it were Michelle Obama and Tim Ryan? She's up by 12% over Trump in the last poll I saw asking about it. What about Beyonce and Tim Ryan? I think that wins by double digits too.
If President Biden steps down, he should resign the presidency as well so that President Harris can run as the incumbent. Dems do not have time to waste on picking 2 new candidates. Bad enough that there would be a need to find a veep candidate.
"Those who so cavalierly dismiss my vote and that of 14,000,000 citizens." No one is dismissing these votes. That said, it wasn't even a real primary once Biden announced he was running again. What, you seriously think no one better than Dean Philips would have run had Biden stuck to his "one term transitional" candidate? Had he done that, his name would NOT even have been on the ballot.
Simple fantasy! The DNC would not support and no real POTUS contender ran. Last time that happened was 1980. How did that turn out for Kennedy and Carter? Gimme a break with this denial nonsense. If Biden had not run, like he said he wouldn't, Harris, Newsome, Whitmer, just to name a few would have run. It was a bullshit primary. Period. Full stop.
And he did in fact say he would run only once and be a transition away from TFG and restore our place domestically and internationally. He's done a great job of that and has many positive achievements. But we're not electing an 81 year old based on what he did for us, but rather can he still do this for another 4 years. I think we know the answer to that, regardless of all the wishing to the contrary.
Don't believe me? Go back a couple of weeks to his post NATO press conference where he was asked about 10 times about his changed decision to only run once. He didn't correct a single person who asked him that question, but said he hadn't finished the job and that he feels he is the only person able to beat TFG. He corrected a bunch of questions, but NOT a single time on this one. And he said it in 2019. Google is your friend.
Work on your reading comprehension skills, please. That's not what I'm saying so either now you're just being silly or willfully ignorant.
There was no real R primary in 2020 because TFG was the incumbent. There was a D primary in 2020 because there was no D incumbent. Both D and R had a primary in 2016 because Obama had two terms and could not run again, so neither party had an incumbent. Same with 2000 after Clinton's 2 terms and 2008 after Bush (W's) 2 terms. Having one in name only, like this year for the Ds and 2020 for the Rs, is not the same as actually having a real primary. Even a weak incumbent, like Biden this year, is given a lot of latitude when they announce to run again. Neither the party, nor the DNC, would actually encourage or support an actual primary. See how this works?
So please, since you're falsely stating my "logic", tell me who the R primary competition was in 1984 vs. Reagan, 1992 vs. Bush, 2004 vs Bush (w), 2020 vs. TFG? And provide the same for the real D primary other than my previously referenced 1980. So, 1996 vs. Clinton, 2012 vs. Obama, and 2024 vs. Biden? I'll wait...
And here, I'll even help you. 2020 R primary contenders vs. TFG:
1. Bill Weld
2. Joe Walsh (hint, not the singer)
3. Mark Sanford
4. Rocky De La Fuente
Okay, so if you want to pretend that was anything more than a primary in name only, same as this year for Biden who ran against Dean Phillips and Jason Palmer, I have a bridge to sell you. If your thought is anything other than "who the hell is that?", again, I have another bridge to sell you.
Joe never said he wouldn't run for re-election in 2024.
Obviously now I wish he had sat this one out, but he thought he could beat Trump and he made the effort to do it, and his successful Presidency does give us that right.
But anyone could have challenged him. They were absolutely free to do so.
Well at least you're feellng good today. Sheesh. And really, whoever the nominee is, my 1,000% opinion is they should hire Steve. Freaking. Schmidt. to run the messaging strategy.
Yeah, I love your optimism, which I too share. Rather than gloom, I think these are exciting times.
At this point I think it is a question of when, not if, Biden will step aside, and Harris will become our candidate. Talk about a sea change - what a great contrast she will be against Trump. She is his polar opposite, giving voters a very clear choice. I think she'd wrap up the black, the minority and even the women's vote - partly just for the novelty of her candidacy. White man will struggle with it, but even that is an exciting change from the same old, same old that we are used to where white men dominate.
So let's shake things up, and hopefully do so in the next day or two so the press will focus on something other than Trump for a while.
I felt the same after Obama's speech. McCain had a sense for these things. Although I never understood the Palin thing. We likely understand it better today than we did then. Your column made my day as several others have said. This will be the most exhausting, emotional month in our lifetimes.
I always read your blog with interest, but have never written a comment. It’s getting more than scary now. The ad about women having to stay in violent marriages truly hit the mark. This ad needs to be reissued, but instead of Ohio, America should replace it. Suzy Shuster, should receive clear acknowledgment for it and her skill should be tapped for many more on all the key 2025 project issues. Thanks for your work!
And trump will win the WH. He won’t win the election. Instead, he will contest the election results and take it to the Supreme Court. You know, the bunch that just ruled that it’s perfectly fine for him to commit murder. Yeah, just guess how they’re going to rule on a contested election. They are probably already drafting their decisions, to be updated as events unfold.
I’m not saying they will make him dictator. They will just decide that Trump won the election. Similar to Bush v. Gore. They’ll make up some bullshit justification. Trump will take care of the dictator part himself.
But, hey, if President Biden can have them arrested just for declaring Trump the winner, please tell me more about how that would work. You’re the first person to suggest such a thing, and you bet I’m interested to know more!
The way I see it, the only way to avoid this scenario is for the Supreme Court to be expanded by four judges, like yesterday.
They can't just throw out a state's slate for no real reason.
Our elections are fair.
our Primaries are fair.
I'm tired of people whining when they lose.
you lost- roll up your sleeves and win next time.
If Trump wins, there will be no next time.
We will be like Russia. We may get to vote, but it won't mean anything because the republican party will not allow the democrats to ever have power again.
They don’t care about evidence. They will make shit up. Look what they did in the immunity case.
I dearly hope you are right and I am wrong, but I don’t see it. They will fabricate evidence and/or twist logic any which way they have to in order to rule in Trump’s favor. The shameless six are well paid to do Trump‘s bidding, and they know they are dead if ever they stop.
I know there is a lot of rancor between those of us on the pro-democracy side: There are those that see President Biden forced to step aside by a shark infested media, and those that argue his public standing has diminished beyond repair. I agree that it's time to pass the torch. I realize that strategy is also fraught with risk. In any case, this debate should NOT be about Joe Biden the man, or his remarkable record as president. Most of all, it's an indictment of We the People for allowing this to happen, with a large segment of the population "seduced by the dark side" with lie on top of lie. That's why we need a clear, strong new voice.
Can Kamala "bring it"? Kamala isn't my first choice. Far from it, but she's young and smart enough, demonstrating flashes of eloquence. If it's Kamala, I'm onboard. I hope the most ardent Biden supporters are too. Again, it's not about him. It's about our future.
There were a lot of speakers at the MAGA convention asking that old question: Are you better off now than four years ago? The expected answer was "No, I was better off four years ago."

