YES Steve what an awesome day, Mitch and Kevin rebuked and humiliated publicly, Trump Org Guilty on all 17 charges, and Warnock wins! We are celebrating today!

When I saw Kevin McCarthy make his brief appearance at the Congressional Gold Medal award, I wondered how he had the gonads to make a speech to that Rotunda full of officers and the family members of those who were lost forever. Who made that deal? And then, son of a gun, McConnell stepped up and he shed a few words, as well. Obviously they horned their way in. I am proud of Officer Sicknick's parents. Their actions made the bold and lasting statement.

It was a good day for decency on display.

Reading my daily installment of Steve Schmidt is like starting my day with a decadent breakfast of pastries and rich coffee. Indulgence for the mind.

Kevin McCarthy is a coward who will - at least initially- become Speaker of the House. We’ll see how long that lasts.

In the end, the rule of these Republicans in the US House will be a political blessing to Democrats. The question is whether again in 2024 the people who live in these blind, gerrymandered districts will continue to elect the Republicans they have been programmed to support.

In the meantime, as when viewing a horror movie, either turn away if you have a weak stomach or enjoy the comedy knowing that they have already set the course toward their own destruction.

I just listened to a few podcasts from Jonathan Capehart, Washington Post opinion writer. The first was with Governor - elect Wes Moore of Maryland. His plans for his first 100 days in office gave me hope even though I live in another state. Wes Moore is what I hope our future as a Democracy should look like. Then I listened to Capehart’s podcast with former DC Metropolitan Police Officer Michael Fanone who almost lost his life during the January 6 insurrection. He minced no words in his description of McCarthy. I loved seeing them shunned yesterday but deep down they have no remorse.

McCarthy and McConnell are both truly deplorable, cowardly failures. They have such meanness, such lack of human compassion and empathy. There is so much divisiveness, racism, anti-Semitism, anti-Asian - and they never speak up condemning this or fighting back.

With the re-election of Senator Raphael Warnock more can be done in the Senate, especially with judicial appointments. But the House is going to be a quagmire, where proposals from the Senate for meaningful reform and progress will go to die.

The Sicknick family did the country a great service yesterday in memory Brian Sicknick. Also worth noting that members of the Metropolitan Police Department heckled Michael Fannone with foul language at yesterday's ceremony. I agree with Frank Figliuzzi that these hecklers should be investigated by the Chief of the MPD, and if he won't do it, then someone above him should. We can not let insurrectionist-sympathizers (and possibly enablers) be part of DC law enforcement, or any law enforcement for that matter.

Dec 6, 2022 will be in the history books as the day the American Experiment worked. Guilty on all counts & Raphael Warnock wins his Senate seat over a handpicked puppet. In the end - “We the People” had the last word.. in the jury room & in the election booth. God Bless America🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

I wouldn't shake their hands either. Cowards? Yes. But in my book they are worse than that. They put their party over country. They put their reelection and power over the people. Not only that, but they, even today support Trump. And for a full measure of anger, should McCarthy actually become Speaker, he will only be Speaker in name only, the real Speaker will undoubtedly be Trump.

That moment of shaming was such a long time coming and so well-deserved it literally brought tears to my eyes. It also brought to mind Liz Cheney's words:

"There will come a day when Donald Trump is gone, but your dishonor will remain."

(It also brought to mind the immortal words of wisdom I learned the first time I was in Philadelphia many years ago:

"F%$k around, find out."

Words to live by, really.)

The GOP members of the House + Senate are all merchants of garbage, lies + MAGA propaganda with maybe the exception of Romney + Murkowski. In case they haven't noticed, the US electorate has moved on from the trump clown show - even if trump keeps playing his broken record for the 1,000,000th time. By the time the 2024 Presidential election comes around, the wrong side of the House is going to be in such disarray that it will flip back to the Dem's and the Senate working off of the progress made by the Biden administration will hold the majority.

By then, let us hope that Russia is out of Ukraine, and Putin is out of power and the world can continue to address Climate Change and the real issues facing the US and the World

Another excellent article. Sure would like to know the names of the 21 members of congress that voted NOT to award the congressional Medal of Honor to these heroes? Let the ripple of shame continue and remain in the public specter.

The rebuke was pure poetry and gave me much pleasure. I hope and pray that it made its way to Mar a Lago and Moscow to show what true patriotism looks like. Trump suffers defeat after defeat. His world is closing in on him, soon he will be alone. Kevin McCarthy backed the wrong horse and he knows it. He may become Speaker of the House but at what price. He has sold his soul so often there is no redeeming it now. It belongs to Trump and his gun toting sycophant, MTG. A match made in hell. I hope they will be unhappy together. We the people have had enough of their selling out for profit and political power. Their days are also numbered like their bloated master in Florida.

What's horrifying is how of his fellow police officers (!) have turned against those officers who have given testimony, insulting those that called out the republican's for the attempted coup.

Yes, the times are a changing. The family of Capitol Police Officer Brian Sicknick acted for us all who have repudiated the comportment of senators and representatives who voluntarily chose to look towards the interests of Donald Trump. Nobody forced them to act with such blatant affront to what happened on January 6, 2021. They may have voted to legitimize the 2020 election early the day after the Insurrection, they may have voiced the right moral text that followed the threat to their very lives just hours earlier, but then they chose to move in the opposite direction by turning a seditious conspiracy and insurrection into a normal day of protestation in the Capitol of the United States. They just flushed all the evident criminality of the day into the drains of oblivion. Mitch McConnell and Kevin McCarthy, like all the Republicans who opted to save the party by speaking alternate facts and acting like delusional men and women when confronted with the truth, expected that the day would be forgotten, that there would be no demands for a congressional investigation and did the ultimate to oppose it, a dismissal of the urgency the moment demanded and a betrayal to the Constitution and their oaths taken to protect and defend the nation. It was not senility that made them forget, but their senile line of thought and actions should follow them for the rest of their lives.

Steve, Kevin McCarthy will never be Speaker of the House, because he should never be. Former D.C. Police Officer Michael Fanone spoke of the hollow sound of Kevin McCarthy's words spoken yesterday. The Sicknick Family showed the hollowness of hypocritical gestures of a top senator and a power seeking representative.

I must add one fact coming from Europe. There was a massive law enforcement raid in Germany earlier today. Approximately 3,000 police officers searched 130 far-right extremist sites of the Reich Citizens movement located in the majority of states there. Their aim is to overturn the government and the postwar German constitution. Not only are there soldiers in the organization, but they are very much linked to conspiracy theories and Q-Anon. There were two individuals arrested in Austria and in Italy. This news is to be taken extremely seriously within the context of what occurred on January 6, 2021, and the ongoing far right extremism in our nation with the same final goal and driven by the one most vicious of conspiratorial movements. We must demand better congressional leaders.
