Is disappearing Venezuelans all that different from delivering disease-ridden blankets to America's original inhabitants and stealing their land? It seems like kindness and empathy are aberrations in America. We were founded on genocide, rape and pillage. They proudly called it Manifest Destiny in history books when I was a kid

That wasn’t an American who did that…but he is so revered that a college is named after him and towns in almost every state bear his name. That was Lord Jeffrey Amherst an Englishman!

The constant bashing of all Americans because of the Republican regime is getting old real fast. There are about 75 million Americans who literally didn’t vote for this.

Magicgirl's avatar

Add in the some 90 million who didn't vote and you've got a large majority of people who were either extremely against this, or didn't think it matter enough to be against this cruel, immoral, illegal, unconstitutional travesty of the Dono Administration, his project 2025 pals, Musk, and the now Maga party.

The majority of us are against this and we must rise and come together to lead the way to reclaim our America, and embrace an honest accounting of our history, recommit to the constitution and stand up to bring about a renaissance for our rule of law.... or so help us God.

Let this shock start a pendulum swing back towards a kind of reckoning to manifest the true dream of America - a swing back to the idealism we find in the founders words and bring them to truly be the result of it's 248 years of it's evolution for everyone. May we find the grit and the grace to see it truly blossom into a country where we proudly restore character, virtue, truth, and trust to stand with each other. May we recover our America and become the generation who came to it's rescue both for the common good of our country as well as for the future good of the entire world.

Wasn’t an American who did what..? Thanks for clarifying Chris.

I totally agree. America is an "exceptional nation." Exceptionally good at whitewashing and re-writing its history and thus forced to make the same mistakes over and over and over again.

Friedrike Merck's avatar

No different. A horrendous part of our national heritage but there were others who thought and acted very differently. They continue to be our guiding lights. Check out Jeremiah Evarts, defender of the Cherokee Nation.

It does seem there is a Yin and a Yang, darkness and light, love and ignorance. Thank you for your suggestion, I'll check out Jeremiah Evarts. (I was happy to see that Leonard Peltier has finally been released from prison.)

Poignant observation and lessons from the Titanic disaster. Hopefully we’ll miss the MAGA iceberg, but we need to act now. Don’t let the bastards stay the course and ruin it all.

James Coyle's avatar

We've already hit the MAGA iceberg, but the ship is not doomed if we act now, and can persuade our representatives to act on our behalf.

Mike's avatar

It's not the iceberg that is MAGA but it's MAGA that is the Titanic, barreling towards fate at breakneck speed with a full head of steam. Only doG knows what will stop this immoral vessel from steering us off the edge of the world.

Well written Steve. What a poignant comparison, and so accurate. Thank you for your thoughtful work and willingness to share.

“The effect on me was one of profound disgust, almost of national dishonor.” Understood. With all due respect, “America’s abiding shame” is not the suicidal suspension of due process but it’s immediate and continued participation in the mass murder of innocent non-combatants, children, women, men, doctors, nurses, rescue workers - anyone unable or unwilling to leave their homeland - in Gaza. With that we have allowed a profoundly corrupt president to remain in office as he conspires to re-write history and betray Ukraine.

Shame? It is a shame that donvict’s downfall will most likely be the result of his financial malfeasance; America, Inc., is growing restless, but its many “Christians” see no moral issues.

Mike's avatar

"America, Inc., is growing restless, but its many “Christians” see no moral issues."

We may be in the middle of a third "Great Awakening". The revival tents have been replaced by wealthy mega churches who worship at the altar of the almighty dollar. The result is Project 2025, which TFG is using to manipulate the rule of law and common decency even while he has no spiritual beliefs whatsoever. Maybe he has subscribed to the Project 2025 theory that his hand is guided by doG or maybe he has deified himself, but there is no doubt that he considers himself far above all of us unwashed.

Yes, hubris sank the unsinkable and could sink a democracy. Great post Steve, thank you.

My grandmother and her family were to have sailed on the Titanic but my great grandfather caught a bad cold, and they remained on shore.

Safe travels Steve, safe travels!

Steve,

I started reading about the Titanic when I read Walter Lord’s “A Night to Remember” when I was in Sixth Grade in 1970. I had seen the movie a couple of years before. Of course Lord did not see Smith, Ismay, many of the officers or the wealthy passengers as heroic. He was one of the first to seek answers in his book. Since then others have written and expanded the research into the conditions as well as issues dealing with the damage to the ship since she was discovered.

