Thank you both for your replies. I was always grateful in the end that the Army took care of my uncle during his final illness. As did others, he fought a long slog in Europe. He passed away at the Veterans Hospital in East Orange, New Jersey in 1969 and is buried in New Jersey.

For us Boomers that were raised by the GG, we remember. My uncle fought in the Pacific. His ship was kamakazi-ed and sank. He never spoke of it. At his funeral a few years ago we got to see a journal he kept. He detailed his experience in that kamakazi attack. It was complete with him being unconscious in the water for a while, being strafed by Japanese Zeros, seeing his fellow sailors burned, drowning or dead. Then waiting for days, in open water for rescue.
In summer when we got together and he went swimming, I always wondered what happened to the skin on his legs and back. After reading his journal, I figured it out.
My uncle and your uncle would have been fast friends.
We are the last of that era / history that actually have a connection to it.
To the later gens WWII is like the US Revolutionary War or wars of the Roman Empire.

The majority of the benefits we / they enjoy today came out of the ashes of WWII. The GI bill built the tech we use today by educating the returning GI's. Who then went on to start companies / businesses. The interstate highway system built the suburbs. The no interest mortgages allowed returning GI’s to own homes. These things, and many more, we’re head and shoulders above, “Thank you for your service "

Just before reading this, I found in my e-mail a letter from the Chairman of the Democratic Party, telling of the efforts being made to fight back and asking for a donation to the party. I replied:
"Mr. Martin,
We are past the point of trying to use the courts or the Congress to get this menace out of office. It's going to take a revolution. And that is coming. I advise you and the rest of the Democrats in Washington to prepare for it. The people will speak, and you probably won't like what you hear. Their anger and frustration is building to dangerous levels. Take the gloves off: we are at war with the Republicans. I am one of thousands who will not allow my grandchildren to grow up under a fascist regime.
Eighty some years ago, our parents generation went to war in Europe to kill fascists. We may have to do the same, only this time it will be on this side of the ocean."

What I'm missing from you, though, are practical steps for us ordinary citizens to take to clean up this "American mess." You write, "[t]his madness must be faced down." How do we face it down? I'm afraid that mass protests in the streets will soon be met with deadly force by the fascists in charge. The General Election in November 2026 will be anocratic. It seems to me that the only way to clean up this mess is to resort to violence, that is, another civil war. Or this American mess has to be cleaned up not from within but from without, by an alliance of the remaining democracies on this planet. This will also require violence.
