Earlier this morning, I posted my video reaction to last night’s debate. For those who prefer to read, below is my take.
“THEY’RE EATING THE DOGS!”
Ten years after entering a presidential campaign via a gaudy golden escalator and envenomating America with racist demagoguery, Donald Trump has come full circle during a psychological unraveling that would have been Oscar-worthy if he was playing Captain Queeg. The immigrants have moved on from raping; they are now devouring our pets.
Watching CNN for two hours during the lead-up to the debate was genuinely shocking. The panels were arranged in ways that produced some of the dumbest commentary I have ever heard on cable television. Astonishing doesn’t begin to describe it. Trump was described as the “Muhammad Ali of debates,” an unstoppable heavyweight who had somehow cornered Kamala Harris as a light and substance-free woman who had flip-flopped on every position she once held. The most incredible moment was when Little Marco was given license by Jake Tapper to smear the vice president by claiming that she had discarded every previous position for the sake of her ambition. It was like watching a “Twilight Zone” episode.
More incredible was the moment when Scott Jennings talked about the burden Kamala Harris faced to prove she was a plausible commander in chief, while Trump spent the afternoon disseminating truly shocking racist bile, which asserted hordes of black Haitians are eating cats and dogs from people’s yards all over America. He flew to Philadelphia with a bevy of indicted criminals, convicted criminals and conspiracy loons, including the utterly insane Laura Loomer, who should be credited with doing for Trump in a debate what his two sons, Uday and Qusay, did for him by picking the weirdo JD Vance as his running mate.
Trump’s behavior has been growing more volatile and erratic by the day. He is routinely incoherent and increasingly prone to violent threats. Nothing that happened last night should be surprising. He is a man with serious mental health issues and personality disorders. Last night, the whole country saw the man whom the vice president accurately described as a man who our generals think is a disgrace and our adversaries a laughingstock.
Trump looked like a schlub for most of the debate. His shoulders were crumpled into a position of loserdom and weakness. His eyes were lowered and his head down because that is the position of subordination, defeat and humiliation. He was disemboweled by Kamala Harris, who destroyed him by becoming the first American in a decade to stand toe-to-toe with him, and call him out with eloquence, precision and devastating examples. Kamala Harris popped the Trump balloon, and when all the raw sewage poured out of the carcass not a single drop slopped up on Kamala Harris, who did what none of the men Trump rolled over could do. She emasculated him, shamed him, humiliated him, held him to account, expressed contempt, dismay and wonderment, while dismissing him with a look that was worth ten million words.
Last night was a virtuous performance. Without question it was the greatest debate performance by a presidential candidate in the television era. In fact, it is in a league of its own. Trump imploded, but Harris stood up. She offered a better path and a better way. Her pitch was perfect and thoroughly American. She gets the country, and certainly knows how to make Donald Trump chase his tail. She pushed every button there was to push on the most predictable candidate in American history. She melted Trump down with references to Wharton, his inheritance, crowd sizes and bankruptcies. Brilliant doesn’t begin to describe it.
Donald Trump is unfit. Period.
He is dangerous and unstable, and no, nobody is eating anyone’s pet.
Kristi Noem may shoot it, but no one is going to eat your pet.

Brilliant, Steve. Just freaking brilliant. Being an educator who needs to get up early to get to school, I had to wait until this morning to catch snippets of the debate. It was a wonderful morning, let me tell you!
Thanks for the transcript Steve, I prefer the written word to videos. Has it only been 10 years since the golden elevator? It feels like an eternity. Donald wrested 7 more minutes of talk time and squandered them all. Anyone who wants this man in charge of our nuclear codes, is insane. Congratulations Kamala!
