The corruption at hand is going to be transformative in America

Donald Trump launched his own meme-linked cryptocurrency on Friday. As of this morning, it has made $58 billion on paper for him and his companies, as reported by Axios.

The coin, $TRUMP, is en route to its final destination of $0.

Truly, it is the most overvalued asset in the world — a sucker’s bet, a 21st century tulip bulb craze — but, as the old saw goes about the mark at the poker table, if you don’t know who it is, it’s you.

The corruption at hand is going to be transformative in America. Nobody alive in this country has ever seen anything like it.

Let’s be clear about a few things.

The American people have been preached a sermon from the gospel of the “rule of law” for 10 long years.

It’s a joke. Here is reality: America has a tiered justice system.

Trump is above the law because he is the law.

His associates are above the law because he is the law.

Poor people, regardless of race, remain under the boot of the rule of law in America.

Giant corporations use the law as their veritable coral reef. It is their feeding ground.

Trump’s North Star for global diplomacy remains “The Apprentice,” where Gary Busey and Meatloaf could be allies in one episode, mortal enemies in the next, and friends again after that.

The real world doesn’t work like that. This is why disaster is drifting towards us, inch by inch, day by day, ever closer.

There is a terrible momentum through the centuries that was staid for 80 long years.

The 15th century was deadlier than the 14th, as the 19th century was deadlier than the 18th, 17th and 16th.

The momentum of human suffering and death was driven by the Industrial Revolution through the birth of the atomic age, and the dawn of an era in which mankind possessed the power to extinct itself and augur Armageddon.

The 20th century cannot be forgotten because its lethality demonstrated the savagery of which human beings are capable when given the tools to kill at an industrial scale.

It was a century of unequalled blood thirstiness and madness during which the greatest horrors and crimes ever recorded were committed.

When the greatest cataclysm in human history ended, two nuclear powers stood at the brink of destruction for 45 long years. They fought against each other in vicious proxy wars all over the world, but the deadly momentum of warfare that killed more people in the next war than the last was held back.

The closest the world came to nuclear destruction during the long Cold War occurred in 1962.

The American president was a combat veteran of the Second World War who no doubt reflected deeply on the experience of floating with his wounded comrades in the Pacific Ocean as the world stood at the brink.

Soviet leader Nikita Kruschev witnessed 900 days of fighting at Stalingrad. Neither had any illusions about war or the meaning of Armageddon.

They chose life, and because they did, we are here.

Part of the reason that we have arrived at this awful moment is the deep contamination of our shared American memory.

John Kennedy is remembered for his affair with Marilyn Monroe much more than he is for saving humanity — which he did.

Ultimately, the Soviet regime, built on the principles of totalitarianism, crumbled against the superior system led by the United States.

There was even a book that proclaimed we had arrived at the “end of history.” Francis Fukuyama, its author, was celebrated and acclaimed.

Today, it looks like a boast reminiscent of the arrogance of the White Star Line that played along with the hyped rhetoric that declared, “Not even God himself could sink this ship.”

The collapse of the Berlin Wall was so sudden that it took on the trappings of the miraculous during the moment of excitement, liberation and possibility. Perhaps the most stunning achievement since its collapse might be the fact that for multiple living generations it seems like it never existed at all.

We do not know what will happen next. It is a mystery, but there are harbingers in the air.

The arrogance of Trump and his team are white hot.

The fecklessness of the Democratic Party in this moment is astonishing.

The American media is shattered, corrupted, capitulant and not on your side. Mostly, they are in business with Trump. Cases in point: here and here.

Truth has become variable.

Lies have become both political currency and the engine of political power.

What could go wrong?
