Now Trump doesn’t want to talk about it and says abortion is a small issue. I call bullshit.
Women aren’t incubators with legs who should be forced to give birth. Forced birth is a form of slavery. When women are denied bodily autonomy, we are denied democracy. We become second class citizens, infantilized and minimized, when we cannot make our own reproductive health care decisions. Donald Trump and Republicans don’t care about any of this and they certainly don’t care about women (because if they did care, they would fix the mess they’ve created). Trump even picked a running mate, JD Vance, who wants to repeal no fault divorce and says women should stay in abusive marriages for the benefit of the children. (Vance doesn’t explain how children “benefit” from knowing their father beats the crap out of their mother; that explanation should be a whopper.)
Abortion bans affect millions of men, women, and children. Abortion isn’t a “small issue” to the pregnant women or their families. It isn’t a “small issue” to the doctors who are threatened with punishment if they dare provide standard medical care — even for women who have miscarried and need medical intervention. It isn’t a “small issue” if the woman is your spouse (and the mother of your children) or someone you love and with proper medical care they can live (but some law intervenes to deny medical care and so puts the woman at risk of dying).
When we hear the horror stories women tell of being denied medical care (an abortion) to safely end their doomed pregnancy, just know that Donald Trump is the reason these women are suffering, risking permanent impairment and death. No wonder Donald Trump doesn’t want to talk about this — it makes him look bad, but it isn’t just bad. It’s cruel.
To be clear, for a woman with a doomed pregnancy, whether or not she has an abortion no baby will survive; having an abortion protects the woman and has no impact on the (already not viable) fetus. With an abortion the woman has a better chance of surviving with the least long term harm. But Donald Trump and the (mostly white male) Republicans who pass the abortion bans are fine with the mess they’ve created. The Republican lawmakers didn’t listen to medical experts who warned them where abortion bans would take us — they passed abortion bans anyway, proving they cannot be trusted to protect women.
It seems so obvious to me that women who want reproductive rights (access to contraception, abortion, and IVF) are not asking for anything special, we just want bodily autonomy — you know like men have. We want to decide when, and if, we have children. We want to live our lives without the government passing laws that allow us, when pregnant, to suffer and die when doctors know how to save us.
I urge you to vote for Harris/Walz and Democrats up and down the ballot who support reproductive rights and democracy for all of us. Even if you can’t get pregnant, someone you know or love can, so unfettered access to abortion is essential for all of us. Not convinced?
