The American spirit is awakening again

Three nights in August have unleashed a wave of idealism through a display of American excellence, character, patriotism, joy and strength that is awe-inspiring.

Last night, Oprah Winfrey spoke a deep truth when she talked about the necessity of character. She knows. We all know. The time has come to say enough.

What we are collectively witnessing is the magical essence of democracy. This convention is a great pageant of freedom. The wild cheering and patriotic spirit radiating outwards to all corners of the country from Chicago is much needed, long overdue, and demonstrates the resilience of democracy.

The world’s autocrats from Pyongyang, Tehran, Moscow, and Beijing understand Trump, but they don’t understand America. They can’t comprehend what they are watching and seeing. The American spirit is a powerful force, and it is awakening again. A season of apathy and despair is giving way to something better.

Look at the American excellence manifested on the DNC dais. Look at the American excellence on our Olympic team, and look at the American excellence in our armed forces, classrooms and laboratories. What it accrues towards is an unfathomable power that is rooted in liberty. It is a transcendent power that our enemies have never comprehended, but every American knows deeply in their hearts. A manifestation of the spirit I am talking about is perfectly represented by New Hampshire’s state motto: “Live Free or Die.”

Going forward means ending the Trump era. This has been a period of national shame that will be redeemed in the end, not by our sclerotic institutions or the American media, but rather the American people who will act in concert to bring about both generational change and cultural change. The mean years must end — and they will.

We have a birthday to celebrate. Soon America will be 250 years old. The greatest idea in human history has endured for a quarter of a millennium, and its declarations are becoming promises kept.

Tonight, Vice President Kamala Harris will address the American people and lay out a choice. The decision is of monumental importance.

This is a serious moment in American history. A terrible malevolence has arisen and manifested in the MAGA cause. MAGA is fascism, and Trump is a fascist.

Fascism is built on lies and trickery. It relies on deception, grievance, scapegoating, rage, violence and fear to gain power. Fascism is a dogma of darkness and a philosophy of malice. And yes, fascism has come to America, and it is wrapped in a MAGA flag and carrying a desecrated cross.

The antidote is freedom. No decent American will surrender their freedom or seek to take away another American’s freedom for the purposes of appeasing a political ego or taking power. The American heart does not countenance bigotry, hate and violence. Instead, it embraces justice, fairness and tolerance. The American people have been fed a lie about who we are by Donald Trump for so long that he has convinced many of us that he may have a point, when in fact he is more full of shit than any huckster who has ever strode the earth.

I’m sick of his scowl.

I’m sick of his threats.

I’m sick of his behavior and stupidity.

I’m sick of his debasements and idiocies.

I’m sick of his meanness and disrespect towards the symbols, people and sacred spaces that deserve and demand it.

I’m sick of his bullying and childish antics.

I’m sick of his corrupt and entitled family.

I’m sick of his criminal conduct, chaos, recklessness and faithlessness.

I’m sick and tired of my children growing up believing that American politics is a reflection of Trump.

We won’t get the years back, but we are going to get our country back. As Oprah says, “Soon and very soon.”

This is a magnificent moment to be alive and be an American. We stand at the edge of a season of renewal, redemption and prosperity — if we choose it.

Will we?

I believe that we will.

I believe so because I have faith in America, and after three days of the DNC my faith is strengthened.

I am certain about which side will prevail because I have faith in America.

Kamala Harris for president is more than a personal ambition. It is an urgent American cause.

It is a cause that everyone should join. Worthy causes are always worth the effort.
