Your son is very lucky to have you as a father. Wishing him well on his birthday.

“I thought about the book today because Josh Hawley, Ted Cruz, Donald Trump, and many others, stand as totems for what I hope my son will never become, nor ever will be.”

Happy B-day to your son, and very sage advice. Unfortunately, these politicians have been corrupted by power as they rot and contort themselves in their own hubris and arrogance.

“Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man’s character, give him power,”

—-Abe Lincoln (although some say it was mistakenly attributed). Either way, the adage or quote holds true…:)

Happy Birthday to your son!

Lucas Kunce is running to defeat the weasel Hawley in November. As a Democrat from a rather red town, he hasn't had much luck in elections here, but I will certainly be voting for him. Hope others will, too, if only to vote against Hawley who has never had Missourians', or even Americans', best interests at heart.

I’m a Texan but supporting Lucas’s campaign from afar. He deserves election, and Hawley deserves nothing.

Patric,

If you haven't seen it, I did a podcast with Lucas late last year:

Lucas is an impressive candidate! I can’t understand how this is even close. I felt the same way about Tim Ryan who is an incredible public servant, smart, has integrity, and really cares about working people. I just don’t understand how a candidate like JD Vance won. We need to crack their code. How are candidates like Vance able to get working class voters to vote against themselves? Perhaps Lucas should study that race to see how the Hedge Fund guy won in Ohio. I suspect that Hawley will use a similar trick. Hawley betrayed his oath, betrayed American democracy, he is unfit to serve. I hope Lucas kicks his ass!

Thanks Steve. I hadn’t seen it, and just did. I donated again to him. “Help fix our country. Send this man to the United States Senate,” you say at the end. Roger that.

A voter without voting representation in Congress, I’ve donated to Kunce, and in TX, Allred. We need good people in this world who live the values that matter.

I have been supporting Lucas, from California, since I listened to your podcast so long ago. Lucas Kunce is a good man and a great candidate. I work with a person who went to H.S. with Hawley...needless to say he is involved in fundraising for Lucas too!

The real question is...How can we vote out Hawley's abolitionist wife???

I’m supporting Lucas’s campaign from Massachusetts. Hawley and his wife ( argued Dobbs) just need to slink back to their caves and go away.

Excellent, Steve. It appears your son is a fellow Taurus. Us old Tauruses say Welcome.

I won’t dwell in too much negativity in this post, but when I think of Hawley and others, one word does them justice: craven.

The dictionary says it is “contemptibly lacking even the rudiments of courage.”

My great-nephews are 13 and 9. I’ve sent this along to my niece, saying it is good food for thought. In in my note, I said there are many ways to serve one’s country. As an example, I told her of a cousin (my first; her first once removed) whose son who was serving until illness forced him out and now is doing community service by working with children in need.

You are grounding your son in ways I hope will stick and with concepts I hope he will also question. May his 18th and his first vote be as meaningful as my 21st and my first vote nearly 56 years ago.

Steve-

Proximity? I share your perspective of what a loving father would say to a son. I share everyone of your points, except I have daughters. May they meet like-minded partners. I grew up in Stirling. Went to WHRHS. My brother's first house was in North Plainfield. I remember the Stony Brook flood in '73. Maybe we just share the same water, ya think!?

The world, and this country, NEEDS good men. Too many have been impressed by the ‘success’ of weaklings/ bullies. We need to be teaching our sons how to actually be men. Teach them to be strong, but also merciful and kind. Teach them to work hard, but also to serve. Teach them that humility is more important than pride. To stand up to bullies, but never become one. Teach them respect for their elders, but also for those weaker than themselves. The fate of our species rides on our ability to create a new generation of men, who understand the challenges and responsibilities that they are born into.