Captain Smith was reckless and disregarded ice warning after warning as Ismay pushed him to break the speed record. It was all for greed and the fact that Ismay refused to put number of lifeboats needed on the ship because they would detract from her beauty made things far worse, and the treatment of the Third class passengers was nothing short of criminal. Sadly, few of those responsible faced justice.

This is such a powerful metaphor for today as Trump Regime prepare to sink the American Ship of State. It was so avoidable. Have a wonderful trip as you remember those who perished about Titanic.

All the best,

Steve Dundas

Thank you ! Yes, by and large maga, “christians” keep distorting their own senses, distrusting their moral compass in order to fit in with grandiosity and the next shiny object. May we begin to connect with our senses, truth and each other. Again thank you, Steve and Steve.

Shhhh! The Secret That The Nazis Don’t Want You To Know

It was no secret in 2024 that runaway inflation had decimated the middle class due to the loss of the purchasing power of the dollar estimated to be 90% of what it was in 1970 Due to this loss of purchasing power the value of the dollar is going down and due to that the value of gold is going up since gold is real money without counterparty risk and the value of the dollar rests on nothing but the confidence of the people who use this fiat currency

The charade the government tells us is that the currency has intrinsic value but Nixon in 1971 took our economy and its currency off of the gold standard leaving both political parties to rack up trillions of dollars in debt now with the Cheeto Strongman’s regime ready to cross $40T dollars in order to give his billionaire cronies tax breaks Of course, this is unsustainable but the government and the two political parties don’t want its citizens to know that Now faced with the biggest debt bubble in world history the Wall Street and the government wants to minimize the problem

But when a credit bubble meets tariffs disaster becomes inevitable just as it did in the early 1930’s This is now being played out as equity markets will gradually begin in free fall Of course Wall Street wants you to believe all is well but it’s not

The bond market that used to be a safe haven when the equity market falters has now lost its status and that’s because the foreign investment community that holds $13T in Treasury bonds that cover our debt is losing confidence in America and its government This puts the country at risk at not being able to cover the interest on its debt This is called a debt trap and is a concern for the investment community and government What follows is a currency crisis

So the safe haven for investors has become precious metals namely gold and silver and explains their rise in value

Douglas Paul Truhlar's avatar

There is not enough gold for that to work.

Unless you're considering that all of the US gold is leased out that's not true

My grandmother, my father‘s mother, and her two daughters, were supposed to be on the Titanic, in steerage. Apparently, the Titanic was overbooked, so they contacted her by telegram and offered her earlier passage to catch up with her husband who had already left England. Otherwise, I obviously wouldn’t be writing this post today.

Steve, thank you for your reverence and respect for the good and the holy, and your contempt for the evil and dishonest. You are a steadfast, courageous example to us all.

The Trump as Captain Smith comp has one major snag. Smith, through hubris and pressure from White Star to break the Atlantic crossing time record, made a tragic mistake that led to a horribleaccident. Trump, on the other hand, is sailing the U.S.S. America into the iceberg intentionally, with no regard for the soon to be victims.

Husaria's avatar

And, unlike Smith, Ismay and the crew. They were skilled at their jobs and knew how to carry out their job responsibilities. Hubris, pride and greed severely clouded their judgements and actions. That resulted in tragic events.

The orange buffoon on the other hand is clueless. He couldn’t determine the bow from the stern. But, he would pontificate that he knows everything about ships. And, sadly his MAGAKLAN would sing his praises while drowning in cold North Atlantic waters.

Maybe OT, maybe not. The Titanic sinking, while a tragedy, was not the worst ship wreck of the 20th century. The German cruise liner, the WILHELM GUSTLOFF, refitted for military duty and carrying an estimated 10,000 passengers, was fleeing from Poland back to Germany in January, 1945 and was sunk by a Soviet torpedo. Only 1,000 people survived.

I get it. The USA is the Titanic and the actions we take (or don't take) now will determine who lives or dies at the climax of the crisis (which is inevitable but which still lies in the future). The greatest concern at the moment is the loss of faith in US Treasury Bonds because investors are afraid they will not be paid back (too risky). What we need to do NOW is make our rich pay their fair share of income tax (and perhaps also by a wealth tax). The problem is that MAGA and the billionaires are unwilling to tax themselves, even if it bankrupts the USA. Our political system has failed and our economic system is failing as a result. What must be done is new and dedicated people in Congress and in The Supreme Court. The presidency also needs a patriot and a person dedicated to the US Constitution, but that is not likely to happen until 2028.