I'm watching this late, Steve, but I'm absolutely here to say: Ohio was *robbed* in not seeing this ad in 2022. Vance is just as unfit to serve as Trump, and the nation MUST see this ad updated in 2024. I want to see Tim return to public service and I hope, one way or another, this election will enable him to do that. We need him and others like him.
Had Trump ended his speech at about the 15-minute mark last night, I would not have agreed with you, Steve. But, of course, he didn't. From contrite, vulnerable, thankful to bombastic, dishonest, threatening, and self-possessed -- with the world watching. He is totally beatable. Trump didn't need Vance to help bring him down, but I, for one, appreciate that he picked someone who believes a woman's purpose is to serve a man. That should play well in the suburbs. And I love the idea of Tim Ryan. May the process of Biden stepping aside gracefully continue with alacrity. It's time to be on the offensive, especially since we have truth and honor on our side.
I hope you're right, Steve, and this time, I believe you. The media is a huge problem and NBC is being called Fox Light
CNN certainly is.
I was blaming the media in the beginning, but it’s people like Steve, Clooney and all the dems forming a circular firing squad
The MAGA have their ads written by dems and people like Steve ( palin !) who was voracious in their dump Biden - without any offering an alternative
The media is being fed an narrative by the damn dems!
Form a phalanx of protection against Hannibal Lector spewing madman who will end the fucking democracy
What the hell is wrong with everyone
If Biden won’t quit get behind him
God forbid this election, in any way, ends up before SCOTUS.
It will, and the shameless six are likely already drafting their decisions in Trump’s favor.
Thanks for this Steve. It made my day!😎
Long live the democratic party Lets take this fight to the finish

I never thought this country would vote a black President into office despite voting for him. Then he was elected to a second term.
Maybe enough voters are out there to vote Kamala in.
With Kamala Harris running she will get the black votes, and women will vote for her due to the total abortion ban with DT. Yes to Tim Ryan.
It's a gamble.
But what choice do we have.
Biden has been a great President, but it seems the party has lost faith in his ability to win.
and that's a huge liability.
Ohmygosh Tim Ryan, of course. I was looking at mark kelly but we need him in the senate
we are going to need someone solid from the Midwest to bolster the ticket.
I felt the same after Obama's speech. McCain had a sense for these things. Although I never understood the Palin thing. We likely understand it better today than we did then. Your column made my day as several others have said. This will be the most exhausting, emotional month in our lifetimes.

Okay. Then I will cheer up and not go through with my plans to move to Patagonia.

True. Sad.
You can't move to a windbreaker jacket(!)
First... great post, Steve!
I know there is a lot of rancor between those of us on the pro-democracy side: There are those that see President Biden forced to step aside by a shark infested media, and those that argue his public standing has diminished beyond repair. I understand both arguments, but we're talking past each other. After all, we're all seeking the same result.
I agree that it's time to pass the torch. I realize that strategy is also fraught with risk. In any case, this debate should NOT be about Joe Biden the man, or his remarkable record as president. There were a lot of speakers at the MAGA convention asking that old question: Are you better off now than four years ago? The expected answer was "No, I was better off four years ago."
Well, these speakers didn't remember their grammar school mathematics when the subject of subtraction came up.
What year was it four years ago? 2024 – 4 = 2020. That was the time of the Covid Pandemic !! There was a massive lockdown. People stayed in their homes, cars were lined up for food at local pantries. jobs were lost, schools were closed. My oh my, MAGA can lie.
"This constant lying is not aimed at making the people believe a lie, but at ensuring that no one believes anything anymore.
A people that can no longer distinguish between truth and lies cannot distinguish between right and wrong.
And such a people, deprived of the power to think and judge, is, without knowing and willing it, completely subjected to the rule
of lies. With such a people, you can do whatever you want."
- Hannah Arendt,
Very convenient amnesia about 2020!
I needed this pep talk! Now if we can get some movement..
we all need to buckle down and keep a firm upper lip and fight the fascists.
