Mississippi has the nation’s shortest life expectancy, highest maternal mortality rate, highest infant mortality rate, the worst healthcare system, highest rate of adult diabetes, and ranks dead last in education. The word bottom is insufficient.
And yet millions of Federal dollars are currently being spent to attack Minnesota. The priorities are so screwed up — and Mississippi has not helped itself by voting Republican for over 50 years. Ronald Reagan launched his Presidential campaign in Mississippi in 1980. What good did it do for anyone?
And, as you have posted many, many times…….the people of Mississippi keep voting GOP. The same politicos that keep punching them in the face and kicking them in the nards on a daily basis.
They take the abuse and say, “ Thanks. Can I have some more please? "
It is, unfortunately, common in the South. The people in the Appalachians of North Carolina have been electing MAGA Congresswoman Virginia Foxx for 22 years now. Every year they get poorer and every two years, they re-elect her. You cannot help people who refuse to help themselves.
Local church groups make a lot about having their kids do charitable trips there before Christmas to give the kids toys and things. I'd think it would be a lot more productive to set up small industries and farms.
Unfortunately delerious positivity and easy believism are the prevailing thought patterns, not "critical thinking" which I was taught to aspire to in college studying philosophy, the pre-socratics on.
I was taught critical thinking skills in High School but………..that was back in the stone age when I was in High School.
My teachers back in the day would constantly challenge us with statements such as, “ Why is that? “ an / or “ What makes you think that’s true / not true? “ And of course “ What facts do you have to support that point / opinion? ".
I can remember one of my English teachers verbally ripping you a new one if you didn’t have your facts and arguments laid out in a logical fashion. If you didn’t do that? Well, it wasn’t pretty. You learned pretty quickly to “ do your homework first “ or suffer her wrath.
It is nearly impossible to out organize legislated voter suppression. Anytime we get close, here in a different Southern state that should still be subject to the VRA, republicans start arresting GOTV volunteers and frequently drain them financially and emotionally until they die while dragging out these bogus trials.
Obviously, the answer is going to have to include a work around for the tolerance of intolerance paradox in America the Sequel. We are always going to land in this spot of bold racists oozing out from under their rocks once or twice a century to try and destroy democracy with their ignorance and hate.
I certainly get it and appreciate it. North Carolina has been so badly gerrymandered by Republicans — an evil lot if there ever was one — that they have ensured control for decades, if not centuries. If this country even survives, which is questionable.
I remember when you were here and shared your video commentaries and article's, Steve. I still get teary eyed,as I was reading this piece this morning, Thank You, Steve, you and are a true Patriot, and will reStack ASAP 🙏
Neuroscientist Jaak Panksepp, who was born in the tiny Baltic country of Estonia, told me the remarkable story of Estonia’s “Singing Revolution.” In June 1987, on one of those endless sub-Arctic summer evenings, more than ten thousand concertgoers at the Tallinn Song Festival Grounds linked hands and began to sing patriotic songs that had been forbidden during half a century of Soviet occupation. These songfests and protests continued, and on September 11, 1988, three hundred thousand people, about a quarter of the population of Estonia, gathered to sing and make a public demand for independence. By August 1991 the Congress of Estonia had proclaimed the restoration of the Estonian state, and when Soviet tanks attempted to intervene, people acted as human shields to protect Tallinn’s radio and TV stations. As a columnist noted in the New York Times: “Imagine the scene in Casablanca in which the French patrons sing “La Marseillaise” in defiance of the Germans, then multiply its power by a factor of thousands, and you’ve only begun to imagine the force of the Singing Revolution.” - B. van der Kolk MD, The Body Keeps the Score
A co-worker of mine just got married. He’s a young guy just starting his life. His wife is from El Salvador. He told me she just got her green card. He also said he told her that he will get in front of, block, distract and impede any police of ICE agents that try to detain his wife. He said he has a knife and would use it if push came to shove to defend his wife. He said if any of that happens for her to run away. Don’t worry about him just run away. I won’t let them get you.
How fucking sad is that?
How sad is it that a newly married couple is worried about the feds locking them up and disappearing them?
IMO the only worries they should have now is:
Making payments on those effing student loans
Working hard to get a down payment for a house
Finding an affordable home close to work / school
Finding a good school district for any future children
"The days ahead in America will be brutal, and the crisis will worsen." Yea, verily. Raoul Malo of the Mavericks sings: "The years will not be kind." For the seventy million who elected this evil, for sure.
I did it, I subscribed! After today's post how could I not. Steve is the most powerful writer I have read in this moment and I read alot. Keep it up. I know you will because there isn't a bad post in all of the ones I've read over the last year or so.
I’m an old guy and lived through all this history, occasionally in person. It was dark as hell. One forgets. As a nation we saw the promised land from the mountain top … and then turned back. I didn’t know about Evers grave at Arlington and the “Christian” who seeks to erase him. It is all Mississippi 1963 now. Which has a double meaning you have so beautifully captured.
This article made me cry- so illuminating and inspiring!Do you think it possible that we can ever come out of this nightmare that we are now experiencing ? And do you think that the murderer of Renee Good will ever be held accountable?
Another powerful and poignant History lesson on this day of remembrance for Martin Luther King, Jr. Thank you Steve. Once again I felt like I was there in real time.
Reading about all these Heroes that have gone before us and are among us now gives me strength and comfort during this terrible time. I stand with all of you. May God be with us all as we continue to fight the good fight. ♥️🇺🇸💙🙏
I just went to Arlington’s website and his info is still there. And location of his grave. I grew up in Jackson, Miss. Being a little white girl, I was so oblivious to everything going on there. I hate that I wasn’t more aware, but I guess my parents kept me shielded from it all. I don’t live in Miss. anymore. As an adult, I’ve never liked telling people I grew up there. Many assumptions made about me based on that alone.
This article does my heart good, in a sad way, but patriotic way. Many have gone before us and fought for our freedom and now it is our turn. Maybe everyone has these thoughts, but maybe it is me, I always thought that there would come a day in my lifetime where there would be this very moment. I would always think and ponder would I still be able to fight. I was very strong and energetic in my youth. Now, I know that it is not all about physical strength but more about keeping the faith, encouraging others to stand strong and doing whatever it is I can do from where I am in life. I can give some financially, I can stay informed and I can vote when the time comes and I will. Steve, it is with great admiration once again that I thank you. My father was a writer; he would have loved your commentaries. He would have wanted to sit down and talk to you for hours. I miss his wisdom and insight; glad you are here to fill in the gap. The deeper we get into this era of unrest and division, the more strength I am gaining from your writings and the perseverance of the people on the front battle lines like those in Minnesota. We need truth to be given to us. That is why the regime is trying to take away our freedom of speech and is infiltrating the media. They know strength of the people comes from hearing truth! The want to keep us uninformed and in the dark. Thank you for being a light in the darkness!
Thank you for your continuing effort to inform all of us as to what is required to be a true and good citizen of the US. Rest assured that we are paying attention and will answerthe call.

Using the word why should be taught and would do more for the kids than toys.

In Philadelphia, Mississippi at that, where he pointedly supported “states rights”.

Me too. It is heartbreaking.
Me also.

Right you are! Steve is a true hero and patriot in addition to being a brilliant writer.

Brought to tears by this emotional truthful essay on MLK Memorial Day. Thank you Steve for your history expressed with love.
A synagogue was burned down In Jackson last week. The Haters never seem to disappear.
In Brooklyn NY is Medgar Evers College which is part of the City University of NY. He , MLK and all freedom fighters are to be remembered.
The fight against fascism and racism continues. We must rid America of this MAGA scourge.
